Every Oscarcast is acrapshoot. Some winners, others losers. Whatever.Being of a certain age, weremember those charismatichosts – Billy Crystal, JohnnyCarson, Bob Hope and theirglamorous gravitas. As theworld knows, life is change, and today’s youthquake iswhere it’s at.
Congratulations to2013 host Seth MacFarlane,easily likeable with a sense ofhumor bordering betweennaughty andraunchy (FamilyGuy, Ted). Seth,39, and his Oscarstalwarts uppedthe ratings by 2percent from lastyear with 40.3million viewers.In 2010, KathrynBigelow’s TheHurt Locker, withthe wonderful butt h e n - u n k n o w nJeremy Renner,
win attracted41.3 million,and Clint
Eastwood’s 2005 MillionDollar Baby starring HilarySwank drew 42.1 million.Peter Jackson’s The Lord OfThe Rings: Return OfThe King remains achamp, with 43.5million.

number of All That Jazz (theBroadway blockbuster wasexecutive-produced by CraigZadan and Neil Meron, whoalso produced the Oscar tele-cast). Craig and Neil are nowproducing a cable remake ofBonnie And Clyde and livetelecast of The Sound Of Musicfor NBC.

their Golden Globes hostingsuccess are being tapped for2014? Seth swears he willnever host the Oscars again.
Did you know thata 30-second spoton the telecastcost between $1.7million and $1.8million?
“In mymind, our Oscarsare the biggestparty, bigger thanthe Presidentiali n a u g u r a t i o n ,”vowed WolfgangPuck to the 1,500-plus guests at theGovernors Ball inthe Hollywood &H i g h l a n dBallroom on thefifth floor abovethe Dolby Theatre,home to theOscarcast.
W o l f g a n gmasterminds thesumptuous dinner,feeding the fam-
ished after the three-and-a-halfhour program. Myriad tastesfrom hisinfamous
smoked salmon pizza to themini chicken pot pies dressedwith truffles. Wolfgang’s foodis forever memorable, with amenu of the freshest ingredi-ents that the crowd long talksabout. “If they remember thefood,” he beams, “I’ve donemy job.”
For those of us who’veknown Wolfgang before heopened his first Spago on HornAvenue in West Hollywood in1982, there’s no question thatthe guy’s a culinary and busi-ness genius, running a multi-million dollar empire. Agenius with a heart who tooktime out to cook a favoredweinerschnitzel meal for theOscar-winning Amour produc-er-director Michael Haneke, anative of Austria, as isWolfgang.
Please remember thatthese round-the-clock parties, not only on Oscar night, butduring days preceding the big
night, createthousands ofweek-long jobsfor the city.Frankly, maymore partieskeep rollingbig timethroughout theyear. What’sbetter thanthese wel-comed pay-checks for ourlocals in themidst of ourdowntroddeneconomy?
