Welcome to new people at BayerBayer has appointed Steve Bishop as product manager forprofessional products. Having grown-up in Staffordshire, Stevegained an Agriculture and Food Science degree at NottinghamUniversity, and a masters in Environmental Science at Cranfield.Along the way he undertook a two year training programme withRentokil Initial, followed by five years working at Polypipe, asmarketing manager. Away from work he is a qualified falconerand keen rugby player.

Also new to Bayer is Katie Marwick, campaign planner forprofessional products. Katie has a degree in advertising and media from Coventry University.Finally, Greg Collins has been appointed to look after Bayer distributors in Ireland.

Changes at KillgermTony O'Dowd, Killgerm area sales manager for the WestMidlands, Wales and Ireland is to retire at the end of the year.Tony who has been with Killgerm for 25 years, is one of theindustry's 'characters' and will be much missed – if for no otherreason, who will lead the late-night singing in the bar after the

dinner at PestTech?

Graham Bingham, Killgerm area sales manager for Scotlandwill take on responsibility for Northern Ireland. From 1 January2015, Killgerm sales director, Peter Fielding, will become seniorsales manager and reduce his activities to three days a week as he wishes to spend more timewith his family. Peter will continue to look after customers in Cumbria, Northumberland, CountyDurham, Tyne & Wear, North and East Yorkshire. Finally, technical adviser Ian Parry, whojoined Killgerm in October 2013 is to be area sales manager for West & South Yorkshire,Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire & North Wales.

Pestaurant, Rentokil Initial's pop-up restaurant that challengedpassers-by in 11 countries to try an array of pest-related food, wascrowned the Grand Prix winner in this year's CorpComms awards.The awards are organised by the magazine for corporatecommunicators.

The first event, which took place in the City of London in August2013, offered diners an array of exotic cuisine, including sweetchilli pigeon burgers, salt and vinegar crickets and chocolate-dipped ants. In 2014 the event went international withPestaurants organised in 11 countries, including Lithuania,Australia and Trinidad.

Communications award for Rentokil

All go at what was P+LFirst-off was the announcement on 20 October that P+L Systemshad acquired the Environmental Care Group of De Ceuster ofSint-Katelijne-Waver, Belgium for an undisclosed sum.

This is a substantial acquisition for the company as it comprises thechemical formulation and manufacturing companies of DenkaInternational, based in Barneveld, Holland, and the Edialux-Formulex distribution business based in Bornem, Belgium withsubsidiaries in the Netherlands, France and Switzerland. In total itinvolves 135 employees.

To mark the transformation of the business, the Group has decidedto re-brand as 'Pelsis'. The new look includes a fresh logo, butretains the recognisable red and grey colours long associated withthe company. In addition the Pelsis Group now includes the newlyacquired Edialux, Luxanand Denka brands,as well asSX Environmental,Insect-O-Cutor, Networkand Synergetic.

Cockroaches to the rescueResearchers at North Carolina State University, USA havedeveloped technology that allows cyborg cockroaches, or biobots,to pick-up soundswith smallmicrophones andseek out the sourceof the sound. Thetechnology isdesigned to helpemergency personnelfind and rescuesurvivors in theaftermath of adisaster.

“In a collapsed building, sound is the best way to find survivors,”said Dr Alper Bozkurt, an assistant professor of electrical andcomputer engineering at NC State. The biobots are equipped withelectronic backpacks that control the cockroach's movements.

Two Kent companies mergeWesterham-based Safeguard Pest Control and Arrowguard PestControl Services from West Malling, Kent are joining forces tocreate a unified business which, they say, will then be able to tackleall aspects of pest control. Both are privately owned companies.Arrowguard was formed in 1970 and Safeguard in 1986. Both willcontinue trading under their own names.

Based in Tooting, London, Beaver Pest Control is helping lessfortunate people living in the area. Most recently, this November,they attended the South London Jobs Fair.

The idea is that housing association tenants go to the fair wherethey have opportunity to talk to potential employers about differentjobs and what they entail. If there is an interest on both sides thenthings can be taken further. As Beaver partner David Lodgeexplained: “We took on a tenant in the office via this process thelast time we attended and have also given numerous tenants tasterdays in the field. They get a chance to see what pest control is aboutand also gain some experience to add to their CV.

“Before working in pest control I was involved in social work, so asa company we have always played our part in voluntary communityactivities. Recently, an increasing number of our buyers, or tenderdocuments, ask for proof of corporate social responsibility (CSR).We feel proud to be able to demonstrate what we have alreadybeen doing in our local community,” concluded David.

At the international reception at PestWorld 2014, sponsored byUnivar Environmental Science, the first inaugural awards torecognise individuals who have played a significant part on theinternational pest control stage were presented.

The very first Global Ambassador Award went to Rob Fryatt ofSussex-based Xenex Associates. Part of the citation described Robas: “A global ambassador for the pest management industry beforewe even realised that we were an industry. He is fluent in multiplelanguages and has travelledand spoken at pestmanagement meetings invirtually every country inthe world.”

Unfortunately for the first timein many years Rob was notpresent at PestWorld and sounable to receive his awardin person.
