YOU SAID... WE DID...“We would like to not have to carry our money around.”

Arrange for a Cashless system to be introduced in September 2016 and added chip and pin machines to three College Cafés.

“ Can the heating be better in the I Block.”

Arrange for the boiler to fire up earlier in the morning.

“ Can we have free meals.” Provide free lunches and breakfasts from the start of the year.

“ We would like more enrichment activities.”

Purchase more enrichment resources including games, clubs, hired a DJ plus other fun activities. We did also arrange for students to run enrichment classes for other students.

“ We don’t think we should have to pay £1 per trip on the College bus.”

Negotiate with the bus company so the college buses are now free.

“We would like more choice of food in the Cafés.”

Review the menus available in the cafes and introduced more options including special themed menu days.

“ Can bottled water be cheaper?” Reduce the price of bottled water.

“ We would like an end of year do for the Student Council.”

A Thank You celebration event at The Glass House in April.

“ We would like Gym facilities for when we have a longer lunchtime.”

Inform you that gyms will be available next year at each centre.

“ Why are there no colour printers around the college as we need them for our courses?”

Inform you that there is a colour printer for use in the LRC. If you save your work on a USB the LRC staff will provide free printing for you.

“ SCCGuest wi-fi doesn’t allow a tablet or laptop to connect.”

Increase our broadband to ensure that the wi-fi is better and we shall also be looking at improving this further as part of our summer works.

“ Why are the shuttle buses always late when dropping students off in the morning?”

Negotiate with the bus company so next year the college buses will take students directly to their centre so that no shuttle bus will be required.

Students Take Part in Interview for Deputy Principal RoleStudents from the Student Council were on one of the interviewing panels for the role of the Deputy Principal. The students asked questions about how the new Deputy Principal would manage certain situations, how they would ensure that students get the best deal and what new initiatives they may bring to the College.

The students did a great job and have since welcomed the New Deputy Principal, Michael J Walsh, to the College.

FREE* College BusesYipppeeeeee! From September 2016, College buses will be FREE* again (*£20 annual permit fee applies). College Principal John Spindler introduced Principal’s Question Time (PQT) this academic year. Taking place termly at each centre, students get to ask John and the Executive Team any question they like. Questions have ranged from wanting new items, making suggestions, to voicing their views on what they are not so keen on and would like to change. Each session starts with feedback from the previous meeting before taking new questions.

Students like to be able to ask their questions directly and know that they will get a reply and where possible actioned. John Spindler said “PQT is great, it enables me and the Executive Team to see what our students want and for us to make their experience better. There have been lots of great suggestions and many we have implemented, so great for everyone”.

FOR STUDENTSNew Cashless SystemStudents have asked for a while for a cashless system to be in use at the College – making it easier and quicker to pay for food and drink in the Cafés.

From September 2016 a new system will be in place enabling students to pay cashless or with cash. We are hopeful that this will also speed up the service in the Cafés too.

Chip and Pin Machines in CafésStudents also asked if we could have Chip and Pin machines in the Cafés. We are delighted to advise that they are now in place at FutureSkills, Pendleton (Main Refectory) and Eccles (Café Bar).

Thank You Event at The Glass HouseStudent Council, Ambassadors and Volunteer Task Force students were treated to an evening meal at The Glass House in May 2016, to say thank you for their hard work and commitment. Hosted by CEO/Principal John Spindler, John stated “We are so very proud of you all and the College is a much better College for the work that you all do”.

All students will also be recognised at the main College Awards Evening being held early July at The Lowry Theatre.

Fairtrade WeekStudents love this annual event and this year we were delighted to be able to give free Kit Kats and fruit smoothies to students. The Student Council members led the event at their centre, getting students making their own smoothies by peddling the smoothie bike.

Student Council ConferenceMembers of the Executive Student Council attended the College Consortium Learner Voice Conference in January at Aquinas Sixth Form College and the focus for the event was Equality and Diversity which provided valuable training and networking opportunities for the students.

Flying the Rainbow FlagThe Student Council have started a cross college Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans (LGBT) group and during International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBiT) week the rainbow flag was displayed around centres with a stall providing information on LGBT.

Ofsted Inspection Graded us GOOD!During the Ofsted inspection this year some of the Student Council met with the inspectors to provide information on the work of the Council and how learner involvement impacts on the College. This was received favourably by Inspectors and positive feedback was received.

Students Show Care For Their Community With Litter-Picking EffortsThe Volunteer Task Force was launched at the end of last year, and a rota was drawn up for students and staff to take turns to complete a number of community projects. As part of the monthly ‘Big Clean Up’ the team of dedicated volunteers spent Monday afternoon collecting rubbish around Irlam o’the Height as part of a major plan to improve the image of the area.

First year BTEC Business student Tatiana Resende joined the Volunteer Task Force when it was first established in November. The 17-year-old said: “I moved to Salford last year from France, and I found that being part of the Task Force was a great way to meet people, and show my dedication to my new community.”

Fellow volunteer, 16-year-old A-Level student Brogan Carter, added: “I enjoy interacting with others and making a difference to the environment around us. I feel that the community outside of college benefits as they can see the improvements and effort we are making; as a team we are making it a better place for both students and residents.

“I would like the Volunteer Task Force to continue next year as there will always be a need to encourage people to help out, it’s a great experience and it will give others a chance to contribute and take pride in the changes we are making.”

Meanwhile, a group of students and staff from the Skills for Working Life department at Eccles Sixth Form Centre took part in the ‘Clean for the Queen Day’. The nationwide campaign encouraged people across the country to tidy up for Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday, and the Salford students headed to Parr Fold Park in Walkden to do their bit for the local community.

Eccles Sixth Form Centre student James Hughes, 21, explained: “I decided to take part because Parr Fold Park is where I ride my bike and sometimes hang out with my friends, and this gave me something new to do. I enjoyed taking part as a group- the Skills for Working Life department are all friends and like to help each other out.”

“The work done by our students this week as part of the Volunteer Task Force and the ‘Clean for the Queen Day’ is a shining example of the dedication these young people show towards their local community,” commented Saf Arfan, Vice Principal for Development and Innovation at Salford City College. “It makes me immensely proud to see our students taking the time to engage with the local community to make a positive difference for the people that live there.”

What is the Student Council? The Student Council is made up of a group of students at each centre who want to help improve College life.

The Council meet on a regular basis to discuss issues and ideas that they have and this is then fed back to the Executive Council who also meet on a regular basis. The Student Council is vital to the College as it allows us to ensure that we are providing the very best service possible to our students and when occasionally this might not be the case, enables us to improve and make changes.

Barbara Weilding, Head of Services to Learners said “The Student Council is so valuable to us and our students have some great ideas. It is great to meet with them and really good when we can take action from their ideas. They all work together really well and understand that the College cannot always make changes”.

Each year the Chair of the Student Council is elected. This year this has been Rebecca Knowles, who is also the Student Governor. Rebecca leaves Salford City College this summer and the Executive Council will have a vote on who will take the role next year. Rebecca has done a great job and will be very much missed.

WE MUST BECOME THE CHANGE WE WANT TO SEE
