DETAILS OF PROJECT EXECUTED IN COLLEGE

Project Name: Design and Analysis of the Propellant tank used in a Satellite Launch Vehicle at ISRO

Project Description:

This project deals with the design and analysis of a propellant tank of a satellite launch vehicle. Designers have

always strived towards achieving the best possible design that is reliable, failsafe, economical and easy to

realize. An effort has been made here to design the propellant tank and perform a finite element analysis on the

tank to ensure that the stresses are within the design limits. During its service a propellant tank is subjected to

internal as well as external loads in the design and analysis internal pressure was taken as the operating load

and design and analysis is carried out for internal pressure. The specification and acceptance details of the tank

are highlighted. Then modeling of various components of the tank structure was done using AutoCAD and

then assembled. The assembled model was then imported to ANSYS FE software in a compatible format. The

imported model was then converted into an axi-symmetric model and then subdivided into areas. These areas

are meshed using elements and benchmarked for large displacement analysis of thin shells. The analysis results

include deformation pattern and stress plots (hoop, meridonial and Von-Mises). These plots give an important

insight into the displacement, stress and strain distribution of the different components of the propellant tank.

Stress plots are helpful in comparing the strength of material to access margins on the tank which are calculated

using classical design formulae. Launch vehicles are designed with very low margins. The designs margin lied

well within the limit and was cleared for realization of the project.
