Brunswick Gets PhysicalWe know how hard it can be to start getting active especially if you have been inactive for sometime due to circumstance, weight or illness. Walking into an exercise class or going to the pool can seem very daunting. That’s why at Brunswick Gets Physical we take a very non-judgemental approach to helping you get started.

You choose what you would like to do and at what pace and one of our friendly Buddies will support you all the way.

We have fabulous initiatives for you and your Buddy to use to get moving, the support is free and many of the programmes below are free too!

Bike Lend SchemeAs part of the project you and your Buddy can borrow bikes from here at the centre for a mornings cycle ride. You could even take a picnic purchased from our Healthy Living Cafe here at the centre.

Not only do we have a new allotment that needs lots of work but we also have a Secret Garden here at the Centre. We are always looking for people to help out so not only will you start getting active but you will have some real results to show at the end of it too.

New Parents Trim TrailThis is a fabulous way to increase your fitness levels after having a baby. It does not matter what level of fitness you are starting from our friendly Buddies will support you all the way. Baby can even come too!

Page 7: Get Active Guide 2010 - 2011

It doesn’t have to be one of our initiatives that gets you moving, if you have always wanted to try swimming but have been too nervous to go alone then you and your Buddy can go together. You can even start by just going for a healthy walk around one of the Measured Miles in our local parks.

If you want to find out more please call Brunswick Gets Physical for a friendly chat on 01926 422123 or follow the link on our website www.brunswickhlc.org.uk

Walking in Warwick District

Warwick District Council will be installing a number of measured routes in parks in the district over the coming year with the aim of encouraging residents to do more physical activity. The routes can be used for walking, jogging, or general exercise and a measured mile route has already been installed at Victoria Park in Leamington Spa.

Did you know that:

Walking an extra 20 minutes every day will burn off around 7 pounds of body fat a year. The average time to walk a mile is 20-30 minutes and can burn 100 calories, as much as swimming for 10 minutes. Exercise also improves your mood and helps reduce stress. The minimum recommended physical activity levels for adults is 5x30 minutes moderate activity per week, and 60 minutes per day for children, activities could include brisk walking and jogging.

Take a walk along the way marked Riverside Walk between Leamington Spa and Warwick. Visit www.warwickdc.gov.uk/riversidewalk for more information.

14

School Sports Partnerships are families of secondary and primary schools based around a ‘hub’ Sports College (Kenilworth School and Sports College) that work together to increase sports opportunities for more young people linking with local community sports facilities and development programmes. What are school sports partnerships trying to achieve?

By the end of the academic year 2010-2011, 40% of young people to take part in 5 hours PE and Sport a week (3 hours for 16-19 year olds) By the end of the academic year 2010-2011 – 80% of 5-16 year olds in every school sports partnership to take part in 3 hours of PE and Sport organised by school By the end of the academic year 2012-2013 – 60% of young people taking part in 5 hours PE and Sport a week (16-19 year olds 3 hours)

How can the school sports partnership help your child’s school?

Support schools to provide new competitive sports opportunities Support teachers and teaching assistants to attend PE and Sport related training courses Access free PE equipment for schools Help schools link to local clubs who can deliver opportunities for the school, on and off site Provide students both primary and secondary with opportunities to develop their leadership skills and to volunteer in the community

...and lots more

The Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games, is a unique combination of private, public and voluntary organisations working together to maximise the opportunities around the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

With the announcement that Coventry will be a host city for part of the Olympic football competition in 2012, the sub-region could not be better placed to make the most of the Games coming to the UK before, during and long after 2012.

Our focus is built on engaging as many people and organisations around the key areas of Sport, Culture, Business, Tourism, Education and Pre-Games Training Camps. To achieve this we have over 20 projects and initiatives that are designed to involve and inspire everyone to be the best that they can be and to be part of this once in a life time opportunity.

How can you get involved?

The London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics will be Games like no other. For the first time, the excitement, benefits and involvement in the Games are being spread right across the host nation through sporting, cultural, volunteering and educational projects. Here are just some of the ways you can get involved with London 2012:

Inspire Mark:

The Inspire Mark is an accreditation given to non commercial projects that have been inspired by the London 2012 Games and reflect the core Olympic and Paralympic values. By receiving the Inspire Mark, projects are then officially part of the Cultural Olympiad which is a four year programme of cultural activity, events and festivals.

Volunteering:

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will require over 70,000 volunteers to make the event happen. The application process is due to open in the summer of 2010 and is open to anyone over the age of 18 who is able to commit to 10 days of volunteering during the Games period.

Get Set Education programme:

This is a scheme run by London 2012 to provide a range of free online resources for teachers and students to apply to projects and work so that they can incorporate the Olympic and Paralympic values into their education.

Tickets:

The 10 million tickets for the Games will be available from early 2011. The process for applying for tickets will be handled through the official London 2012 website www.london2012.com. You can register your interest and for ticketing updates here as well.

If you would like to find out more information about what 2012 activity is happening in Coventry and Warwickshire please visit: www.cswp.org.uk/london2012 or search for CSWP2012 on You Tube, Facebook or Twitter and keep up to date with all our projects, events and success.

Developing a website, to be launched in Autumn 2010 which will detail the activities in the district building up to 2012, allowing us to build a picture of how we are part of this unique, once in a lifetime opportunity.

Adults should do a minimum of 30 minutes a day of physical activity on 5 days or more per week (5x30) and for children, 60 minutes every day.

To maintain good health you should do the above at the “moderate intensity level”, where your breathing and heart rate will usually increase, where you can feel your pulse and you should feel warmer and possibly be sweating on a hot day. You can do the minutes in different spells of 10 minutes or more. You can build this up gradually and remember any increase in activity will be beneficial!

Examples of activities could include

• brisk walking • gentle jogging • swimming • tennis • badminton • dancing • aerobics • cycling• Active conservation/getting active while helping the environment

There are lots of different fun ways you can meet the recommended levels and they don’t have to involve playing sport, although sport counts too! Have a look at some of the information on the next page to find out about ways of being active.

If you are active

• you can live longer,

• help your heart, lungs, bones and other

body parts and functions.

• reduce stress and make you feel good.

• prevent yourself from getting various

health conditions and problems now or

when you are older.

Its worth being active and doesn’t have to be a struggle or hassle as it can be fun and you can include it as part of your everyday life!

Be Active
