Dear valued guests and participants,

Today the Mongolian food industry consists of more than 2000 companies. With annual capacities of up to 240.000 tons of processed meat and about 440 mio. liters of milk the industry is poised for further growth. The country has plenty of land reserves for agricultural use and with more than 40 mio. of cattle, sheep and goats the potential for a significant increase in meat output is remarkable. Particularly when it comes to meat, very little is being processed or even exported. However, the Mongolian government shows strong interest in promoting the development of the food industry as well as the processing of various agricultural products. Key will be a further modernization of facili-ties, especially when it comes to slaughterhouses, meat processing, milk processing as well as the packaging and storing of processed food.

The event “German-Mongolian Corporate Days 2013 – Food Tech” is a state-of-the-art information platform to stimulate dialogue and inform about latest trends and developments. This event is where theory and practice come together: in addition to exhibiting products, companies will also deliver specialist lectures, workshops and interactive audience events. In keeping the topics in focus, the speakers present their up-to-date information as part of a dialogue with the Mongolian, international and interdisciplinary audience made up of representatives of private sector companies, public institu-tions, experts, users and scientists. With a significant number of German participants exhibiting their goods and services, topics such as cold storage technologies and meat processing can be explored on supplier/ client level, but also in discussions featuring highly professional experts from relevant fields of expertise.

The event will highlight today's requirements and possibilities for a professional, efficient and healthy food processing and food packaging industry. It will help decision makers from different sectors of the Mongolian food industry to get new ideas on how to tackle existing challenges, as well as to find new business partners abroad. It also shows that GIZ and the German government aim to work closely with the Mongolian and international private sector to make Mongolia's economic development sustainable and beneficial to all parties concerned. The Integrated Mineral Resource Initiative – Contributing to pro-poor sustainable growth

The Integrated Mineral Resource Initiative – a Partnership for Sustainable Development

Over recent years, the world´s commodity markets have been highly volatile. Supposedly reliable commodity suppliers, especially in the rare-earth elements (REE) sector, have introduced various export restrictions, resulting in significant price increases and even economically motivated scarci-ties in some cases. Moreover, new market participants from the emerging economies have triggered an unexpectedly strong demand for raw materials.

Transparent market conditions for all stakeholders are of fundamental importance for an inclusive and sustainable development of the raw materials sector. Mongolia has yet to fully utilize its wealth for the benefit of its population. In present-day Mongolia unemployment, fact-based policy-making, and the business environment are challenges that are still to be mastered. With the prospect of a boom in the extractive industry, the country is keen to establish the right framework conditions to achieve quality growth in the raw materials sector, in order to generate decent jobs and inclusive development. The Integrated Mineral Resource Initiative (IMRI) supports Mongolian decision-makers in private and public organizations focusing on:

1. Good Economic Governance in the Mineral Resources Sector, 2. Capacity Building for Sustainable Economic Policy, and 3. Promotion of Cooperation in the Mineral Resources Sector.

The Integrated Mineral Resource Initiative (IMRI) brings together three federal ministries (the Fed-eral Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Federal Ministry of Economy and Technology and the Federal Foreign Office), three implementing organizations (GIZ, Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt) and the private sector of Germany and Mongolia.

IMRI focuses on supporting Mongolia’s efforts to build a national development strategy based on the mining sector. It aims to improve the institutional and economic policy framework that allows investments and revenue generation in the raw materials sector to be used for sustainable economic growth, therefore benefitting the Mongolian population in an inclusive, pro-poor approach.

A service offered by the Integrated Mineral Resource InitiativeMongolia – A country with great potential

Mongolia is one of the world’s richest countries in terms of raw materials and has considerable deposits of coal, copper, gold, calcium fluoride, zinc and uranium. According to estimates by the International Monetary Fund, the real growth of Mongolia’s gross domestic product will reach 25% by 2013 and per-capita income will more than double from today’s 5.000 USD to 12.000 USD by 2021.In order to diversify its economy and to develop its mineral resource sector, Mongolia is dependent on foreign direct investment. The country is lacking capital investment as well as technical compe-tency for the extraction and the processing of its mineral resources.

On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) the Integrated Mineral Resource Initiative (IMRI), lead managed by GIZ, is strengthening the capacities for the sustainable deployment of FDI in the sectors of mineral resources and infrastructure.

German Center of Excellence – Show-case of the German Economy

Although Mongolia offers interesting opportu-nities, many German companies do not want to enter the Mongolian market with a subsidiary company or a sales representative right away. The distance between Germany and Mongolia as well as the present circumstances of doing business in Mongolia – not to mention the con-siderable costs that come along with it - often make German companies hesitate about their engagement.

Therefore IMRI affords German companies the opportunity, to introduce themselves to the Mongolian market as well as potential busi-ness partners. With the support of IMRI, Ger-man businesses can enter the Mongolian mar-ket step by step.

German technology and German know-how are highly appreciated in Mongolia. The Ger-man Center of Excellence offers a platform where German businesses can make contact with potential customers by showcasing their products, providing informational brochures, and offering videos and company presentations.
