There were ~ trans.-maihng schemes thai openltcd in IJtUtral countries which relayed eom:spondtnct and patkages between Germany, Gtmlan octuJlIoo counlries and All ied countries. LABOR CAMP MAIL

The military conscription created an extreme soortage of manpower for the industries contributing to the German war machine. One oolution to this problem was to recruit skilled workers from other countries. lbis program was administered by the German Workers Front (OAF).

The other oource of labor were citizens of occupied countries who were "drafted~ to work in German war industrics. 1bese workers went voluntarily, or thcy were rounded up and shipped to labor sites. Housed in sub-almps of K.L Wiemer-Buchenwald, K.L Neuengamme, etc., their wages and Hving conditions were minimal. It was a fine line that separated these workers camp from the concentration camp.

"Guest" workers paid postage at the domestic post card or letter rate. Other postal sen-ices were paid at the international ratc.

The handstamp instructs that replies (to correspondence) are to be made by postcard, written in Gennan and forwarded through the "Altcstcnrat deT Judcn in Prag" (Counsel of Jewish Elders in Prag).

A concentration camp in a class by it self, Theresienstadt was originally a to ..... n in Czechoslovakia. In Nov., 1941 the town was evacuated and set aside for Jews. The outward impression was that of a resort or 'rest camp" for the wealthy or elderly, with beautiful buildings, banks. movies, theater and concerts. Theresienstadt was the only concentration camp open to inspection by the International Red Cross. In reality. it was just a stop over before ~ventual transport to the death camps of Auschwitz or Birkenau.
