1 Butchart gardens, near victoria years ago, our family’s cross-country road trip included a stop at the legend-ary butchart Gardens. it continues to awe as much today as it did then. big on the “Wow!” factor with its explo-sion of colour, you feel like you’ve dis-covered a piece of heaven on earth.

Spring brings the 300,000 bulbs planted in fall to life. And with the Saanich inlet so close, critters from sea otters to bald eagles are also attracted to the floral displays.

Designated a National historic Site in 2006, this must-see gem was the vision of Jennie butchart, who in 1904 fell in love with the fashionable Victorian gardens of the day and decided an abandoned limestone quarry was just the place for one of her gardening sites. Today, that old quarry is the exquisite Sunken Garden.

The Gardens remain family-owned and operated.

butchart Gardens, près de Victoria À voir une fois dans sa vie, ce domaine fleuri proclamé lieu historique national en 2006. C’est le grand coup de tête de la lady jardinière Jennie Butchart, amoureuse des parterres victoriens, qui a planté les siens en 1904 autour et dans les recoins d’une carrière de calcaire abandonnée. Celle-ci surplombe un jardin exquis appelé Sunken Garden.

Le domaine est spécialement couru au printemps, alors qu’éclatent les couleurs de 300 000 liliacées. On s’en

souvient pour toujours comme d’un vrai coin de paradis. Ses fleurs attirent même des loutres de mer, des pygar-gues à tête blanche et d’autres animaux de l’Inlet Saanich.

Les jardins appartiennent toujours aux descendants de Lady Butchart.

2 devonian Botanic gardens, edmonton A short drive from Alberta’s capital, surrounded by rolling hills, you feel the stresses of city life easily slide off you at this outdoor oasis. That’s no surprise: Canada’s most northerly botanic garden, part of the university of Alberta, is considered among the best, boasting 32 hectares of gardens with 44 hectares of ecological pre-serves, including indoor greenhouses where butterflies, succulents, and orchids flourish.

One of the crowd-pleasers is the fragrant herb garden. Visit these large green beds and the smell of the aromatic lavender and mint will immediately perk you up.

Another big plus is the stunning Patrick Seymour Alpine Garden, where rare stunted alpine trees and dwarf rho-dodendrons that normally flourish at higher elevations show off their colourful lustre. Especially beautiful is Eunomia oppositifolia, also known as ae-thionema. With their dense clusters of pink flowers, these early-spring floral gems are native to lebanon and thrive on south-facing arid slopes.

The peaceful and airy Japanese Garden is ideal for meditation. inspired by the traditional kaiyou (“strolling garden”) style, you can find hints of Alberta’s vast

geography with grassy hills, springs, and mountain-like mounds splayed between the spring blossoms.

Don’t be surprised if you see wedding parties during a weekend visit, as this is a very popular spot for nuptial photos.

Devonian botanic Gardens, Edmonton Rien de tel pour soulager le stress urbain que cette oasis nichée entre les rondeurs des collines. C’est le jardin botanique le plus septentrional du Canada, réputé comme l’un des meilleurs. Le domaine appartient à l’Université de l’Alberta. Elle en a converti 34 hectares en jardins et les 44 autres en réserves écologiques. On y trouve aussi des serres où les papillons butinent des orchidées omniprésentes.

Le public aime bien humer le jardin de plantes odorantes. Le bol d’air parfumé de lavande ou de menthe vous remet d’aplomb en un instant.

Autre source d’étonnement : le jardin alpin Patrick Seymour, où des arbres chétifs et des rhododendrons nains acclimatés resplendissent de toutes leurs couleurs. On s’émerveille spécia- lement devant les grappes denses de fleurs roses de l’Eunomia oppositifolia, ou aethionème. Cette plante à floraison hâtive vient du Liban, dont elle affec-tionne les arides flancs sud.

Le paisible et spacieux jardin-promenade japonais, ou kaiyou, appelle à la médita-tion. Les terrassements évoquent le relief albertain, ses vertes collines, ses sources et ses montagnes tout encadrées de fleurs vernales.

3 niagara Parks Commission’s floral showhouse

My parents, especially Mom, loved to while away the hours in this steamy glass greenhouse. As kids, we piled into the station wagon and headed just past Niagara Falls to spend hours inside the tropical paradise, thick with wild orchids, ferns, and palm trees. A real find, the historic property is free to browse and makes a pleasurable tonic to the final days of winter.

And it’s just as spectacular as ever. Surrounded by thick foliage, songbirds swoop above your head. Niagara’s bounty is on full display, styled in seasonal flowerbeds lush with Easter lilies, forced spring bulbs, azaleas, and the rare Schizanthus, which the gardeners hand-pollinate as the seed is not commercially available.

Daffodils are so big that the NPC has earned the title of “Daffodil Capital of North America.” The daffodil’s sis-

ter plant, the narcissus, also flowers profusely here, as do tulips. Orange Queen, blueberry ripple, and palettes of pink tulips adorn the parks.

Serre fleurie de la Commission des parcs du Niagara Ce paradis tropical foisonne d’orchidées sauvages, de fougères et de palmiers, juste à la sortie de Niagara Falls, là où commence le territoire de Commission des parcs du Niagara. C’est l’endroit idéal pour se régénérer à la fin de l’hiver. On peut y passer des heures en visite libre.

Les oiseaux chanteurs font des piqués au milieu du feuillage luxuriant. On admire la généreuse flore du Niagara côtoyant des lys de Pâques, des bulbes de printemps forcés, des azalées et le très rare schi-zanthe aux semences introuvables dans le commerce. Les jardiniers le pollinisent à la main.

Les jonquilles y sont si grandes que la Commission des parcs du Niagara a reçu le titre de « capitale nord-américaine de la jonquille ». Dans les parcs fleurissent aussi en abondance des narcisses, des astromélias et des tulipes rosées ou panachées de bleu.

4 Burlington’s royal Botanical garden

They had me at the whiff of lilacs. This floral paradise, perched between Toronto and Niagara, boasts the world’s largest lilac collection. row upon row of lilac bushes and trees will entice you to lose yourself in this wonderland.

i enjoy taking the free double-decker shuttle bus to the lilac Dell Arborete-um for these fragrant pastel beauties. Of course, tulips, peonies, and irises are also plentiful. Over by the rock Garden, an explosion of 100,000-plus tulips will surely make you smile with their bright petals.

Thanks to the vision of Thomas b. McQuesten, the city’s rocky northern part is now a green gem. back in the roaring Twenties, he purchased some farmland and created a rock garden by arranging rocks in an unsightly open pit.

There’s little doubt the spot is worthy

of the title of “Canada’s biodiversity hotspot.” The rbG reports the grounds are home to more species of native plants than anywhere else in the country.

Jardins botaniques royaux de burlington Perché entre Toronto et Niagara, ce paradis floral possède la collection de lilas la plus débordante au monde. On a envie d’errer sans fin entre les rangées de lilas de tailles variées.

Pour respirer les parfums délicats de cet arboretum Lilac Dell (ou Vallon des lilas), on doit prendre un autobus navette à deux étages gratuit. Pivoines,

iris et tulipes y fleurissent aussi à foison. Et comment ne pas sourire devant l’éclat des cent mille tulipes du Rock Garden!

C’est grâce à l’esprit visionnaire de Thomas B. McQuesten qu’un terrain rocailleux du nord de la ville est aujourd’hui un trésor de verdure. C’est lui qui, durant les années folles, a racheté des terres agricoles pour y aménager un jardin de rocaille.

On ne s’étonne pas qu’il porte le titre de « haut lieu de la biodiversité canadienne ». On y trouve en effet plus d’espèces de plantes indigènes que n’importe où ailleurs au pays.

5 Montréal Botanical garden

No doubt Montréal’s long, cold winters seem endless, but a visit to its botanical gardens will definitely cure any cabin fever. located near Olympic Park, the garden’s 22,000 species provide no end of fascination.

here at one of the world’s largest and finest gardens, crowds can travel the globe virtually through the many themed gardens. The Chinese Garden, with its Ming Dynasty-inspired pagoda, waterfalls, and signature red lanterns of different shapes and sizes, takes on a whole new look by night.

in the Japanese Garden, serenity and calm take over the senses as you stop and marvel at the sculpted bonsai trees. Native birches and maples flourish in the First Nations Garden. inside the greenhouses, crowds gather to admire hyacinths and irises in full bloom.

it’s truly extraordinary how in the 1930s, two men, brother Marie-Victorin and

horticulturalist henry Teuscher, made their dream of creating an earthly para-dise a reality by mustering unemployed men in desperate need of work and creating this botanical wonder. Canada holds it so dear that in 2008, the nation designated the garden a National his-toric Site.

Jardin botanique de MontréalQuand ils n’en peuvent plus de l’hiver, les Montréalais peuvent chasser le cafard à coup sûr en visitant leur Jardin botanique. Situé à proximité du Parc olympique, il n’a de cesse de nous charmer avec ses 22 000 espèces de fleurs!

C’est l’une des plus riches collections du monde. On la présente dans des jardins thématiques représentant divers pays. Le Jardin de Chine, par exemple, est féerique le soir quand on illumine ses cascades, sa pagode de tradition Ming et ses lanternes rouges aux formes et tailles variées.

Le Jardin japonais, lui, nous rassérène à notre insu pendant que nous étudions ses bonsaïs finement émondés. Quant au Jardin des Premières Nations, il fait hon-neur aux bouleaux et aux érables cana-diens. Les serres, enfin, sont très courues au temps des jacinthes et des iris.

Il est édifiant d’apprendre comment on a assuré un gagne-pain à des chômeurs des années 30 en les embauchant pour construire ce paradis terrestre. Il faut en remercier le frère Marie-Victorin et l’horticulteur Henry Teuscher. Le Canada est si fier de ce Jardin botanique qu’il en a fait un lieu historique national en 2008.

6 ottawa’s tulip gardens Ever since the first Canadian Tulip Festival, in 1953, these happy perennials have turned Canada’s capital into an iconic flower show. We can thank our bond with the Netherlands for that.

During the early days of the second World War, a young Princess Juliana boarded a halifax-bound ship then made her way to Government house in Ottawa, where a princess would be born on honorary Dutch soil created by the federal government. Princess Margriet Francisca would become the only royal ever born in North America. in addi-tion, the Dutch were deeply moved by Canada’s role in the liberation of the Netherlands, and offered a gift of countless precious tulips in thanks.

As a university student, the weight of long, dreary school days was lifted off my shoul-ders by a long springtime walk along the rideau Canal. Memories of Crayola-dipped tulips scribbled on the canal’s banks, clusters of the bright perennials dancing

around Dow’s lake and Parliament hill, have stuck with me over the years.

The upcoming festival will showcase brilliant hues reminiscent of a shim-mering kaleidoscope, hence this year’s theme: Kaleidoscope of Spring. Ottawa Tourism will make your visit easy: inquire about their special Tulip accom-modation packages.

Jardins de tulipes d’Ottawa Si des tulipes envahissent la capitale du Canada chaque printemps depuis le premier Festival, en 1953, c’est assuré-ment grâce à nos liens privilégiés avec les Pays-Bas.

Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en effet, le Canada a hébergé la princesse néerlandaise Juliana à Rideau Hall. Le gouvernement a même provisoirement cédé le terrain aux Pays-Bas pour que

Juliana puisse accoucher en sol hollandais de la petite princesse Margriet Francisca. Cette dernière est la seule altesse royale à avoir jamais vu le jour en Amérique du Nord. Émus de cet accueil, mais aussi du rôle qu’a joué le Canada dans la libéra-tion de leur pays, les Néerlandais nous ont offert en retour d’innombrables et précieux plants de tulipes.
