WHY DO WE HAVE FUNERALS ANYWAY?

The first reaction when someone thinksabout funerals is often negative. Anextremely unpleasant task done only outof a sense of duty.

But when you think about it, funeralsmake perfect sense.

Funerals help synchronize the feelingsof survivors. They bring your family andfriends together, so everyone may share

strength and support. Reflect, reaffirm, even celebrate your relationship withthe deceased. Confirming the reality ofdeath with a chance to say “good bye.”Renew religious connections in somecases. And help appreciate the gift oflife.

Why do we have funerals?

Because during traumatic times, it’s justwhat everyone needs.

THE PEOPLE THAT HELP YOU GET

THROUGH.

When someone dies, things tend tobecome a disorienting haze. And you'llneed help to get through.

The best people to turn to during timeslike these are your funeral director andyour clergyperson.

Chances are you already knowclergypeople of some kind. They willnot only help you with some of thefuneral details, but offer spiritualguidance of a kind that no one else canoffer.

There is some chance you don’t know afuneral director. If you don’t, get toknow one. Call and make anappointment. They are the people whowill help you most during these times.

Whatever you do, make sure you gethelp. Make sure you let your family andfriends give you emotional support tSome people make the mistake ofpushing away those closest to them.

Don’t try to do this alone.

THERE’S A WAY TO A WILL.

Why make a will?

If you care about your loved ones, it’sabsolutely essential.

Without a legal will, you’ll leave behindconflict and confusion among yourfamily and friends during an emotionaltime. It will be difficult for survivors toclaim their rightful inheritance after yourdeath. Not to mention the delays andcosts in court, and having your propertydivided by strangers.

To simplify matters, develop a legal will. You may also want a Living Will and aDurable Power of Attorney for healthcare. These two documents will expressyour wishes, if you are unable to makedecisions regarding your own medicalcare.

There is only one foolproof way to awill. A lawyer. There are many effectivebooks, kits, even computer programsabout the subject. They are greatreferences. But if you want apersonalized will, you need a lawyer.

HELPING A FRIEND GET THROUGH.

Someone who helps a friend or familymember get over the death of a lovedone is a friend indeed.

Almost everyone has the impulse tohelp. But many people don't know how. Here are some tips.

• Get in touch as soon as possible. Callyour friend. Hearing from peoplehelps. If you’re searching forsomething to say, start with “I’m sosorry,” and offer to help in any way.

Page 11: Getting Through - Amazon Web Services

• Be yourself. Simple honest words arebetter than cliches such as: “He is outof his pain.” “You’re young enough tohave another child.” “It was God’swill.”

• Listen and observe. Being a goodlistener is the best thing you can do.Don’t force conversation, but if yourfriend feels like talking, be there. Donot criticize, try to change the subjector probe for details about the death.Look for others who may needsupport.

• Offer to make calls. Sometimes, it getsrepetitive and difficult for your friendto relive the experience over and overagain.

• Lend a hand with everyday tasks.Answer the phone. Greet visitors.Help with shopping or transportation.Prepare a meal. Care for the childrenor grandchildren.

• Send a thoughtful note. Keep itsimple. Remind the survivor of apleasant time you once shared. Afrom-the-heart letter will become acherished keepsake.

AFTER THE FUNERAL

• Keep in touch with your friend. Makea point to call regularly, to visit orinvite your friend to do things withyou.

• Help your friend return to outsideactivities. People are different; someare ready soon, some take a longtime.

• Let your friend know that you will beavailable for as long as needed.

Understand that healing doesn’thappen overnight. Recovery can takeyears.

• Be a “sounding board” for thebereaved person. Also you might referyour friend to a local bereavementsupport group.

HELPING A CHILD GET THROUGH.

Chances are, when someone dies, thereare children involved.

They may be young children of thedeceased person, grandchildren, niecesand nephews, or the children of friends.

Here are some simple guidelines whendealing with children at the time of adeath or a funeral:

• Tell them what happened. Do not tryto shield them from the fact of death. They usually know all that ishappening, even if you don’t tellthem. If you are dishonest with them, the result is a confused child who nolonger trusts you. And trust is difficultto regain.

• Be ready for the questions. They willask you some difficult ones. Whateveryou do, don’t “make up” answers.Keep all answers simple and direct. Ifyou don’t know an answer, it is fineto say, “I do not know, but I will tryto find out.”

• Ask them what they think. Instead oftrying to answer a particularly toughquestion, ask them about theirthoughts on the matter. They willoften reveal the fear or fantasy behindthe question.

Page 12: Getting Through - Amazon Web Services

• Some common questions: Did I causethe death? Will I die of the samecause/illness? Will I die when I reachthe same age? Will I be punished forthinking about hurting or killingpeople?

• Reassure them. Children need toknow that they will be cared for asalways.

• Encourage them to go to the funeral. If parents cannot devote sufficienttime or attention to their childrenbecause of their own involvement ortheir own grief, a friend’s assistancecan help immeasurably.

• Explain what happens at funerals. Avisit to the funeral home in advanceof the funeral service providesopportunity to sense what ishappening and to ask questions.Funeral directors can answerchildren’s questions too.

• Get a book. There are severalexcellent books designed to helpparents explain death to children.Funeral directors have a wide variety,so do public libraries.

WHAT IS A GRAVE VAULT?

(And why you should choose a metalone.)

The function of a grave vault is toprotect the casket and its contents.

There are two common types of gravevaults. Metal and concrete. As theillustrations show, box-shaped porousconcrete vaults allow the casket to beexposed to water.

Clark Grave Vaults are made of non-porous metals, and their dome-shapeddesign allows the air pressure inside thevault to force the water below casketlevel. Picture a submerged, invertedglass in which the air keeps water fromcoming up inside.

When it comes to protection and peaceof mind, metal is better.

And Clark makes metal grave vaultsbetter than anyone else.

The Clark design uses the same principleas the glass inverted in water.

Box-shaped concrete enclosure exposescasket to water.

Clark Grave Vaults are engineered to keep the casket dry.
