cover profile

Born in Karachi, Ghansham Demla was 12 years old when he, along with his mother and brother, were forced to leave Pakistan due to the Partition in 1947. They boarded an Australian cargo ship which was coming to Mumbai (then Bombay) for repairs. They stayed in a dharmshala in Kalbadevi, Mumbai before moving to Pune and then to Delhi before coming back to Mumbai.

Ghansham Dembla studied at St. Xavier ’s High School which was the best school in Mumbai at that time. He then joined St. Xavier ’s College and acquired his Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1957. He then proceeded to do a post graduation in engineering from London University.

During his stay in London, he worked with the English Electric Company and was a part of the team which designed the electricals of Durgapur Steel Plant. The plant was set up in 1957 with the help of the United Kingdom.

On his return to Mumbai, Ghansham Dembla started Precision Rubber Industries Pvt. Ltd. to manufacture textile spinning components which were earlier imported. Today, the company is the largest manufacturer of these products in the

country, and exports the products to more than 35 countries across the globe.

Ghansham Dembla joined Rotary in 1974 as a Founding Member of the Rotary Club of Bombay Central which was created by Bombay Mid-Town. He served as the President of the Rotary Club of Bombay Central for the year 1979-80. During his term, all the Club’s members became either Paul Harris Fellows or sustaining members. Ghansham Dembla was the District Conference Secretary in 1985-86 when Prabhakar Store was the Governor of the District.

When Ajit Kamlani was the President of Bombay Mid-Town, he invited Ghansham Dembla to join the current Club. During late Mithu Malani’s presidentship of Bombay Mid-Town, Ghansham Dembla was the Chairman of the Paul Harris Foundation and received an award for the highest contribution collected.

Ghansham Dembla has applied the principles of Rotary to his business and has benefited from the same. He married Rovina in 1964. They have two sons – Bhenoy, who is currently based in Chicago and Diven, who lives in Mumbai.

Ghansham Dembla: A Gentleman Rotarian

The Board of Directors and members of the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town wish to appreciate the enlightened leadership of Rtn R. P. Anand as President during the Rotary Year 2015-16. Strong growth took place in every sphere of Rotary activity, be it Club service, vocational service, community service, international service, etc. His support, guidance and encouragement went a long way to inspire the Directors, Committee Chairmen, and all the Rotarians to execute the various events and projects in an exemplary manner.

Even though Pres. R. P. Anand is 83 years young, he hides his age by sheer agility. He did not slacken his pace and spent considerable time visiting and supporting each and every project, packing many hours in a day entirely devoted to Rotary matters. He portrays an unadulterated rustic charm, which describes our loving President so accurately. He is a good example of how commitment and hard work pay off.

R. P. Anand deserves to be proud of his achievement – his determination to reach his goal has been admirable. During his tenure, over `40 lakhs were raised to fund the Club’s community projects without a fund raising programme.

We welcome Rtn Sucharita Hegde as the President for year 2016-2017. We are sure that the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town will continue to expand and grow under her leadership.

Start planning for the TRF centennialWhen incoming district governors gathered in San Diego for the International Assembly in January, they began preparing for The Rotary Foundation’s year of centennial celebrations in 2016–17.

The district governors-elect also got a sneak peak of Doing Good in the World, a behind-the-scenes look at the Foundation’s rich history, from founder Arch Klumph’s initial proposal at the 1917 Rotary Convention up to the latest humanitarian grants. Governors received complimentary copies of the book, and author David C Forward, Governor of District 7500 (New Jersey, USA), addressed the gathering and signed copies.

“I have circled the globe to research, write and speak about the story of Rotary in action, and I have never been as proud to be a Rotarian as I am today,” Forward said. “This is something I can give to a town’s Mayor to help him or her understand the value of having a Rotary club in the community, or new members to help them become more engaged, motivated, generous Rotarians.”

Now is the time to start planning your club or district’s centennial celebration. In addition to spreading the word about the book, now for sale at shop.rotary.org, you have lots of ways to let your members know about the Foundation:

International Youth Exchange to Germany, 2016

news

What we learn with pleasure, we never forget.— Alfred Mercier

Eleven of us from Lala Lajpatrai College, HR College and Jai Hind College were selected to be a part of an International Youth Exchange Program organised by Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town and Rotary Club Nidda, Germany. Though we had anticipated that the trip to Germany would be great, it turned out to be beyond our imagination. The journey for us started from the day we got selected for the Exchange Program. Not only the trip but the preparation too was a learning experience.

We reached Frankfurt on 7th May to a warm and loving welcome by our host families. Thanks to Facebook and Whatsapp, we already knew our host sisters and brothers so there were lots of hugs and laughter. Deutschland is a beautiful country with landscapes almost impossible to encounter in Mumbai. Our host families were scattered around in the Hessen region which is about an hour away from Frankfurt. None of us had experienced the countryside before. The place, unlike Mumbai, was sparsely populated. It had fresh air and lush green surroundings.

During the trip, we were taken to various manufacturing units where we learnt about the German system of operation and administration. The Germans are perfectionists and we were very impressed with their manner of functioning. We

visited the OVAG Wasserwerks which is a water supply company for Frankfurt, the vintage car hall of Messrs Bender, the REWE Group plant, the Hessian Parliament, the Glatfelter paper factory and other places. Some of us had the chance to ride in the classic cars owned by Mr. Stadler. We also received personalised T-shirts as souvenirs from Mr. Klaus Heimann at his printing unit.

This trip gave us the privilege to meet Mr. Rainer Wengorsch, the Honourable Mayor of Hungen and Mr. Raveesh Kumar, Consul General of India in Frankfurt. The interaction with these personalities was very inspiring.

At the welcome meeting organised by Rotary Club Nidda on 11th May, we presented a dance performance. Apart from Rotarians and dignitaries, all our host families with their relatives and friends were present at the function. The evening started off with a speech by Mr. Manfred Knoll and Mr. Raveesh Kumar. The Indian and German exchange students introduced themselves. We made a presentation on the diversity of India. This included the different languages, cuisines, dances, famous Bollywood personalities and landmarks in India. We also included a short quiz to make the environment interactive. Our dance performance reflected a mix of Bollywood and classical dance. This was followed by a lavish dinner featuring traditional German cuisine. The night ended with our host families joining us on the stage and dancing to Bollywood numbers.

On 20th May, we cooked an elaborate Indian meal for our host families. The menu included lassi, tea, nimbu pani, chicken nuggets with dip, sev puri, aloo tikki, vegetable makhanwala, biryani, chhole, thepla, rava sevai and gulab jamun. The Germans were overwhelmed with the flavours of Indian cuisine especially since most of them tasted it for the first time. We were honoured with a farewell dinner held on 26th May. Each student made a heartfelt speech for his/herhostfamily.Followingthetraditionoftheearlier years, we clicked a group picture and bid goodbye to our families.

The biggest reason why this has been the best trip so far is because we didn’t visit the place as a tourist but lived there as the Germans themselves. For this, we are exceedingly thankful to each and every individual who made this trip possible, especially members of the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town. It was a journey filled with growth and unforgettable memories. This trip made all of us more independent and self-sufficient and taught us the practicality of life. We also made lifelong bonds with our host sisters and brothers which we will never forget. A part of us will always remain in Germany. We now look forward to welcoming our German sisters and brothers here in Mumbai in October and ensuring that they get a taste of the legendary Indian hospitality.

No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks.— James Allen.
