CITY NEWS

The City of Grosse Pointe Farms offers utility customers several options to make paying, accessing and understanding your bill easier.

The first option is setting up an automatic debit payment for paying your utility bill. This service allows you to have the City deduct the balance of your water bill from your bank account on the due date.

Once it is established you’ll never pay a late fee, worry about your mailed check arriving at City Hall on time or needing to change your mailing address when you’re out of town.

Recently, the City began offering an e-billing option to it’s utility customers. As an e-billing customer, you will no longer receive a paper bill in the mail.

Instead, you will receive your bi-monthly electronic bill by e-mail. By going paperless you help the environment and will be able to easily access your bills through your email account.

In addition, utility customers can look up their

Fence Regulations

Pay Utility Bills Online

Residents who plan on erecting a fence on their property should familiarize themselves with the City’s rules and regulations first. Here are several key items to keep in mind:

n Before a fence is erected, a permit must first be obtained from the City.

n Fences and walls that do not exceed four feet in height can be located anywhere on one’s property provided that fences and walls located in the front yard shall be set back at least two feet from the sidewalk or property line and shall be located so as not to restrict proper visual observation of vehicles or persons using the public right-of-way.

n Any fence adjoining the public right-of-way that will exceed four feet in height must obtain approval from City Council after neighbors are notified by the City.

n Fences along a driveway shall not obstruct ingress or egress of vehicles or of passengers from vehicles parked in the driveway.

Please call the Public Service Department before starting the process of designing and erecting a fence at (313) 885-4285.

Fall Leaf CollectionThe main objective of the Loose-Leaf Collection Program is to increase the level of service to the residents while protecting the local infrastructure and environment.

It is estimated that the average resident spends six hours per season bagging leaves, depending on leaf bulk and size of lot.

With more than 4,000 households in the community, the loose leaf collection method reduces the overall time spent bagging by 24,000 hours.

Not having to purchase special bags for leaf collection saves money and time.

The system has proven to be very effective. In one day, three public works crews collected 150 tons of leaves.

Although volumes have multiplied, the work can still be handled in a normal

work week. This is due to the efficient use of the broom-and-chute method. This innovative design was awarded the “Superior Innovation” award from the Michigan Municipal League.

Although this method is a superior innovation, there are still some challenges that arise every year. These include cars parked on leaf piles, piles scattering in the wind, and challenges that come with 73 dead-end streets and cul-de-sacs.

The start date is October 8 and the end date is November 30, weather dependent.

Please do not put your leaves in the street prior to 5 p.m. the day preceding your scheduled leaf collection.

past water usage, payment and billing history online by visiting bsaonline.com/?uid=1916 then searching for their property. The webpage features an easy to read graph to help you understand the historical water usage at your property. This information can be beneficial for household budgeting.

Gutters are part of your roofing system and they require regular maintenance to keep your home looking nice—and to help prevent damage from the elements.

By directing rainwater away from the perimeter of your home, gutters are the first line of defense against water seeping into your house.

So if your gutters are clogged with debris or not in operative shape, they will not

Gutters are Key Home Maintenance IssueWhen pet waste is improperly disposed of, it can be picked up by stormwater runoff and washed into storm drains or nearby water bodies. Since storm drains do not always connect to treatment facilities, untreated animal feces often end up in lakes and streams, causing significant water pollution. The City has installed pet waste stations for resident’s convenience along Grosse Pointe Boulevard, Chalfonte Avenue, Lake Shore Road and City Hall.
