Humorist®”

Dr. Brad Nieder’s signature keynote—“Laughter is the Best

Medicine”—is funny! The healthcare humor will tickle your

funny bone and have you laughing. “The Healthy Humorist®”

has been known to skewer such topics as healthcare lingo,

diet plans, pharmaceutical ads, medical marijuana and

scrubs. He’s even been known to break into song! Not just your standard comedy show, though, the

program is uplifting, too. You may find yourself committing

to lightening up and laughing more. Or to adopting a new

healthy habit. It’s also educational … but not in a boring way. You’ll laugh

as you learn why laughter really is good medicine … for

combating stress, feeling better and living longer. And Dr.

Brad always dispenses some wellness advice, too, in an en-

tertaining manner unlike any other doctor you’ve encountered. So that’s it in a nutshell: a funny doctor who delivers

healthcare comedy, an inspiring message and valuable

information. You’ll be feeling better in no time!

You Are Invited!Friends!

If GAPA’s 2017 conference was listed on the New York Stock Exchange, our stock would have skyrocketed. Why? Because the satisfaction of our conference attendees has reached an all-time-high! The positive changes to our conferences, implemented last year, resulted in the following stats:

98% = conference met my goals/expectations

95% = presentations will help me in my practice

96% = variety of presentations were satisfactory

For our 2018 nationally attended event, you’re in for another HUGE treat. Here’s why:

Education. Our attendees LOVE our new format of “dive-deep tracks” — we’ll be continuing this winning approach. Our presenters are the crème de la crème — truly the best in their respective fields. We asked them for their full-throttle creativity, and trust me, they’ve risen to the challenge. We promise you’ll be engaged and entertained at the same time. And, of course our hands-on workshops sell out each year, so be sure to secure your spot early.

Destination. One of the country’s most premier summer beach destinations, the world-class Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort can’t be beat. I don’t know if it’s the seven miles of sugar-white sand beach, four championship golf courses, 15 world-class tennis courts, 19 swimming pools, a 113-slip marina, water sports, or fishing. Or, it could be the children’s programs, spas, shopping, and casual and fine dining restaurants. Whatever the reason, your peers and colleagues from all 50 states are flocking to this amazing Gulf of Mexico destination. As for me, I love it all!.

Relaxation. Rejuvenation. Recreation. Most of us work too many hours, are too stressed out, don’t have enough time for family, and don’t have enough chill time. Sound familiar? I challenge you to sign up right now (you’ll get the best price). Book your hotel and get the best room. Let’s laugh together during our keynote speaker. Let’s enjoy the finest CME available anywhere. Let’s chill on the beach with our family and friends.

What’s more, whether you’re a first time conference attendee or you’re “coming home” like hundreds who join us year after year, you’ll be treated like family. Hear that? The beach is calling...

PROGRAM INFORMATION: “LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE”

Hands-On WorkshopsSunday, July 15Board Review John Bielinski, Jr., MS, PA-C 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. This program, by John Bielinski, Jr, PA-C, is an 8-hour, “smart study” approach to help give you the confidence and knowledge you need to pass your certification exam. You’ll learn how to use a technique called “selective negligence” to focus on high yield topics when studying for the PANCE/PANRE. We utilize the technique by diving into the top 4 topics of the boards which make up 48% of the exam content (as provided by the NCCPA). The breakdown is as follows: Cardiology – 16%, Pulmonary – 12%, Gastrointestinal – 10%, Musculoskeletal – 10%. You’ll learn how to conquer these board review topics by implementing our “active engagement learning” system!

Slit Lamp Jim Gordon, PA 8:00 – 10:30 a.m. At the conclusion of this workshop, the participants will be able to understand the basic eye examination, and review some common pathology and common findings in the emergency setting. Each attendee will be given individual slit lamp examination training.

MSK Ultrasound Karen McGuigan, RMSK, ARNP 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. GAPA has partnered with SonoSite, and would like to invite you to join us for a workshop dedicated to understanding and improving diagnostic ultrasound skills. This course is designed for the novice wishing to focus on diagnostic, rather than guided injection ultrasound techniques.

Diagnostic ultrasound is noninvasive and offers real-time imaging, allowing for examinations of structures at rest and in motion. This ability to capture the movement of musculoskeletal components differentiates it from other imaging modalities and can permit more accurate diagnoses. Other advantages for your patient include its portability, which allows for point-of-care application and interpretation.

Through hands-on practice sessions and question-and-answer opportunities with onsite experts, you’ll learn how the integration of point-of-care ultrasound into your practice can benefit you and your patients.

Crash Course in Clinical Skills Jim Gordon, PA 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Learn new clinical skills with an explanation/demonstration workshop. Literally from head to toe, this workshop will cover a multitude of skills necessary for treating conditions encountered in the acute care setting. Skills such as fish hook removal, ring removal, body piercing/jewelry removal, abscess/felon/paronychia drainage, central line placement, chest tube placement, lumbar puncture, and various nerve blocks will be covered in lecture. Equipment will be available to have hands-on practice of other skills (should time allow) but emphasis will be given to the skills most often requested in the past. Individual instruction will be provided and everyone will have the opportunity to practice on life-like models. Pearls and techniques of various clinical skills will be discussed.

ACLS Tony Fullard, PhD 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. This course is a review for those with a current ACLS course card. This workshop will cover the skills and didactic information necessary to treat a cardiac arrest patient.

Participants will review various clinical applications.

Joint Injections Mary Vacala, PA-C, ATC, MSPAS, DFAAPA 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Many practitioners have never been taught basic joint injection and aspiration techniques. Although basic musculoskeletal anatomy has been taught, hands-on application of the anatomy in aspirating and injecting joints has been limited with few opportunities to demonstrate hands-on skills. At the conclusion, participants will feel confident with their skills in aspiration and joint injections.

Chest X-rays Christy Wilson, PA-C, MPAS, DFAAPA 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Everything you always wanted to know about a CXR, but were afraid to ask! This hands-on workshop will provide you with the tools necessary for interpreting CXRs in a primary care setting. Review radiographic images along with a brief case study, and expand knowledge of reviewing CXRs and making the appropriate diagnosis.

Suturing & Wound Techniques Jim Gordon, PA 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. At the conclusion of this workshop, the participants will be able to: Evaluate wounds/lacerations/conditions presented in the patient, prescribe appropriate treatment, procedure and/or medications; provide patient education appropriate for the individual patient and condition, and arrange follow-up as needed. These techniques will be practiced in class. Dermabond will be discussed and demonstrated.
