The Transition to Digital Television (DTV) is Coming

To assist Emergency First Responders, a portion of present analog airwaves will be used for safety communications.

As a result, television stations nationwide must switch from analog to digital broadcasts by February 17, 2009.

Who will be affected? Every household with an analog TV that receives free over-the-air broadcasting signals via outside antenna or “rabbit ears” will be affected by the transition. Cable service or dish network subscribers will not be affected.

How do I Prepare for the DTV Transition?

It’s easy! The simple, low cost solution is to purchase a converter box – a

one-time expense.

What is a DTV Converter Box?

A DTV converter box is an easy-to-install electronic device that hooks up to your present television set.

The box converts the digital TV signal into analog and makes it viewable on your analog TV.

The boxes are expected to cost between $40 and $70 and are available for purchase at retail stores that sell electronic equipment. Once installed, you can continue to receive free over-the-air television.

You are eligible for a coupon to help defray the expense of the converter box.

The Federal Government (through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA)) is issuing coupons NOW for DTV converter boxes.

Households may apply for up to two coupons (valued at $40 each). These MUST be redeemed within three months (90 days) of receipt and they can only be used to purchase an approved converter box. Coupons have no cash value.
