Nintendo WiiIt was the first motion-sens-

ing console out of the gate backin 2006, and Nintendo’s Wii stillcovers the broadest demo-graphic in sales. In addition tothe Wii Remote and Nunchukcontrollers, the system offers theWii Zapper for crossbow andshooting games, the Wii Wheelfor driving games and the WiiBalance Board for fitnessgames. The experience of classicgames like Super Mario Broth-ers and Tetris becomes com-plete, interactive immersion. And when gamers tire out fromall the movement, they can kickback and watch a movie or TVshow streamed from Netflix –subscription required, of course.

The Wii Bundle retails for$199.99 and comes with the con-sole and two games: Wii Sportsand Wii Sports Resort.

Back in BlackThat white Xbox 360 coupled with the new black Kinect sen-

sor may look a bit odd on the media console. Those who wouldrather keep it monochromatic and stylish can take their gam-ing consoles back to black with the new Xbox 360 model or optfor the new Wii bundle.

The new Xbox is thinner, includes more ports and storageand runs more quietly than the older model, all at the sameprice. The newer model includes touch-sensitive power and ejectbuttons and a more angularly designed controller, which moreclosely matches the new system’s design. Another update is theKinect-specific connector, which is a more powerful USB port;older Xbox 360s require a separate power supply for the Kinect.

The Nintendo Wii now is available in black and comes withthe addition of Wii Sports and the MotionPlus enhancement de-vice for the Wii Remote at the same price of the previous bun-dle.

Video-gaming couch po-tatoes are so yester-year. In 2010, gamers

must get on their feet to conquerfeats in seventh-generation gam-ing systems. Two new consolesdebuted this year with action-packed adventures for all ages toenjoy. Gift-givers, compare specsbelow to decide which gamingsystem will help loved-onesmake all the right moves.

PlayStation MovePerhaps “Move” is short for

“move over.” The new Sony game

controller for PlayStation 3 hascarved out a space in the motion-control gaming world just in timefor the holiday season. Armedwith the motion-sensing con-troller, gamers will explore high-definition worlds powered byhigh-def Blu-ray media. The va-riety of games includes dance, sports, family fun and action. For those games requiring nav-igation through on-screen char-acters, gamers may opt to trythe new navigation controller’sanalog stick in place of the D-pad of the PS3 game controller.

Whether gamers are pan-tomiming a golf swing or kung-fu kick, the PlayStation EyeUSB Camera captures theirevery move. Built-in vibrations

surge through the motion-sens-ing controller and help gamersfeel like they’re in another world.Up to four motion controllers canbe connected to the system atonce, so there’s room for friendsand family to join in on the expe-rience.

Kinect for Xbox 360Gamers and their limbs are

the motion controllers in Mi-crosoft’s new Kinect for Xbox360. The Kinect sensor, whichfeatures an RGB camera anddepth sensor and microphone, has full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition and voice capa-bilities.

There’s no need to memorizecommands like you do in hand-held gaming. “You simply step infront of the sensor and Kinectsees you move, hears your voiceand recognizes your face,” saysMike Delman, corporate vicepresident of Global Marketingfor the Interactive Entertain-ment Business. Clothing or fur-niture in the room won’t affectgame play. Motion-game playerscan join the Zumba party, go on aKinect adventure in outer spaceand even take a joy ride. How-ever, as imagination takes flight, they should be careful not to tripover that ottoman in the livingroom.

At first glance, youwouldn’t think there’smuch to talk about

with headphones. One end intoyour music player, the other intothe ear, right? Well, not quite. Ifyou have frequent travelers, teens or music maniacs on yourholiday shopping list, you canamp up their audio experiencewith some higher-tech head-phones than what they’ll getpackaged with their iPod.

You can break down the head-phone universe into three basicgroups. Ear buds are the mostcommon form of headphone, theones you’ll get free with your dig-ital music player. They’re light-weight, low-cost and fairlyunobtrusive, but they aren’t al-ways up to the job of providingthe best sound quality. A variantof the ear bud, the in-ear head-phone, often delivers superiorsound quality because they’re in-serted deeper into the ear canal. These headphones are oftencoated with a soft fabric or re-movable rubber sleeve that youcan swap out as it ages.

An over-the-ear headphone(sometimes referred to as an “on-ear” or “ear cup” headphone)completely encloses your ears. This presents an obvious benefit:It crowds out surrounding noise. These headphones also arehigher-end, delivering richersounds and a deeper bass than

ear buds. They also tend to fea-ture noise-cancellation technol-ogy, which uses a combination ofphysical material and digitaltechnology to dampen any ambi-ent noise around you while pre-serving the sound of your music. The downside: They’re not asportable as your other options, and they’re pricier.

For the Hardcore MusicLover

If high fidelity is their desire, they’ll need a pair of over-the-earheadphones that can deliver bothpristine sound and a comfortablefit for hours. Listeners can pairthese audiophile headphoneswith a common MP3 player, butthey’re better served connectedto an A/V receiver.

Sennheiser’s HD 595 head-phones use the company’s Er-gonomic Acoustic Refinement(EAR) design to better directsound toward your ear. Aleatherette headband and velourear pads give the HD 595 a softtouch during use and its ninefoot cable lets you enjoy a thun-derous movie night from thecouch without waking the kids.Price: $329, sennheiserusa.comfor dealers

Not every music lover appre-ciates Dr. Dre, but they’re sure tolike his Studio Beats headphonesfrom Monster Cable. They de-liver noise cancellation through

the company’s “powered isola-tion” technology via a pair ofAAA batteries. Plus they offer adigital amplifier and a scratchresistant finish. Price: $349,beatsbydre.com for dealers

For the CommuterTrekking back and forth on a

train or bus requires a set ofheadphones that are highlyportable and can drown out thosearound you without explodingyour eardrum. Headphones withBluetooth technology can estab-lish a wireless connection with amusic player (provided it sup-ports Bluetooth) so listenerswon’t get tangled up with wire asthey travel.

Jaybird’s Freedom (JB200) isa water-resistant Bluetoothheadphone that features asturdy headband for keeping earbuds in place while you hustle toget out of the rain. There’s also abuilt-in microphone, so it candouble as a wireless earpiece foryour cell phone when not stream-ing your tunes. It features noisecancellation and has a 4-hourbattery life.Price: $129, jay-birdgear.com for dealers

If you’re on a tighter budget,in-ear headphones are a good al-ternative – they’re lightweightand tend to stay put as you walk. The Klipsch Image S4 doesn’thave Bluetooth but does providenoise cancellation and flexible

oval ear tips (which are washableand available in threesizes).Price: $99, klipsch.com fordealers

For the TravelerNoise cancellation is a must-

have feature in any headphoneyou’re sizing up for a frequentflyer. This technology greatly re-duces the drone of an airplaneengine but requires power to op-erate, so battery life is an impor-tant consideration.

The Bose QuietComfort 15boasts a 35-hour life on a singleAAA battery, with microphonesinside and outside of the head-phones to detect and reduce am-bient noise. It employs new earcushion material that the com-pany says also contributes toblunting noise. It ships with atwo-prong airline adapter, so youwon’t be stuck with the crummyheadphones that many airlinesmake you buy. Price: $299,bose.com for dealers

A lower cost alternative is theAudio-Technica QuietPoint(ATH-ANC1). The headphonepromises to block out up to 85percent of outside noise via anexternal noise-cancelling moduleon the connecting cord. Puttingnoise-cancelling circuitry on aseparate component makes theheadphones themselves lighteron the head and easier to fold up.An airline adapter also is in-

cluded. Price: $129, audio-tech-nica.com for dealers

For Tuned-Up TeensThe last thing you want to do

is give a teenager another oppor-tunity to tune you out, but if youmust, you’ve got more to considerthan just functionality. Teensdesperately need to look good.

Sony’s EX ear buds deliver atouch of style, with five colorchoices and a rounded exteriorthat looks more like a pearl ear-ring than a headphone. The EXline offers adjustable cords andthree ear pads for customizingyour fit. Price: $19, sonystyle.comfor dealers

If you want a higher-end op-tion, Jaybird’s Sportsband head-phones provide a secureover-the-ear fit perfect for trackstars. Plus, they offer built-inBluetooth, a choice of nine colorsand higher fidelity audio thanksto its digital enhancement tech-nology dubbed apt-X. A built-inmic turns the Sportsband into ahands-free device, not that you’llgive them the car keys anytimesoon. Price: $99, jaybirdgear.comfor dealers

Music To Their EarsWhether it’s an audiophile who spends his evenings enjoying LPs or the commuter who sneaks in a podcast on her way to work, without the right headphones, it’s all just noise

By Taniesha RobinsonCTW Features

The sleek black Kinect sensorplugs into any Xbox 360 and re-tails for $149.99. The Xbox 3604GB Console with Kinect is$299.99.

Happy Holidays

800 CHARLESTON AVE., MATTOON, ILPHONE/FAX (217) 235-3731
