Moving and packing services have been constantly evolving as new technologies and more competition come into the market. Hiring a moving company is no longer considered to be a luxury, but rather a basic necessity. As the amount of people moving locally, and long distance increases, there are many things one must pay attention to. Whether it is a local move in Washington, DC, Maryland or Virginia, or to another country, your primary concern as the home owner is the safety of your belongings, the professionalism of the people you hire, and the reasonableness of the price you pay. Just like you have questions for the company you may hire, they have questions for you as well. Remember, both parties have certain expectations, and information they need in order to help each other.

What information does the company need from you to help make this process as simple and easy as possible? This includes things such as the addresses at the origin and destination (if available). They will ask if there are stairs or elevators at both locations, and how close they can get to the main entrance. They will also ask if you have an inventory of items to be moved (good companies will work with you to create this list during the quote process if you do not have one ready). The important thing is to be as diligent and accurate as possible. The movers will also want to know if you plan to pack all of your materials ahead of time, or if you want full packing services. They will ask if there are any glass or fragile items that need special attention. Other things you need to consider is whether you will need storage options for your belongings. Good companies will generally provide their own storage options for you to consider if you do not want to get your own.

Why the need for all of this information? There are a lot of variables that go into providing you with an accurate estimate. Most of these questions are to determine the time and size/weight of your belongings. While each company may be different, no matter if you are in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington DC, there are two main ways companies provide you a quote. 1) For local moves, they will provide you an estimate based on the amount of hours they need to work (each company must charge you a minimum of 4 hours… 3 work and 1 transportation according to regulation) They will give you an hourly rate, and make an estimate based on the list of items you provide them. It does not matter whether you have a single box, or a five story house to move. Local moves do not charge by weight.

For long distance moves, the company

will charge you by either the cubic foot

(the amount of space your belongings

take up on the truck) or the weight of

your belongings. At Future Van Lines, we

prefer the cubic foot method as it is more

reliable, and much more easily verifiable

by our clients. The company will provide

you a rate per cubic foot, and you can

use this to compare the price between

competitors. You will only be responsible

to pay for the amount of belongings you

have. If you end up using less space

than in your quote, you will be charged

less. However, if you have more

belongings than what your quote

accounted for, you will also be

responsible to pay for the extra space.

REMEMBER: The more accurate your

inventory list is, the more accurate the

quote will be.
