1.0 The Opportunity

The Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University is truly a model for beyond business as usual.

The reputation of the Faculty is growing around the world, and Desautels is building its brand of

distinction and excellence. Research productivity has grown, program enhancements have been made,

and exciting new programs have been introduced. The Faculty’s very successful $75m fundraising

campaign has helped in positioning Desautels at the forefront of world-class management education.

This is the environment for the new Dean, a dynamic leader and scholar, who will have the opportunity

to work with the Faculty to achieve even greater levels of distinction in the future.

2.0 McGill University

McGill University is among the world’s most prestigious institutions of

higher learning. A founding member of Universitas 21 and one of only

two Canadian members of the Association of American Universities,

McGill has the most international student body of any Canadian

university, drawing students from 150 countries.

Consistently ranked among the top 25 universities in the world, McGill

comprises two campuses, eleven faculties, eleven professional schools,

and over 300 programs of study. Over 1000 of McGill’s 1700 tenure-

track, full-time faculty have been appointed since 2000, bringing vitality to teaching and research endeavours.

McGill has recruited 159 Canada Research Chairs, employs 11,000 people, and is home to more than 38,000

students, over 8800 of whom are graduate students (including 2965 doctoral candidates). In the province of

Quebec, the University has an economic impact of $5.2 billion annually.

The University boasts an international network of

250,000 alumni, including nine Nobel Laureates, 136

Rhodes Scholars (which is more than any other

university in Canada), two Canadian Prime Ministers,

28 foreign ambassadors, three Pulitzer Prize winners,

and 28 Olympic medalists.

Located in Montreal, Quebec, one of the world’s most exciting and vibrant cities, McGill is distinguished by the

excellence of its faculty, the dedication of its staff, the talent and quality of its students, the contributions of its

alumni, and its exceptional record in both teaching and research. The main campus is set upon 32 hectares, and

is among the most beautiful university campuses in the world.

For nine consecutive years, McGill has been ranked first among Canada’s medical-doctoral universities by

Maclean’s, a prominent business publication in Canada. For more detailed information about McGill, please visit

3.0 The Desautels Faculty of Management

BusinessWeek, Canadian Business, Forbes, Financial Times

and The Economist rank the Desautels Faculty of

Management as one of the world’s top international

business schools. Over 100 full-time academic staff,

recruited from around the world, bring a global

perspective to Desautels’ undergraduate, graduate and

executive programs, and the 2,700 students who make up

the community are some of the world’s brightest and

best. The Faculty approaches education from a multi-

sector management perspective, rather than a business

perspective, and espouses an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to teaching, research, learning, and

practice. Desautels encourages a global perspective in its programs, and values a holistic approach to

education that prepares students to successfully manage and lead in today’s increasingly interconnected

world. By bringing together some of the world’s leading professors, brightest students, and industry

experts, and providing a learning and research environment judged to be excellent and of the highest

international calibre, the Faculty is a leader in advancing management pedagogy.

Over the last few years, the Faculty has enjoyed tremendous growth. With Marcel Desautels’ generous

donation of more than $30 million, the Faculty has renovated its facilities, made a substantial investment

in student advising and career services, and has attracted 35 new professors. The Faculty has strengthened

the undergraduate curriculum, making it more interdisciplinary; and the MBA program has been

redesigned to ensure that its graduates are prepared for a dynamic future. The gift received by the Faculty

has also strengthened its research capacity, and faculty members and students have been making

significant contributions to national and international management practice and discussion. As a result,

the Desautels’ gift has contributed to the Faculty’s objective of providing students and professors with

enhanced tools and resources for building their long‐term success.

The Faculty was granted the prestigious European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) accreditation by

the European Foundation for Management Development, a testament to the Faculty’s strengths. Beginning

in 2014, MBA programs that wish to participate in the Financial Times MBA rankings must be accredited

by either EQUIS or the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB); having been

officially granted accreditation from EQUIS, McGill is one of 142 top international business schools that

will be included in yearly rankings.

The following “FACTS AT A GLANCE” section provides more information about this remarkable Faculty, its

4.0 The Role

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is a member of the university’s academic leadership team, and is

responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Desautels Faculty of Management. Given the

Dean’s broad and deep mandate, the University is seeking a visionary leader and scholar with significant

senior level administrative experience preferably acquired in a complex university environment.

Broad areas of responsibility include:

throughout Desautels, and effectively communicating this mission to external constituents and the

broader University community;

external stakeholders, which will, when executed, ensure the Faculty’s continued success;

Fostering a positive environment for faculty, staff, and students, and working collegially with the entire

including the McGill community and its other Faculties, the Faculty Advisory Board (FAB), international

Providing proactive, visionary leadership for Desautels in a globally-competitive environment.

Research Activity

As a champion for excellence in management research, continuing the promotion of excellence and

creativity in research;

Developing relationships with federal and provincial granting agencies, as well as other funding sources,

to advance research and scholarship activity within the Faculty;

Promoting interdisciplinary research across the Faculty and with other Faculties, supporting faculty

progressive dialogue amongst the many constituents that make up the Desautels community;

Fostering an environment for the pursuit of world-class research, ensuring opportunities for scholars to

faculty members;

Continuing to cultivate an environment where, throughout its various programs, the Faculty seeks to

attract a diverse set of the best students from around the world;

their participation (such as networking events and expert panel discussions);

Page 8: Gerri Woodford, Partner, Academic Practice (National

As an experienced administrator who understands the challenges linked to successful recruitment and

retention, devoting considerable time and resources to attracting exceptional new hires and, when new

hires become part of the Desautels community, providing them with superior orientation and support.

5.0 Aspirations for the Faculty

Since 2008, the Desautels Faculty of Management has undergone a period of significant transformation.

Changes have been made to student support services and academic programs, significant renovations and

technological upgrades have been made to the 120,000 square foot Bronfman Building where the Faculty

is currently housed, 35 new professors have been hired, and the intellectual richness and research capacity

of the Faculty has grown.

While the aspirations and goals for the Faculty are both many and varied, consultations with community

stakeholders have provided much to reflect upon. Specifically, there is general agreement amongst the

Faculty’s constituents that the next Dean, Desautels Faculty of Management will need to devote time and

attention to the following areas in particular:

Academic Life

The Faculty’s growth initiatives over the last several years have led to successful outcomes for the Faculty

and the university. Over that time, undergraduate admission standards have risen consistently—

they are now the highest among large programs at McGill, and are the most stringent among management

schools in Canada. In fact, the BCom program has enjoyed the highest entrance requirements among

Canadian schools for the past several years, a signal of its rising excellence. The Faculty’s graduate

students have been trailblazers in their work, and have undertaken groundbreaking research and study to

benefit the global community. Recently, a team of four Desautels MBA students triumphed over 10,000

applicants from around the world to win the 2013 Hult Prize. The prize earned them $1 million toward

their research enterprise and was bestowed by former U.S. President Bill Clinton at the Hult Prize Global

Finals. With the exceptional student population that Desautels has attracted, the Dean will work with the

Faculty to continue attracting a diverse range of students, researchers, and professors who collectively

represent the world’s finest, and who will contribute to the Faculty’s distinction. The Dean will work with

the faculty to bring improvements to the PhD program, paying particular attention to funding, student

quality, curriculum and academic job placement. A continuing aspiration, and a focal point for the new Dean,

will be to position Desautels as part of the Quebec community, as well as nationally and internationally,

improving opportunities for graduates both locally and abroad.

Research

Desautels has been ranked among top business schools in Canada for research productivity. Its faculty make

an impact by contributing to policy work in Canada and abroad, and their insights and scholarly

communications can be found in some of the world’s most prestigious publications. The new Dean will make

it a continuing commitment to support and advance research and research outputs to the enhancement of the

distinction of the Faculty. To remain competitive with the best management schools, Desautels must build on

Page 9: Gerri Woodford, Partner, Academic Practice (National

9

www.odgersberndtson.ca

its current research achievements; the Faculty’s eight on-campus Research Centres and three Business

Consortia will provide a leveraging opportunity in this regard. Their activity, which embraces every critical

business application and discipline, provides focal points to foster teaching, research and industry

interface around key management issues. The new Dean will make it a continuing commitment to support

and advance research and research outputs to further enhance Desautels’ global research profile.

The Undergraduate Program

The primary objective of the BCom program is to prepare students for effective professional and managerial

careers. Students learn to take calculated risks, work as part of a team, and develop the necessary skills to

lead others, in an environment that fosters both theoretical and applied learning. The program’s highly

flexible curriculum balances breadth and depth in management education. Students follow either a 90 or

120 credit program that consists of a selection from 10 majors, 10 concentrations, 3 minors, and 4 honours

programs, providing a diversity of options from which students can choose. With a student body drawn

from over 60 countries, the emphasis on international and interdisciplinary experiences is a particular

feature of the program, with students able to earn credits from more than 80 top-ranked universities

around the globe. The Management Undergraduate Society (MUS) is the hub of student life, sponsoring a

variety of events and activities, clubs and committees. The new Dean will engage with the MUS, working

with them as they strive to achieve their goal of contributing to the excellence of the student experience at

Desautels.

Operating Budget

The Faculty’s operating budget has increased from less than $20M in 2005 to more than $35M today. The

Faculty has benefited from investment on the part of the University, as well as friends, and alumni. The

Dean will work diligently to maintain the favourable relationships that the Faculty enjoys with these

groups, and will be skilled at monitoring and allocating funds in a manner that serves the Faculty’s short-

and long-term goals.

Desautels has also benefited from the recent agreement made with the Quebec government around the

self‐funding model. Essentially, the agreement qualifies the Desautels MBA program as a specialized

program under Quebec law, giving the program the ability to set its own tuition levels. This agreement

provides the Faculty with an important opportunity for further growth, which will enhance the Faculty’s

position in an increasingly competitive global management school environment.

Capital Expansion

The varied opportunities and initiatives within the Faculty will require continued renewal and expansion of

the Faculty’s resource base (financial, human, technological, and structural). The Faculty has identified the

need for a new building to sustain its growth in order to ensure the high quality and value of the Desautels

experience. The new Dean will work closely with the Desautels community to implement, launch, and execute a

new capital campaign. To ensure its success, and to increase the financial strength of the Faculty, the Dean will

need to increasingly assert Desautels’ unique position as a management school which serves both a public

and private sector purpose. S/he will not simply meet the standards of management education set by others, but

will play an active role in charting a path that sets a new standard for management education, enjoining

others to contribute to its success.

Page 10: Gerri Woodford, Partner, Academic Practice (National

10

www.odgersberndtson.ca

The Environment for Management Education

Leading from strength, the new Dean will join Desautels at a propitious time when solid fundamentals

are in place, and the opportunity is there to continue to advance on many fronts. However,

opportunities and aspirations for the Faculty do not present themselves in a vacuum. Management

Schools continue to be challenged to graduate leaders who possess an understanding of real -world

management issues such as globalization, ethics, governance, and the emerging field of analytics.

Online education is becoming increasingly popular as a medium for course delivery, challenging the

conversation around teaching excellence and the classroom experience.

6.0 Candidate Qualifications

To balance the many demands and opportunities presented in a globally-ranked Management Faculty, the

successful candidate will be an extraordinary visionary and globally-minded leader. S/he must thrive in a

collegial culture, and have a natural tendency toward inclusivity, consultation, and transparency.

7.0 About Montreal, Quebec

McGill University is located in Montreal, the second largest city in Canada next to Toronto, and the 15th

largest in North America. In 2012, QS World University Rankings ranked Montreal as the 10th-best place in

the world to be a university student.

Based on GDP, Montreal has the second-largest economy among

Canadian cities, and is a critically important centre for culture and

entertainment, commerce, finance, industry, technology, and world

affairs. In the finance industry, for example, the legal corporate head

offices for two of Canada’s five largest banks are in Montreal, and in

the area of entertainment, Montreal plays headquarters to a number

of television and movie production studios.

According to the 2009 preliminary rankings of the International Congress and Convention Association

(ICCA), an organization that assists with organizing, transporting, and accommodating international

events, Montreal was named North America’s number one host city for international association events.

Montreal showcases a vast number of buildings which carry true architectural presence. There are 50

National Historic Sites of Canada in the city of Montreal, which is more than any other city in Canada.

Montreal is composed of 19 large boroughs further subdivided into small neighbourhoods, each of them

offering their own unique character.

Montreal’s urban culture is truly exceptional. The

city is home to many cultural festivals, including:

the Montreal International Jazz Festival, which

holds the 2004 Guinness World Record as the

world’s largest festival and, every summer,

welcomes over 2 million visitors; the Montreal

World Film Festival, which has a diversity of films

from all over the world; and, the Just for Laughs

comedy festival, which is the largest international

comedy festival in the world. Monocle magazine

refers to Montreal as “Canada’s Cultural Capital”.
