Hello Pilots,

Happy New Year!! Here are some more leadership tips to help you and members of your leadership team (club officers) to continue to have a successful year.

Leaders need to be prepared. Often times this is just a simple matter of thinking ahead. Making decisions is a big part of leadership and the more intelligent your decisions, the better of a leader you can become. A decision made on whim is much less likely to be the best choice as compared with a carefully planned out decision made in advance.

Leaders have to know where they are going and constantly communicate this direction. This is usually referred to as vision casting. Some leaders run into problems because they aren’t very good at articulating their vision. Most leaders have problems because they haven’t really figured out what their vision is. They may have a few ideas of where they want to go, but they haven’t really sat down and worked out exactly where they want to end up and their rules for getting there.

It is the leader’s job to set the goal and the rules for achieving that goal. This doesn’t mean the leader doesn’t take input from others

“MAKE IT STRONG” NANCY MILLER LEADERSHIP COORDINATOR

January is a time for reflection. As you look at your Pilot year so far, please look at your goals for membership. Have you reached them? If you have, CONGRATULATIONS!!! If you haven’t, there is still time. It really isn’t hard to get new members, but it is impossible if you don’t try. Please plan a Share Pilot program or some other event, if you haven’t already had one this year, and invite “lots” of prospective members. It has been said many times that someone may have to be asked to join as many as seven times before they decide to make the commitment. Don’t give up!!!

As you reflect on membership, please consider what you have done with the new members you have gotten? Have they been assigned to a division? Are they working in your club? Have you given them a mentor or Pilot buddy? Be sure that you do everything you can to involve your new members immediately in the projects of your club. Make them feel IMPORTANT because they certainly are!

Again, as you are reflecting on your membership, look

“YOUR CUP RUNNETH OVER WITH MEMBERSHIP” CINDY TATUM MEMBERSHIP CO-COORDINATOR

and it doesn’t mean that you can’t correct your course midway as new information becomes available, but you can’t leave leadership to chance. Individuals will create their own vision when one doesn’t exist. It is unlikely that your team will all create the exact same vision. The better you define and communicate your vision the more you can minimize the unnecessary friction and keep people focused on the goal.

A good leader leaves a legacy of leadership skills in others. Well led organizations become even better led because of this. It all starts at the top with the organizational leader.

Leading on purpose is not easy. It takes effort and focus. You have to be willing to practice what you preach–and that does not come naturally to many people. However, by being aware of how you lead and the impact that your decisions have on others, you can increase your leadership skill and earn respect and leadership influence with others. The more you do this, the easier it is to function as a true leader and not just someone with a title.

Nancy

seriously at how well your members get along. Is there a special bond among your members? I hope that there is such a bond. Remember, friendship and service are our principles, and we need to care about and for our members. A club that works together, plays together, and laughs and cries together will be a strong club.

Remember, each of you is what Pilot is all about. I leave you with a thought for the New Year. If every Pilot were just like you, how strong would your Pilot club be? I hope each of you and every Pilot club has a wonderful New Year.

“CUP”…COULD U PLEASE GLYNICE HAYES PROJECTS COORDINATOR

Hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays as much as I did, and may we all have a prosperous New Year.

The following clubs wanted to share some of their favorite projects.

Pilot Club of Newnan: Beverly Garner said “this was a project we really enjoyed and will be doing again in the spring”. The Pilot Club of Newnan held an afternoon tea at a local nursing facility. Residents were provided with old fashioned hats and Pilots also wore hats and dressed in their “Sunday clothes”. The residents really liked wearing the hats. Some men attended but they preferred not to wear a hat.

Beautiful teapots were used to steep the tea and sugar cubes for the sweetener. The club provided tea cups with saucers and a variety of teas along with tea sandwiches and sweets that were all homemade, prepared by the members. We used crystal serving pieces. An alternate beverage of punch was offered for those who did not prefer the tea. However, most of the residents tried it even if they changed to another drink.

We did not do a program other than introduce ourselves to all residents and talk with them individually for a short time. The gleaming look in their eyes told us the happiness they felt and they expressed their appreciation over and over. Pilots enjoyed this event as much as the residents.

This project was very inexpensive as Pilots used their teapots, cups and saucers. We wore old hats from our mother’s or a relative’s closet. The refreshments were donated by those Pilots who prepared them. The tea was hardly an expense. The time for this project was about an hour at the facility and food preparation time varied.

Also, as an ongoing project we take balloons to a local nursing facility to each resident to celebrate their birthday. We take it on their birthday and visit with them for a while and take a birthday card. We have been doing this for several years. It is very inexpensive and only takes a little time but it brings such joy to a lot of people. Some residents who have been there for a while expect the visit and ask the staff to remind us.

Pilot Club of Madison County: Audrey Spivey from the Pilot Club of

Madison County shared information about their Brain Power Walk/5K Run. They had lots of fun and exercise.

The Pilot Club of Madison County, Georgia held their first Brain Power Walk/5K Run for Alzheimer’s on Saturday, October 6, 2012 in Danielsville, Georgia. The Brain Power Walk was started some years ago by Pilot International to bring awareness to brain safety, but the Pilot Club of Madison County wanted to bring more awareness to their community on brain diseases and disorders and thus was born the 5K Run for Alzheimer’s. There were 30 participants to either walk/run with first, second, and third place medals for the female runners; first, second, and third place medals for the male runners and first, second, and third place winners for the walkers.

First concern was to the safety of the walker/runners, so the 5K route was planned and sent to Madison County Sheriff’s Office for approval and safety. On the day of the event, three officers from the sheriff’s department helped insure safety, thirteen members of the Pilot Club helped with registration, posted positions throughout the route for guidance and two water stations.

In the ladies run division, Candice Homer ran the 5K in 22 minutes, 43 seconds, second place winner was Lindsey Nash and third place winner, Kelly Stinson. In the men’s division, Sheldon Spivey ran the 5K in 30 minutes, 2 seconds, second place winner was Brian Maxwell and third place winner was Cameron Fitzpatrick. Winners in the walker division were Jane Tippins, Inya Russell and Ariel Jones.

The Pilot Club of Madison County raised over $1000 for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Great Job Pilots! Thank you for sharing your successful projects!

Have a cup of tea day,

Happy New Year to Everyone!!

It is not too soon to evaluate your fundraising event(s). This process can help your Pilot Club determine the success of the fundraising event(s) and also record information for next year’s Pilot leaders. Make sure that your evaluation goes beyond the money raised or lost. Evaluation should include an overall analysis of the event (s) and recommendations for future fund raising events. I hope very one is on the way for a great Christmas. We still have Anchor Clubs that have not paid their Georgia District Dues, and Pilot International Dues. I sent out e-mails to each region Anchor Coordinator and each Anchor club advisor that I have on file. If you didn’t get the e-mail from me that would mean I don’t have your correct address. Please contact me with your correct address. It is very important to have these dues paid.

The Anchor officers are starting to working on the plans for the Anchor Convention. Watch for the Anchor newsletter for all the details. Remember the cut of date for hotel registration is Jan. 30, 2013, if you want the convention rate. You can start now making your registration.

If you have Anchors that would like to go to Freedom Foundation now is the time to start making plans. The date is February 21-24, 2013. I will be going and I will be buying my plane ticket by the end of the month. If you have an Anchor who would like to go but would have to travel alone please contact me and I can try to give you the flight information and they can travel on the same flight as I will be on. I hope we have a large group attend.

Was there too little or too much food? Was the location good or bad? Did the time fit? Should the event be held earlier or later or on a different day for different attendee results? Would you continue this fund raising event? Answering these questions will provide a helpful tool in future planning and decision making.

Happy New Year! I hope the year 2013 brings you much happiness, good health, and success!

January is a great time to focus on leadership. Have you ever considered serving as an officer on any level? If not, why not? Clubs are beginning to look for new leaders among their membership, as are districts and the international organization, as well. Having capable and committed leaders is essential to success. The Georgia District Leadership Team has demonstrated how great leaders work together for the good of the district. They are great communicators and plan excellent programs and presentations at district events. They visit and supports clubs, and follow through with their responsibilities.

John C. Maxwell speaks about being the kind of leader that others want to follow in his book, The Right to Lead. Below are his guidelines to help you grow as a leader as you take on a leadership role, followed by connections to Pilot. 1) Lead to serve others. It’s not about you, the leader; it’s about serving others through Pilot. 2) Become a good follower first in order to become an effective leader. Reflect upon your personal experiences of following other great leaders in Pilot. 3) Develop positive relations with others. Network and get to know others in your club and community, as well as at the district and international levels. 4) Strive for excellence and carry out your responsibilities at the highest level of

which you are capable. Accept and fulfill your responsibilities to

Happy New Year to all my fellow Pilots!

This past six months have gone so quickly and 2013 will do the same.

One way we can make the New Year manageable is to plan ahead. Time management is my only salvation. I want to remind you of one date that I feel is perhaps one of the most important dates in our Pilot year. This is the date that your Region Workshops are scheduled. Region Workshops are an important key to a healthy Club. Officers and coordinators need to review current information that is offered at these workshops. Information about new club and district reports will be made available as well as forms that are updated. Whether you are new to a job or have done it for years, things change every year and it is important to be abreast of the updates.

We offer six opportunities for you to attend a workshop each year. You do not have to attend the workshop in your region. The dates this year are April 27, 2013 for Northwest, East Central and Southwest Regions and May 4, 2013 for Northeast, West Central and Southeast Regions. More information will be sent soon about which club will host in each region.

PATRICIA WHATLEY - GA DISTRICT GOVERNOR-ELECT I hope you will plan now to send All officers in your club and make it a make- up meeting or a fun fellowship trip by car pooling and lunching together. The time you invest in this training will make your 2013-2014 Pilot year less stressful and you will be knowledgeable of the what, when and wherefores. Please mark your calendar and plan now for another exciting year of “Friendship and Service”.

Patricia

Pilot, as others have placed their trust in you. 5) Rely on discipline instead of emotion and earn your place as a leader by gearing up for the challenges and facing the crucial moments with knowledge and strength. Hold fast to your commitments and work through challenges, always for the good of the organization. 6) Add value by helping others to live better lives and reach their potential. As Pilots, we do this through our service projects and personal commitment. 7) Empower others. “You are meant to be a river, not a reservoir.” Great Pilot leaders display courage and character, and we can learn much from the leaders who have served before us. Heartfelt thanks to current and past Georgia leaders for inspiring others to lead.

Good leadership takes time to develop, but there are many rewards to serving in leadership roles. We encourage and commend those of you who are willing to commit to service through Pilot International at the club, district, or international level to carefully consider such opportunities. The future holds exciting things for our organization and serving on the Pilot team can be an amazing experience!

Best wishes in the New Year!

It was great and everybody listened! Thank you so much for getting the grants in early! We are so excited and are looking forward to District Convention to see our recipients come forward and be recognized!!! The projects as always were so inspirational … and so very Pilot!

Be sure and send in your Pacesetter contributions ($10 per member per club) and not to be confused with the ‘extra’ dues we are all sending in. I don’t know why ten dollars is such an easy number … maybe it’s because it amounts to two Starbucks?

Exciting times! Plans of work are pouring in, with projects and fundraisers on the horizon. At PI (formerly PIF), we are eagerly awaiting your applications for grants and scholarships, and your oh, so very welcome 250 Club and Pacesetter contributions ($10 per member per club). As we continue to extend our caring and sharing as Pilots this holiday season, just a reminder that each year we ask that each club contribute $250 to the Grants and Scholarship Fund, which is the single source of fundraising for the PI grant programs. Help us continue to make a difference in the lives of our young Anchors as they start toward their future. Please remember to send this in before February 1

st so we may give you

PI REPRENTATIVE – PAT GARNER

and your club recognition at District.

The deadline that will ensure recognition at District Convention is February 1

st. (Donations are accepted

through June.) Just remember, you will never know the delight of such an honor until you hear your club cheering when your Certificate is presented to your club president!

Ok, quick calendar update:

Scholarship applications must be postmarked by March 1.

Mail Pacesetters, Goal for Grants and Scholarships, and/or general contributions to Pilot International. Make sure the intended fund is marked clearly. If combining contributions in one check, please break down how much each fund should receive.

Begin planning for Brain Awareness Week, March 11-17, 2013; and last but not least: look for the PI Annual Report in the winter edition of Pilot Log.

Also, most important, previously on the website you would use the tab marked “Foundation” and now you need only click on “Founders Fund.” There you will find revised and updated forms.

Please be certain to look their before using a document, just so you have the latest and greatest.

There is also now on the website, “Important Dates 2012-2013” which provides important events to help you plan your Pilot year. In addition,

Georgia District News –

April 2011 Governor’s Bulletin

From PI President Susan: We are tracking the

massive humanitarian disaster caused by the recent 8.9

earthquake off the Japanese coast (the largest in the

country’s history), and its subsequent tsunami. Life in

Japan has come to a halt with most transportation and

communication modes shut down. PI Headquarters has

been in touch with its Japanese translator, Kikuko

Kubo, who reports news as she receives it of our Pilot

Clubs there. Some clubs cannot be reached at this

time, but she believes the Pilot Clubs of Fukushima,

Morioka, Sendai, and Ichinoseki have been directly

affected. Osaka and the southwest are presumed

okay. Okinawa has been impacted by the tsunami,

although the extent of the damage and an accurate

death toll is still unknown.

Please notify the Pilot Clubs in your district to be alert to

news as it occurs and remind all Pilots that we are

accepting donations for the PIF Disaster Relief Fund.

These funds will be directed to the affected areas

where our clubs exist.

Pilots and Pilot Clubs may mail donations to PI

Headquarters at 102-A Preston Court, Macon, GA 31210, or fax credit card information to (478) 477-6978.

Please earmark all donations: Japan Disaster Fund. Your support and prayers are needed at this time.

Have you ever wondered why it is called “Parliamentary procedure?” The obvious guess would be that it is named after England’s Parliament, but what does that really have to do with how we hold meetings here in the Good Old USA? Actually, the term “parliamentarian” dates back to the 1640s, and originally was a designation of one of the sides in the English Civil War; and the meaning "one versed in parliamentary procedure" dates from 1834.

To give a different purpose behind using Mr. Roberts’ rules and what we today call parliamentary procedure, I am reminded of some of the lessons I have learned after becoming an Administrative Law Judge for the Social Security Administration – in a word, it is uniformity. The idea is that you can move from one office in one part of the country to another, and find the same rules, office and hearing procedures no matter where you are. It is the same with Pilot clubs and Districts – whether you are in Georgia or Japan, the Agenda and orders of business are basically the same.

It also gives the members advance knowledge of how

We realize that everyone is busy and caught up in the Christmas season (shopping, parties, families getting together, etc.) but we must remind everyone that the deadline is getting close for making district nominations. There are many Pilots in our District who would qualify and be good district officers. Club members, think of someone in your club whom you feel would be interested and encourage that person to consider running for a particular office. Information for making nominations can be found on the PI website.

An acceptance for nomination for District Office is not complete until the Chair of the Nominating Committee, Governor and PI Headquarters have received the Nomination Letter from the club, completed Qualification Form, Vision Statement, and Letter of Acceptance from the candidate to the club, postmarked by the due date, February 4, 2013. This is 60 days prior to the first day of District Convention.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE CHAIR – ESTHER FOSTER

The following Pilots will be serving on the District Nominating Committee: (Revised – 12/15/2012)

Greetings Pilots from the Southeast Region;

As we begin another year of uncertainties in our Country. We as individuals can begin by doing an inward search and see if there isn’t an area of improvement in our lives. We are not a perfect people for sure; yet; it’s always best if we strive to improve ourselves. This will give us a boost and a new energy. As for myself this continues to be a lifetime workshop. As we step into another Year with our Faith and with the help of our friends and families we can begin again.

As Pilots we then can get focused on our Clubs. What could make our clubs Better and More desirable for onlookers to join us in making a Difference in the Lives of Others? What an Opportunity we have as Pilots which is more than ONE…to get our engines going and full force ahead. I am always delighted when I know that I have played apart of helping others whether its solving a problem or helping meet a need. That’s truly the excitement of Pilot.

Let’s Begin Again for another Exciting Year of Friendships and Service!

Blessings and Friendship,

Virginia

Dear Pilot Friend: At this special time of year, it is our sincere wish for you to be part of the many programs and philanthropies Pilot International participates in each year. In order for PI to DO MORE, we need your support to maintain the level of excellence for which we are known. As Pilots, we show that we CARE MORE by supporting Founder’s Fund projects like the Safe Harbor Fund for disaster relief, Goals for Grants, and Scholarships. We want to continue these endeavors and continue to be a leader among service clubs! Your dedication and gifts to PI provide the foundation that keeps these programs strong. In order for PI to BE MORE, we need your financial gifts to further develop our programs and initiatives. It is only through the contributions of our members that we can sustain and improve our services, grants, scholarships and learning opportunities for our members and for their communities. Please consider a year end gift to the Pilot International Annual Fund. Your support is essential. If we each Do More, Care More, and Be More, together we will ensure the future of PI and watch it grow better and stronger each year! With deepest gratitude and friendship,

Winnie Brewer Pilot International President
