How to Drink Wine

The Easiest Way to Learn What You Like

With its conversational tone, playful maps, and witty illustrations, this book is a brand-new kind of wine resource.

You’ve probably heard of Riesling. You probably hate it. You probably know someone who tells you that you don’t “get it” even though the only reason they do “get it” is because they watched the Somm documentaries on Netflix.

That’s not to say that we don’t like Riesling. We do. Sometimes. Kind of. It can be delicious and in some scenarios, it’s the exact right wine to drink. For example, when you’re eating spicy foods or trying to drink all day and need something lower in alcohol.

Riesling is a grape grown mostly in Germany and Austria, though you can find it being made in other places as well, most notably Australia and New York. Some people say that Australian Rieslings smell like tennis balls. They actually kind of do. The rest smell like white peaches and perfume and taste like tart citrus and honey. How much honey will depend on the sweetness, and that can vary greatly. This grape can be made into sweet dessert wines that look like maple syrup, and it can also be so tart that you’d think you just bit into a lemon as though it was an apple.

If you like it, here’s whyYou like wines to be very cold and refreshing. You like the dry versions because they taste like Sour Patch Kids. You like the sweet versions because they taste like that pineapple syrup you pour over a sundae. You like the idea of people thinking you’re a wine nerd.

How To Seem Like You Can Navigate A Wine List Even Though You Definitely Can’t

We’ve all been there. You’re at dinner with someone you hope will find you appealing as a human being, whether it be to breed with, to do business with, or just to share stories about cats with. Somehow, the wine list ends up in your hands and you either blindly choose something that you proceed to pronounce as “Cabinet Frank,” or you freeze up completely. Not ideal.

Don’t worry. We can help without arming you with a 2,000 page textbook about wine. All you have to do is follow these 8 simple steps.

person will be glad you told them regardless of your budget.

3.Decide on a general category: red, white, sparkling, rosé, etc. Do not, under any circumstance, say “white zinfandel.” That isn’t wine, and it should only exist in grocery stores and trash cans.

4.Pick a country or large wine producing region. If you are unsure, play it safe and say France or California for the sake of simplicity and because you’ll find bottles from both on almost every list. Italy is safe too, but follow up questions may be tough to answer because there are so many grapes and regions there.

1.Find someone who knows the list. If there’s a wine list in your hand, it’s because someone in that restaurant who chose the wines that are on it. That may be a sommelier, a wine director, or some other wine professional. It could also be the owner or a manager who knows what he or she is talking about. If no one is around who knows what

they’re talking about, it probably doesn’t matter what you choose from that list. Close your eyes and point at something. Or maybe have a beer instead.

2.Start with how much you want to spend. And be direct, even if it’s $40. Good restaurants take pride in having good value on their list, and the sommelier/wine

5.Choose either a style or a grape varietal. Style = light, medium, full bodied. Grape varietal = Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, etc.

6.Be confident. Even if you have no idea what you’re saying.

7.Ask for input. Leaving it open ended allows for the wine person to help guide you.

8.Never pronounce a “t.” Just to be safe.

Yayoi Kusama sits painting polka dots, wearing a dress with printed

polka dots, in a studio covered in polka-dotted canvases. Kusama has

become iconic for her dots, but they are more than just a pattern for

her. She has suffered from anxiety attacks and hallucinations her whole

life; these often involve the world turning into dots that she becomes

engulfed in. She has turned her illness into inspiration.

Kusama was born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan. As a child, she was

always drawing and wanted to become a professional artist. Her mother

discouraged Kusama from pursuing art and would even tear up her

drawings. But in 1948, Kusama managed to convince her parents to let

her study painting in Kyoto. In 1957 she moved to the United States for

the freedom to follow her dreams.

While living as a struggling artist in New York, Kusama began to

paint her famous Infinity Nets series. As seen in the painting No. F

(1959), these paintings are made of seemingly endless circles that cover

the entire canvas. At the time, pop artists such as Andy Warhol were

dominating the American art scene. Kusama creations fit right in with

this bright and fun pop art, but hers were more personal. Throughout

the 1960s, Kusama created “happenings” (which were like art parties),

where she would cover canvases, people, and even entire rooms with

painted polka dots. In 1963, she began creating her Infinity Mirrored

Rooms, which featured wall-to-wall mirrored rooms that she filled with

polka-dotted objects or hanging lights. The mirrors reflected endlessly

into each other, “obliterating” the viewer’s sense of space. Her work was

featured at major galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art.

In 1973, Kusama’s mental health continued to decline, and she

moved back to Japan. She continued to work through her challenges,

and in 1977, chose to reside in a psychiatric hospital—where she

continues to live today—so she could properly manage her mental

health. Kusama purchased a nearby studio to create her art. For her,

artwork is medicine: “I fight pain, anxiety, and fear every day, and

the only method I have found that relieves my illness is to keep

creating art.”

In 1837, Harriet Powers was born into slavery near Athens, Georgia.

Along with the many brutal practices of slavery, teaching slaves to

read was against the law. But Harriet, like many of the women before

her, would use her artistry to create storytelling quilts to share

legends, Bible stories, and astronomical events. After the Civil War, in

1865, slavery was made illegal by the Thirteenth Amendment to the US

Constitution. At the age of twenty-eight, Harriet Powers was finally

free, and she and her family managed to own some land and a home.

In 1886, Harriet displayed her now-famous Bible Quilt at the Cotton

Fair in Athens, Georgia. The quilt captured the eye of white art teacher

Jennie Smith, who offered to purchase it on the spot for $10 (which

would be more than $240 today). Harriet could not bear to part with

her precious quilt and declined to sell it.

In 1865 and 1866, the Black Codes were enacted in the South

to strip away the rights of newly freed slaves and to ensure that

plantations continued to have nearly free labor. The South was

struggling economically after the war. Times became hard for Harriet

and her family and they had to sell off parts of their land. Four years

after the Cotton Fair in Georgia, and after discussing it with her family,

Harriet decided to sell her precious Bible Quilt. She sold it to Jennie

Smith for $5 but made sure that Jennie wrote down a description of

the story each square told so that her quilt’s meaning would remain.

This sale of her work helped Harriet’s family keep their home.

Little is known about Harriet’s quilting career, but there is record

of her being hired to create several more quilts. She died in 1910 at

the age of seventy-two. Today, two of her quilts still survive in the

collections of major museums. Harriet Powers did not obtain wealth or

fame with her artwork during her lifetime, but the beauty of her quilts

has allowed them to endure for over 130 years. Her work shares an

aspect of the private lives, hopes, dreams, and strength of the people

who survived slavery and gives visibility to African American Southern

life during the Reconstruction era.

T H O M A S ˜ CU S H I N G is a New York City–based writer, entrepreneur, and professional packager.

A SATELLITE is simply an object that orbits the Earth. Since we invented rockets, people from many different countries have launched thousands of satellites into space, of all shapes and sizes.

L AIK A was the first animal to make a full orbit of the Earth. A stray dog rescued from the streets of Moscow, she rocketedto fame aboard a Soviet spaceship.

was the first animal to make a full orbit of the Earth. A stray dog rescued from the streets

she rocketedto fame aboard a Soviet spaceship.

At many times the mass of our Sun, the SUPERGIANT stars burn off their fuel much quicker and end their lives in spectacular fashion, with a humongous explosion called a SUPERNOVA .In a few hours, a supernova releases more energy than our Sun will in its entire lifetime and shines as brightly as an entire galaxy! This supernova explosion leaves behind a giant cloud of debris, which is called a NEBUL A .

hello,SpaceCadets!

APOLLO 11 was the first space mission that resulted in humans landing on the moon. Its U.S. crew consisted of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins.

A GAL A X Y is a collection of billions of stars, swirling around like a giantspace whirlpool. Our galaxy is called the Milky Way. It contains more stars than anyone could count in a lifetime and spins so slowly that it takes 225 million years tocomplete a full cycle!

TELESCOPES allow us to see distant objects better or even light waves our eyes can’t detect, allowing us to learn more about space.

The KUIPER BELT is on the edge of the solar system, where huge icy rocks hang out because they are too far away to be pulled in by the Sun’s gravity. Occasionally, one of these rocks gets a slight nudge that sends it toppling toward the center of the solar system, like a big boulder rolling down a hill.

As these COME TS approach the Sun, the heat blasts ice off of them, leaving a huge icy tail trailing behind.

PLUTO used to be considered the furthest planet away in our solar system, which is a dwarf planet that lies beyond Neptune in an area called the Kuiper belt. Recently, scientists decided that it was no longer a planet, because there are other objects in the Kuiper belt that are the same size or bigger than Pluto.

THE MAGELL AN was the first space probe to see below the thick atmosphere of Venus back in 1990 and used radar (just like submarines). It saw a surface covered in volcanoes and lava plains.

JUPITER This planet is a gas giant so massive that all of the other planets, moons, and asteroids in the solar system only make up half of its mass.

Sometimes, when the orbits of the Sun and the Moon line up just right, the Moon will float in front of the Sun, completely covering it and casting a shadow onto the Earth. This is called a SOL AR ECLIPSE . A LUNAR ECLIPSEis when the Earth’s shadow moves across the Moon. In this case, we would see a bright Moon disappear from the sky, only to reappear several hours later.

SPACE SUITS have changed a lot since the bulky suits that the astronauts wore on the Apollo missions. It is very difficult to make a good space suit, because it needs to be very strong to protect the wearer, but also flexible enough so that they can move about and perform delicate tasks like fixing spaceships.

The biggest explosions in the Universe come from the biggest stars: the HYPERGIANTS!At more than a thousand times the mass of the Sun, they blow up in an even bigger explosion called a HYPERNOVA . The core of a hypergiant collapses so hard and fast that it rips a hole in space and time, creating a BL ACK HOLE . A black hole has such strong gravity that not even light can escape!

NA SA CURIOSIT Y ROVER This car-sized rover drives around the Martian taking photos and soil and rock samples helping us learn that Mars had the conditions to harbor life billions of years ago.

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT OUTER SPACE? Apart from planets and

moons, there are many other things flying

about in our solar system.

It’s time to space out. Once you’ve finished piecing the puzzle together, see how many space elements you can find in the puzzle, using this glossary as your guide. Learn more about each elementwith the definition provided.

ASTRONAUT/COSMONAUTA person trained by a space agency who flies in space.

THE MOON Our moon is the only celestial body on which humans have landed. It takes the moon 27 days, or almost a month, to orbit around the Earth.

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION From Earth, the ISS looks like the brightest star in the night sky and orbits the Earth 15.7 times each day.

HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE is a telescope that orbits the Earth and takes amazing pictures of distant objects in space. The most famous optical telescope, it has seen the furthest into the depths of space, to galaxies on the edge of the Universe.

SPUTNIK was the first satellite to orbit the Earth and was launched by the Soviets in 1957. It was a very simple spacecraft containing a battery, a thermometer, and a radio transmitter.

SPACE SHUT TLE NASA designed this reusable spaceship to launch into orbit like a rocket, then fly back down to Earth like an airplane. The space shuttle went on a total of 135 missions between 1981 and 2011.

E ARTH is our home in the Universe. It is the perfect distance from the Sun with a temperature that allows life to flourish. Scientists call this “the Goldilocks zone”; it’s not too hot, nor too cold, but just right.

MARS is a dry and desolate planet that is covered in reddish dirt, with a very thin atmosphere surrounding it. Because of its small size, it slowly lost its internal heat, causing volcanoes and lakes to freeze over.

THE SUN is the star of our solar system that gives light and heat to us all on Earth. Just like all stars, the Sun is made of super-hot gases, mostly 74% hydrogen and 25% helium.

VENUS is a planet that’s like Earth’s evil twin. Although very similar in weight and size to our planet, an incredible 860 degrees Fahrenheit.

CONSTELL ATIONS aregroups of stars in the sky that people in ancient times joined together into pictures—just like a dot-to-dot drawing.

After the supernova explosion, the core of the star collapses into a super-dense body known as a NEUTRON STAR. It is so dense that a mere sugar cube-sized piece of a neutron star would weigh as much as Mount Everest!

MERCURY is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest planet in the solar system, only slightly larger than our Moon.

NEP TUNE This is the furthest planet from the Sun and the last massive object before the depths of interstellar space.

UR ANUS is a gas planet, that spins on its side! Uranus has rings, but they are tricky to see as they are made of dark bits of rock and dust.

SATURN Another gas giant similar to Jupiter, Saturn is mostly made of hydrogen and helium, and famous for its beautiful rings of ice encircling it.

CONSTELL ATIONS aregroups of stars in the sky that people in ancient times joined together into pictures—just like a dot-to-dot drawing.

In billions of years, when the Sun, which is a YELLOW STAR, finally uses up all its fuel, it will expand into a BIG RED GIANT and then collapse under its own weight into a WHITE DWARF.This hot, dense body, the size of the Earth, will no longer fuse atoms together, and will slowly cool down as it loses its heat to space.
