NOVEMBER 2018 NEWSLETTER2

Employee Highlight: Learn about “Dressember”Every year, thousands of advocates around the world take on the creative challenge of wearing a dress during the 31 days of December. Among these thousands are HSAC employees, Annie Johnson and Maygen Hetherington. It may seem simple and in essence, it is a simplistic idea. However, it’s bigger than a dress.

The dress serves as a conversation starter to educate the community about modern day slavery, human trafficking, and social injustice. Not the easiest topics to discuss in every day life - but real, nonetheless. The Seattle area has one of the highest rates of human trafficking on the west coast, and Snohomish county is not immune to this issue. By one recent estimate, 250 girls and women were reported as regularly trafficked in Snohomish County. A large number of these girls are adolescent runaways.

Globally, this issue is exploiting poor women and girls more than any other demographic. As Dressember ad-vocates, Annie and Maygen believe in the power of every day advocacy and are both doing their small part to help change this trend. By wearing a dress each day for the month of December, sharing campaign photos via social media and sparking conversations within the community, Dressember is about spreading the message of the inherit dignity of all people, and fighting for it locally and interna-tionally.

You can support Maygen and Annie’s Dressember team, “Pacific NorthDressed 2018”. Search for them on Face-book, Instagram or visit their Dressember campaign page at www.dressember-2018.funraise.org/team/pacif-ic-northdressed-2018. All donations go directly to vetted organizations that maximize funds to attack this issue from all angles; including legal representation, funding of investigations, covert operations and rescues, and the urgent after care needed for rescued victims.

Annie and Maygen welcome your questions and would love to chat with you if you’d like to learn more about the Dressember Foundation.

*Annie invites you to “Dance for Freedom” in her Red Hot Dance class on December 29th. Wear your dress to class and bring a small donation to her campaign. Donations are always welcome, never expected.

Running the NY marathon is a huge accomplishment - just for the distance, time, and discipline required to complete the race. For Kristi Lin, it goes way beyond these elements.

Kristi has always had a love for running and living an active lifestyle. In 2001, living in NY city, Kristi noticed a group of individuals in or-ange shirts running loops around the block where she lived. Kristi’s husband, Dan, was working at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, across the street from where they were living together. These runners had donned their orange in honor of Fred Lebow, a man who dreamed of a world without cancer. In 1991, while he was being treated for brain cancer at MSK, he jogged through hospi-tal hallways, determined to find a way to raise money for a cure. Fred encouraged runners competing in the New York City Marathon to raise money for each mile they ran, and designated MSK its first official charity.

With tears in her eyes, Kristi shared, “I remember, I was pregnant with our first child, and so sick. I just felt terrible. Seeing patients, undergo-ing treatment for cancer and running in honor of this cause, it instantly changed my mindset, and I didn’t feel sick anymore.” Kristi decided then, she was going to run the NY marathon and it was going to be for Fred’s Team. In honor of her 40th birthday, both she and Dan ran the NY marathon along with 300 other Fred’s Team members. On Nov 4th of this year, 10 years later, they ran it again with 900 other team mem-bers!

As she ran the route of the race, coming up on Queensboro, near Sloan Kettering, Kristi rounded a corner and there were groups of individuals in orange shirts, just as she had seen 17 years ago, cheering her on. The experience had come full circle and she had to take a moment to relish in what she was truly a part of.

She was aware of her time, and the competitive side of her definitely reminded her of her pace, but along the way, Kristi ran into familiar faces from her time in NY, fellow teammates running for her cause, and decided this was the more important goal. She and Dan finished the race at a slower but intentional pace, side by side with friends and fellow teammates, coming together in honor of those who have run the race against cancer.

This year, Fred’s team has earned $5.7 million to fund research and treatments in fighting cancer. As Fred said, a lot of satisfaction comes with crossing the finish line—but the critical funds runners raise for cancer research makes a difference that goes far beyond the finish line. Kristi is living testament to these words, and we are so proud to have her as part of our HSAC family!

Happy Holidays!

As 2018 winds down I hope you take time to reflect back on the year - many of us focus our energy on the NEW YEAR and new accomplishments but lose sight of what we’ve already done!

Carve out some time to really reflect and be grateful for the things you’ve already accomplished. Make a list even! From the little special moments you’ve had, to the big celebrations or trips you’ve taken. It’s so

important to feel gratitude in each day we have!

Someone in my Barre class said it great, “I am lucky to be here today, I am not punishing my body for something I ate or drank, just grateful to be here and move my body!” This brings me to my simple suggestion of SELF CARE SUNDAYS. Sundays seem to be an easy day, a prep day to get ready for the week ahead.

This is a great time to pause and give yourself a little self care for your week ahead. Take a long leisurely walk, take a bath or a long shower, read a book by the fireplace, meditate, take a yoga class, snuggle with your child and read them book, try dry brushing, a facial mask….I could go on, but I think you get the idea! Life can get crazy and busy, especially this time of year. So take time for yourself, for self care, for your well-being.
