Plans for EO G/S Evolution

•  Towards new/improved features/procedures/interfaces – Cal/Val – Geodata access – Bulk delivery – Flexibility for scientific processing and

defined/stabile configuration for operational processing

– Efficient Re-processing

Page 5: German EO missions: TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X, EnMAP, Firebird

Towards new technologies (private cloud) •  Impact analysis: access, data management, and (re)

processing •  Security aspects:(e.g. Satellite Data Security Law) •  Extend virtualization of computing infrastructure •  Evolve to private clouds at EOC sites •  … and using/sharing capacity with:

–  private clouds from other EO Center sites to increase capacity if needed

–  users in demand of IT-capacity (e.g. downstream services) –  extend to commercial clouds for peak load and non-

sensitive situation (regarding data security, algorithm security, IT security)

•  Archive must reside completely at EOC within the integrated approach (processing, access): data life cycle center

DLR LTDP Implementation

Activities & Status

•  Contribute to LTDP Guidelines and Preserved Dataset Content (PDSC) document updates as active LTDP WG & GEO task member

•  Performed detailed LTDP Guidelines compliance and impact assessment

•  Compiling complete PDSC for TerraSAR-X mission

•  Investigating data management concepts to include complete PDSC within EU project SCIDIP-ES

•  Contributing to ESA LTDP Architecture

•  Starting discussion on concept for using persistent identifiers for EO data in LTDP WG

Page 9: German EO missions: TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X, EnMAP, Firebird

DLR LTDP Experience & Recommendations Experience

• Need for (funded) LTDP still difficult to convey to mission-owners

• Rising awareness noticeable now in EO and other communities (Climate Change Variables…)

• General data preservation experts & tools are available

Recommendations

• Explore LTDP practices and experience of communities outside EO and Earth Science

• Alignment of GSCB LTDP recommendations to standards (e.g. CCSDS OAIS & ACTDR, OGC*) to ensure interoperability

• Tailoring of generic LTDP tools, services, and standards for preservation of EO data

* OAIS - Open Archival Information System ACDTR - Audit and Certification of Trustworthy Digital Archives OGC - Open Geospatial Consortium

DLR HMA Implementation Status •  HMA CSW catalogue service

–  Embedded in EOWEB server layer, pre-operational since Nov 2011

–  Configured for GSC-DA missions TerraSAR-X (4 datasets) and IRS (12 datasets), in addition O3M-SAF (2 datasets)

–  Supports standard authentication (SAML) and authorization for individual datasets (within EOWEB), metadata schema updates ongoing

•  HMA ordering service –  Embedded in EOWEB server layer, DLR operational

deployment scheduled after GCM-IRS ORR Q2 2012 –  Used at DLR for IRS ordering –  Supports standard authentication (SAML) and

authorization (within EOWEB)

Page 12: German EO missions: TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X, EnMAP, Firebird

HMA Implementation in the Context of GSCDA Phase 2

•  Commercial distribution rights for TSX data rest with Astrium GEO / Infoterra GmbH –  Partnership ITD, DLR and Werum –  DLR HMA Browsing Service can be used directly by ESA –  HMA Ordering Service was implemented at TSXX (commercial Ground

Segment Infoterra) based on DLR Implementation –  Compliant with the

commercial and regulatory framework (SatDSIG) for ordering of TSX Products

–  HMA Orders placed to TSXX are processed internally, checked for SatDSiG compliance, then rerouted and placed via the nominal CIP Protocol to DLR GS

Page 13: German EO missions: TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X, EnMAP, Firebird

Lessons /Recommendations from GSCDA Project •  HMA Protocol must be tailored to accommodate the

commercial and regulatory reality •  Implementation was more complex and took more time than

anticipated on all sides •  No actual operational experiences from use of HMA can be

reported, as the HMA interfaces exposed by TSXX have not yet been used by ESA CDS.

•  Extend support of HMA services for future national missions, e.g. Catalogue/Ordering/Feasibilty Analysis for TSX-2, Online Data Access for EnMAP

•  Extend use of HMA interfaces between clients/portals and data centers, example at DLR: EOWEB GeoPortal using HMA CSW/Ordering (currently under development)
