Get Trained. Spot Something. Report Your Results. Make a Difference!

Looking for a few good people…..

Help with early detection of invasive weeds & insects in

Clark County

▪ Receive training in identification and search tips

o June 14 – Weeds

o June 15 – Insects

▪ Visit local parks and public greenspaces – keep an eye out!

▪ Report positive detections

What are Invasive Species?

Introduced plants, animals and other

organisms that spread rapidly, outcompeting or

displacing natives and causing great harm to

the environment, the economy and people.

▪ Primarily spread by human activities

• Unintentionally

• Intentionally

Impacts of Invasives

▪ Pose a threat to wildlands, greenspaces, agriculture and home gardens

▪ Cause substantial economic burden on communities

▪ Eradication and control are costly and dangerous

Early detection reduces the need for pesticides, spares

the loss of tree canopy and helps protect clean water.

Which weeds are we targeting?

▪ The following three species are targeted for surveillance in 2021:

• Poison hemlock

• Tansy ragwort

• Garlic mustard

▪ These three species have been found in Clark County

▪ Each are either Class A or Class B weeds of concern

• Preventing new infestations and controlling existing infestations is the highest

priority

• Eradication of all Class A and control of Class B weeds is required by law

▪ Justin Collell, Clark County Weed Board will provide training and follow up support

Which insects are we targeting?

▪ The following insect species are targeted for monitoring in 2021:

o The emerald ash borer (EAB)

o The Asian longhorned beetle (ALB)

o The spotted lanternfly (SLF)

▪ These three species have not been found in Clark County, but it’s not a

matter of if, but WHEN

▪ Each of these are easily recognizable with some training

▪ Yolanda Inguanzo, Pest Survey Specialist, USDA, will

provide training and follow-up support
