At  the  Interview

What  if  you  don’t  know  how  to  answer  a  question?

• Don’t  be  afraid  to  ask  them  to  repeat  the  question  or  rephrase  the  question  if  you  don’t  understand  it

• If  you  still  can’t  answer  the  question  directly,  answer  it  the  best  you  can  Example:  “Tell  me  a  problem  you  have  faced  in  your  life  and  how  you  resolved  it”……….  “Well,  I  can’t  think  of  any  specific  problems  right  now,  but  when  I  have  a  problem  I  usually  try  to  take  my  time  and  solve  it  myself  and  if  I  can’t  solve  it,  I  find  somebody  who  can  help.”

Last  Few  Pointers:  • Let  them  get  to  know  you.  • If  you  are  nervous  because  you  haven’t  interviewed  before-‐  let

Worksheet:  Sample  Interview  Questions   1

1. Tell  me  about  yourself.   2     See  previous  sheet   3     4  2. Why  are  you  applying  here?   5     See  previous  sheet   6     7  3. What  areas  do  you  feel  you  need  to  improve  on?  Be  honest  with  te  employer.    Don’t  be  afraid  to  identify   8

something  you’re  not  good  at;  the  most  important  thing  is  to  tell  them  how  you  are  trying  to  improve  on   9  your  weakness.   10

Example:  “  I  am  not  great  at  math,  but  my  teachers  say  I    am  improving,  and  I  am  not  afraid  to  ask  for  help   11  or  use  a  calculator.”   12

  _______________________________________________________________ 13

_______________________________________________________________ 14

_______________________________________________________________   15

16  4. Why  would  you  be  a  good  candidate  for  this  position?  Always  highlight  things  the  employer  will  want  in  a   17

good  employee  and  why  you  are  motivated  to  do  it.   18     Example:  “I  am  a  hard  worker  and  will  always  get  the  job  done  in  a  timely  manner.    I  am  not  afraid  to  ask  for   19

help  and  am  eager  to  learn  more  job  skills.”   20

_______________________________________________________________   23

24  5. What  is  your  idea  of  teamwork?  Don’t  be  afraid  to  explain  with  it  means  to  you.  A  good  definition  for   25

teamwork  is:  when  people  contribute  their  individual  strengths  to  accomplish  a  common  goal.   26     Example:  “Teamwork  is  people  getting  along  and  working  together  to  get  big  things  done.”   27

  _______________________________________________________________ 28

_______________________________________________________________ 29

_______________________________________________________________   30

31  6. What  would  a  teacher  or  past  supervisor  say  about  you?  Remember  to  be  honest  about  your  answers,  and   32

focus  on  the  positive.   33     Example:  “My  teachers  would  say  that  I  have  really  grown  in  the  past  few  years  and  that  I  complete   34

assignments  on  time,  am  respectful  to  others,  and  try  my  hardest  to  complete  my  work  correctly.”   35

7. Stress  at  the  job  can  come  in  many  forms;  most  commonly  because  of  a  heavy  workload  or  an  annoying   39  co-‐worker.  How  would  you  go  about  dealing  with  this  kind  of  stress  at  work?    Use  the  F  word  –  not  the   40  one  that  you  want  to  use  -‐  but  the  word  “FOCUS”.  Tell  the  employer  how  you  will  FOCUS  on  a  task  and  do  it   41  to  the  best  of  your  ability.    When  a  co-‐worker  is  annoying  you,  you  should  FOCUS  on  what  is  positive  at  work   42  and  block  out  negativity.   43

Example:  “When  I  am  stressed  out  I  take  a  deep  breath  and  FOCUS  on  what  I  am  doing.  I  know  that  being   44  stressed  is  only  temporary  and  I  try  to  remain  positive  and    focus  on  doing  my  job  as  bets  as  I  can.”   45

49  8. What  is  your  idea  of  customer  service?  Remember  that  making  sure  the  customer  is  happy  is  a  primary   50

function  of  many  jobs   51     Example:  “I  think  customer  service  is  always  being  friendly,  answering  any  questions  the  customer  might   52

have,  and  if  I  don’t  know  the  answer,  finding  someone  who  does.”   53

57  9. Describe  a  difficult  school  /  work  situation  and  how  you  overcame  it.  Remember  an  employer  asks  this   58

question  not  to  judge  you,  but  to  see  you  deal  with  conflict  or  overcome  difficult  situations.  Don’t  go  into   59  too  much  detail  or  get  emotionally  involved,  just  state  the  facts  and  focus  on  positive  ways  you  overcame   60  the  situation.   61

Example:  “My  math  teacher  was  offering  an  after  school  class  for  anyone  wanting  extra  help  on  their   62  homework  but  it  was  at  the  same  time  as  my  cross  country  practice.    I  needed  the  help  with  my  homework  to   63  keep  my  grades  up,  but  I  didn’t  want  to  let  my  team  down.    I  talked  to  my  coach  and  my  teacher  and  we   64  worked  out  a  time  that  worked  for  everyone.”   65

  _______________________________________________________________   69

70  10. What  do  you  think  it  takes  to  be  successful  in  a  job?    Remember  the  5  most  important  traits  for  an  entry   71

level  position.  If  you  have  researched  the  company,  make  sure  you  bring  some  specific  company  values  into   72  your  reason.   73

Example:  “I  believe  you  need  to  be  a  team  player,  dependable,  and  always  work  hard.  I  also  think  it  is   74  important  to  always  have  a  positive  attitude  and  give  great  customer  service.”   75

what  they  are  looking  for  and  if  you  possess  those  qualities  you  can   92

tell  them  right  away.   93

Example:    Employer:  “Well  we  are  looking  for  somebody  who  is   94

responsible,  willing  to  learn,  and  is  always  going  to  show  up.     95

Interviewee:  “Well,  I  just  want  you  to  know  I  am  always  willing  to   96

learn  new  things  and  I  am  very  dependable”   97
