• Explore the structures, content and assessment in the new Pearson BTEC Level 3 Nationals and how this impacts on your existing curriculum.
• Discuss approaches to teaching and learning.
• Plan curriculum delivery using a range of different approaches.
• Devise an employer engagement strategy that meets requirements.
• Explore the new QA Model and how to plan for its requirements
• Have an opportunity to network with other practitioners.
Why make changes?
• Reforms to 16-19 qualifications and performance tables
• Introduction of Tech Level and Applied General
qualifications
• Statutory inclusion of external assessment in all Tech Level qualifications NOT just BTEC’s
• Statutory reduction to the number of retakes for the exam (Unit 1)

What has changed?
1. Programme restructured to remove 30hr units (so Units renamed but total content remains the same)
2. External task(s) which is set and marked by Pearson
3. Retake now allowed for external task
4. Compensation rules introduced to recognise learner achievement more fairly
5. Resubmission deadline lengthened to 15 days for internal assessment
6. External exam has been restructured to simplify it and make it more accessible to learners

Unit 2: Development of Children’s Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills
How long: 6 hours (over two weeks)
Creating the task: Material supplied at beginning of the task time.
Output: A report recommending improvements to an early years setting’s speech, communication, language, literacy and numeracy.
Unit 4: Research Project
How long: 24 hours research (over six weeks), 3 hours write up (non-continuous).
Creating the task: Research article and instructions supplied at the beginning of the six week research period.
Output: Workbook with set questions to structure the answers supplied at beginning of three hour write-up period.

• The Command Word Glossary guides you and your students the specific expectations of each command word used within questions in the assessment.
• The Glossary document defines each command word - their meaning is reflected in how we’ve structured the corresponding mark schemes.
• It is a resource you can use for exam preparation it supports students by ensuring consistency and clarity in the assessment questions, so students know how to respond.

Analyse Examine in detail in order to discover the meaning or essential
features of a theme, topic or situation
Break something down into its component parts/factors,
considering each methodically and in detail
Examine how the factors/parts are related and how each one
contribute to the topic/situation
Define Provide the meaning of something, usually a term. May
sometimes be replaced by ‘What (is the meaning of/is meant
by…)
Describe Provide a factual account of something e.g. a process.
Statements in the response need to be linked to form a logical
sequence but do not need to include a justification or reason.
Discuss • Establish the issue/situation/problem
• Explore all aspects/sides of an issue/situation/argument

Evaluate • Measure the value or success of something

identified. The answer must contain some element of expansion,
normally reasoning/justification.

All of these command words are really synonyms. They generally all
require recall of one or more pieces of information.
Identify Requires (key) information to be selected from a given
stimulus/resource.
