Mike Marra, head baseball coach for the Georgia Highlands College Chargers, believes in taking care of his players. He has recently taken all the pitchers on the inaugural team to Birmingham for biomechanical pitching evaluations at the renowned American Sports Medicine Institute. The primary purpose is to prevent injury, but as an added benet the analysis will also show weaknesses in a player’s pitching mechanics, allowing him to work on improving his throwing motion.
Once at ASMI, the athletes visit a lab where their range of motion is assessed. That process lets the analysts understand the limits of a player’s mechanics – metrics like how far his stride can reach or how far back his arm can swing before the forward motion begins and the ball is released. Then the pitcher is outtted with nearly two dozen reective markers, which are placed at key anatomical landmarks on his shoulders, torso, arms, legs, feet and head. As the pitcher throws the ball, his motion is recorded by eight high-speed, infrared cameras that pick up the reective markers and transmit them to a computer with a software program designed by ASMI. The program then calculates the body angles, joint velocities and timing mechanisms (kinematics) of the movement as well as the joint forces and torques (kinetics).
The results of the biomechanical pitching evaluation are based upon the motion analysis data as well as ASMI's knowledge of biomechanics, baseball, orthopedics, physical therapy, and strength & conditioning. Researchers also study the data to determine shoulder and elbow comfort during the pitch.
The group has collected a database of mechanics from elite athletes – pitchers who throw at a velocity of 85 miles per hour or higher over an extended period of time and have avoided injury. ASMI has studied these pitchers’ stride length, pelvis rotation, lead knee exion and shoulder extension rotation to evaluate how their movements keep them injury-free. They then compare the movements of the pitchers who come to be evaluated to see how their mechanics dier. Because
they know how likely certain mechanics are to cause injury, they can provide information on how to change the pitch for greater safety and eciency.

OUTFIELDERSThe outfield will be anchored by the “human eraser”, Freddie Beamon (Dahlonega, Ga./Lumpkin Co. HS) in center field. Beamon can take hits away from opposing hitters with this great athleticism. Dalton Geekie (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern HS) will start in right field and provides punch at the plate . Tony Flores (Dallas, TX/Harrison HS) will start the season as the Charger left fielder. Tripp Adams (Braselton, GA/Mill Creek HS), and Mitch Burger (Douglasville, GA/Alexander HS) platoon in left field and spell Beamon and Flores Tristan Roberts (Canton, GA/Sequoyah HS) will get time in right and center field when he’s not pitching.
I N F I E L D E R SThe Chargers infield should be one of the team’s strongest assets heading into the 2015 season. All of the infielders can make all the routine plays and sprinkle in a few web gems to solidify the “D”.
Matt Rivera (Milford,PA/Delaware Valley HS), Tyshwan Ervin (Canton, Ga./Cherokee HS) and Blake Oxenreider (Cedartown, Ga./Cedartown HS) will anchor the middle of the diamond. All are capable of playing both SS and 2B.
Nicholas Williams (Rome, Ga./Pepperrell HS) and Zach Neirstedt (Elmira, NY ./Elmira Free Academy) will man the hot corner for the Chargers.
Zach McCrum (Cumming, Ga./South Forsyth HS), Ridge Hillhouse (Woodstock,GA/Woodstock HS) and Jake Swan (Woodstock, GA/Etowah HS) will share the Chargers first base duties.
7
C A T C H E R SThe Chargers enters the 2015 season with two players on the roster that can see time behind the dish. Hill College. transfer, Brandon Gonzalez, (Dallas, Ga./East Paulding HS) headlines behind the dish. Sophomore, Alec “Sunshine” Arnsdorff (Clyo, Ga./Effingham HS) will also compete for time behind the plate for the Chargers this spring.
2015 Season
PreviewP I T C H E R SThe success of the 2015 Georgia Highlands baseball season will ride on the arms of the pitching staff. The Chargers have experience with five returning arms ; Dillon Swaggerty (Canton, Ga./The Walker School) Albert Harless (Dallas, South Paulding HS) Parker Acuff (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah HS). and Tyler Elwer (Roswelll, Ga./Lassiter HS), will lead the experienced the staff
The bullpen will be a critical part of the Chargers staff as Coach Mike Marra likes to play match ups late in the game. Mitchell Mannino (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove HS) will start the season as the Chargers closer. The submariner makes it difficult on hitters with his unorthodox delivery. Spelling Maninno will be his HS teammate from Hillgrove, Cade Douglas (Power Springs, GA/Hillgrove HS) another side winder looking to be the heir apparent.
LHP, Blake Metivier (Woodstock, GA/Etowah HS) will be called on to be the lefty specialist out of the pen.
RHP Will Griffin (Kennesaw, GA/Kennesaw MT. HS) will be used as the bridge to Mannino to hold down the 7-8th inning as well as get out of jams in the middle innings. Soph. Dalton Geekie will also be used as the power arm out of the pen late in games to set up Mannino.
Justin Pedone (Brooklyn, NY/New Dorp HS) Byran Quillens (Marbleton, GA/Pepplebrook HS), Amiel Abreu (Ft. Lauderdale, Fl/Western HS) Tristan Roberts (Canton, GA/Sequoyah HS) and Tanner Thomson (Woodstock ,GA/Woodstock HS) will all compete for a starting spot and long relief stints as the season progresses along.
DESIGNATED HIT TERSeveral candidates will compete for the DH spot, including the only pitcher who can handle the bat. Tanner Thomson (Woodstock, GA/Woodstock HS) can drive the ball with power from the left side of the plate along with Zach McCrum, Ridge Hillhouse and St. John’s University transfer, Nick Day (Lynn, MA/ Lawrence Academy) will also get some opportunities in the DH spot.
