Moran Taing. Many thanks to all the people who have been working so hard to prepare for the United States School of Piping and Drumming, the Grand Canyon Celtic Arts Academy, the Arizona Highland Celtic Festival and all it's related
activities. A special thanks to Doug Lintner who brought back lucky rocks from Ireland for the geology area and to Ken McIntosh who brought back holy well water from the auld country for the labyrinth workshop. Without this level of dedication
and commitment we would not have the wonderful layers of interesting things we do have at the festival! Hugs to all! I can't
wait!!!
Apologies. Apologies for not having more time to wax sentimentally about the wonderful
things we have going on at the 14th annual Arizona Highland Celtic Festival! It is
guaranteed to be better than ever! It is guaranteed to have more fun and interesting
stuff going on than ever! Don't miss it!
Get the word out

AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR
The American Revolution pitted fellow Scotsmen against one another for numerous reasons. Many of them changed sides numerous times during the war depending who was winning at the
time. However, in the end the Scottish people made a significant contribution in winning American Independence.
* George Washington was commander-in-chief of the American Army during the American Revolution and the first president of the United States of America.
* Thomas Jefferson, principle author of the Declaration of Independence and 3rd President of
the United States. * Two patriots of the American Revolution, Patrick Henry, a governor of Virginia, and General
Hugh Mercer, a survivor of the battle of Culloden, were of Scottish lineage.
* The first time the American "Stars and Stripes" flag was recognized by a foreign power (France) was when John Paul Jones, a Scot, raised the flag on his ship, the U.S.S.
Ranger. He would later be known as the father of the U. S. Navy.
* General William Lee Davidson: American patriot general who was killed in the Battle of
Cowan!s Ford, Huntersville, NC, Feb. 1, 1781. Davidson College was named in his honor.
* Major John Davidson, officer in the American militia and signer of the Mecklenburg
Declaration of Independence.
* General Henry Knox, first Secretary of War of the United States.
* Light Horse Harry Lee, famous General.
* Anthony “Mad Anthony” Wayne, a well known patriot general.
* Our Declaration of Independence was modeled after the Declaration of Arbroath which was
signed on April 6, 1320.
* More than half the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Scottish or of Scottish
descent.
* Major Patrick Ferguson, commander of the British troops at the Battle of Kings Mountain
where he was killed in battle. Ferguson invented the breech loading rifle.
* General Lachlan McIntosh, well respected American general, buried in Savannah, GA.
SCOTTISH AMERICANS AND THEIR MANY ACHIEVEMENTS
This is a short list of americans who were either born in Scotland or who are of Scottish
and / or Scots – Irish descent. By just glancing over this impressive list, it is plain to see
how each of these individuals has had a tremendous impact on the discovery and
development of the United States. The great contributions by the Scots and Scots –
Irish cannot be denied.

In the 2008 US Census community survey, an estimated 1.98 million Americans had Welsh
ancestry, 0.6% of the total U.S. population. This compares with a population of 3 million in
Wales. However, 3.8% of Americans bear a Welsh surname. Moreover, a particularly large
proportion of the African American population have Welsh names.History shows that there is
little evidence that the Welsh were among the slave-owning classes at this time, as most
immigrants were poor. "If the Welsh were not numerically prominent in the ranks of the slave
holders, how did African Americans come to make common use of Welsh names? In many
cases these surnames just indicate the fact that African Americans shared with the Welsh the
need to adopt fixed surnames at times when forenames commonly used in England had
become usual in both groups. When fixed surnames became necessary, a father's name
would tend to become a surname. John could become Jones and David, Davis or Davies.
Names like this, therefore, need not necessarily be evidence of a Welsh connection." John
Weston: Data Wales.
The proportion of the population with a name of Welsh origin ranges from 9.5% in South
Carolina to 1.1% in North Dakota. Typically names of Welsh origin are concentrated in the
mid Atlantic states, the Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama and in Appalachia, West Virginia
and Tennessee. By contrast there are relatively fewer Welsh names in New England, the
northern mid West, and the South West.
