Next Meeting: WEDNESDAY November 7, 5 p.m., at Seaman's Lodge: German Movie Night, showing "Good Bye, Lenin!" In German with English subtitles. IMDB Synopsis: "In 1990, to protect his fragile mother from a fatal shock after a long coma, a young man must keep her from learning that her beloved nation of East Germany as she knew it has disappeared." This is a funny premise! The movie is only about an hour and a half long, so come and see it! Doors open at 5:00, bar open, movie starts at 5:45 p.m. At 6:40, intermission with popcorn.

Celebration of Life for Bill NickerlThere will be a celebration of life for Bill Nickerl on Friday, December 14 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.at the residence of Erika, 11460 Cement Hill Road, Nevada City. Bill and Erika were founding members of our club and they also belonged to the Dance Group and hosted many practices on their deck. He also started the Happy Wanderer Hiking Group and was their leader until his failing health would not permit it any longer. If you are attending, please RSVP to Erika at (530) 265-9744. Notes from the Board Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 7 featuring a movie provided by John and Renate Hettrich - "Good-Bye, Lenin" -- in German with English subtitles. Also, we are going to recognize our New Members since March of this year. There are 19 of them! What a great recruiting year! The board is hoping all of you will be able to attend.

German Language Classes Interested in learning German? There is only one (as indicated by Herr
Erhobenem Zeigefinger at right) place in Nevada County to take classes, and that is RIGHT HERE at the Gold Country German-American Club!
Classes are FREE with club membership.
The Beginning level class is under the direction of Rebecca Claus; Intermediate level is taught by Erica Meier. These two classes assemble at various class
members' homes. For more information, call Rebecca at (916) 710-0033.
As is our custom, a Holiday Season party is being planned at Rebecca's house for all of the language learners. We shall eat, drink, exchange gifts, and sing German Christmas songs!

Conversational German GroupThe German Conversational Class will meet November 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Christel Hermansen's, 150 Sutton Way, Apt 132. Hope to see you there! The official hiking season is over, but clement weather continues. See page 5 for Fred and Karen's letter to all. Here are some photos of recent places hiked: Point Mariah, Devil's Peak, and Mount Judah. Spectacular!

The Arriflex Motion Picture CameraConsidering its ubiquitous use by Hollywood moviemakers, one might expect the Arriflex movie camera to have been an American invention, but in fact, it is German. At right is an early Arri from 1937. The Arriflex was the first motion picture camera to use through-the-lens viewing for the operator, similar to single-lens reflex 35mm film cameras. A system of rotating mirrors and prisms allowed the operator to see the exact image that was being recorded on film, without the parallax error present on viewfinder cameras. In addition, the Arriflex had variable shutter speed and interchangeable lenses. Keeping up with the times, modern Arri's use digital image sensors in place of 35mm film, built to the same size as the frames of film so that existing, often expensive, Zeiss lens sets can be used.

Greg Child Another hiking season has come to an end. Unpredictable, cold weather and the busy holiday season make it a good time to take a break. We did 32 different hikes this year and we covered a wide range of country from the lower Foothills to the higher Sierra, from Lakes Basin to Lake Tahoe. We enjoyed nature as it displays itself in grand style with raging rivers, waterfalls, meadows of wild flowers and never ending views from high mountain tops. We also had to endure dusty trails, wading through cold water and high winds. We are very fortunate to live in this part of the country. Hiking gives us camaraderie, happiness and strength from this form of exercise. Hopefully it helps us live long and healthy lives. I want to thank everybody who joined us and supported the “Happy Wanderers” hiking group and the German American Club. We have 50-60 people on the hiking list. Also I would like to thank all the people who volunteered to lead a hike, while we were gone on vacation. Thank you to all who throughout the season brought food, Kaffe/Kuchen and other refreshment. This made hiking even more special. We wish all of you a happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas and a wonderful time with family and friends. Good health in the coming year! In early spring we will be rested and ready to start a new hiking season. Fred (Karen too)

Be careful using step stools or step ladders! Our beloved Christa Benson slipped and fell off of a step stool like the one at left. She broke her right arm very near her shoulder, and healing is complicated because the break is so high on her humerus bone. According to the National Institutes of Health, older people are particularly vulnerable after falling from ladders. Although they generally fall from lower heights, the elderly sustain different and more severe injury patterns than younger people.
A Final Word to the Wise: Vorsicht!
Thanksgiving. The Traditional American Thanksgiving Holiday is on the fourth Thursday of November, but Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving is celebrated on September 24. The Schwenkfelders are descendants of members of a Protestant sect that originated in Germany during the Reformation who currently live in Pennsylvania Dutch country. The holiday commemorates safe passage from Germany to the American colonies by the original Schwendfelder Church members in 1734.
