Bake sale fundraiser to help young family Pharmasave staff & members of the community are coming together and having a bake sale February 21, with all proceeds going to a young woman and mother in our community who has lost her partner recently. We are hoping to help her out as she has 4 children and is left with a lot of expenses. Everyone needs time to grieve and maybe the mon- ey can help her take each day at a time. Plane crash update The Transportation Safety Board says it has assessed information gathered fol- lowing a serious plane crash in Merritt, and will not be investigating further. The board was contacted Feb. 10 when a crashed plane was found on the tarmac of the Merritt airport shortly after midnight. RCMP were responding to a report of a missing person and an officer was checking the airport when the wreckage of the single-seat aircraft was found. The pilot, a man in his 60s who was the subject of the search, was trapped inside and was treated for serious injuries after being cut free. The City of Merritt maintains the air- port and following the crash officials said they believed it happened after dusk on Monday but a report was not received for several hours. They said the man had just moved to Merritt from out-of-province and was transferring his plane to the airport when it went down. —The Canadian Press, CHNL Homeless count To better understand local issues to help municipalities and local organizations best support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, government is conducting a 2nd provincial homeless count. The Province is partnering with the Homelessness Services Association of BC (HSABC) & BC Housing to complete 16 community counts throughout the prov- ince in March & April — including Mer- ritt. Government has provided $900,000 to support the community counts, while an additional 10 communities have fed- eral and independent funding. Data from the counts will provide a better understanding of homelessness in BC. The information will be used to improve supports and services, measure progress in addressing homelessness and increase public awareness. In Merritt, the count will be held on March 11, and volunteers are needed. Old Time Fiddlers At last weekend’s Old Time Fiddlers’ general meeting, the group unanimously approved to hold an open house event, an introduction to the fiddle and guitar. If there’s enough interest, the group plan to hold more training workshops in future — where you can learn to play, or if you already play, to play even better.
