Materials Needed• Chalkboardandchalk(orwhiteboardandmarker)• Pocketchart• Numbercardsandequationstrips• “Getto10!”activitysheet• Numbertilesreproducible• Scissors
Procedure1.Writeontheboard,“Howmanywayscanwemake8?”
2.Thenaskeightstudentvolunteerstocomeuptothefrontoftheroom.Havethestudentsstandingroupstorepresentexpressionsthatequaleight.Forexample,haveonestudentstandawayfromtheotherseventoshow1+7.Thenhavethestudentsdivideintotwoequalgroupstoshow4+4.
3.Invitetheclasstocalloutdifferentexpressionsforthestudentvolunteerstorepresent.Writeeachnewexpressionontheboard.
4.Tellstudents,“Wecanalsofindsubtractionexpressionsthatequaleight.Ifwehad10studentvolunteers,wecouldshow10–2.”
5.Invitestudentstothinkofothersubtractionexpressionsthatequaleight.Thenaddthosetothelistontheboard.
Guided Practice 1. Printandcutapartthenumbercardsandequationstrips.Placethenumbercardsalongthetoprowofapocket
chart.
2.Dividetheclassintogroupsoffiveorsix.
3.Mixuptheequationstripsanddistributethemamongthegroups.Instructstudentstoplacetheirstripsunderthecorrectnumbersonthepocketchart.
4.Afterallgroupshaveplacedtheirstrips,pointoutthatthepocketchartnowshowsfivedifferentwaystomakeeachnumber.
Independent Practice 1. Giveeachstudentacopyofthe“Getto10!”activitysheetandthenumbertilesreproducible.
2.Havestudentscutapartthetilesandplacethemfacedownorputtheminapaperlunchbag.Explainthatstudentswillbeusingthenumbertilestobuildfourdifferentequationsthatequal10.
3.Instructstudentstodrawonetileatatimeandplaceitinablankspaceontheactivitysheet.Ifstudentsdrawatiletheycannotuseinoneoftheequations,havethemplacethetileinadiscardspaceatthebottomofthepage.
4.Challengestudentstobuildallfourequationsbeforetheyfillupthediscardspaces!
