Gifted and Talented Program

Van Derveer Elementary School: Grades K-5

Implementation Guidelines

In order to fulfill state guidelines regarding the enrichment of pupils identified as gifted and talented and to further address the specific interests and talents of all pupils in kindergarten through grade 5, Gifted and Talented modules of study aligned to the existing curriculum in all areas of concentration have been created and adopted by the Somerville Board of Education. One module per marking period is now available for use by classroom teachers and one additional module per marking period will be created yearly. These modules will be catalogued to be available for use by all classroom teachers. The modules will be implemented as follows:

Identified pupils will be engaged in the higher-level enrichment activities: Gifted and Talented modules of study.

A minimum of one module per marking period will be presented to pupils for their enrichment. More modules may be implemented at teacher discretion.

All pupils will be presented with the opportunity to complete one (or more) of the suggested activities.

Participation by all pupils is voluntary and no punitive measures may be applied for lack of participation.

Work on the activities may take place during class, before or after school, or at home.

Individual grade-level teachers may determine if and how the module activities will be assessed.
