Welcome to our Autumn production of 2009, Iolanthe, a Gilbert &Sullivan classic.

Firstly a big thank you to our immediate past chair, Natalie O’Sullivan, who unfortunately had to stand down mid-term. She will be a hard actto follow but I will do my best.

I am thrilled that, for once, we have managed to persuade so many mento ‘tread the boards’ – I think that we just outnumber the ladies in thisshow – how many times has that happened since 1953?!

Joining us for this production are our director from the last show, JohnHebden; David Stone, who last played Don Lockwood in Singin’ in theRain last year and Roger Rufey who played ‘Daddy’ Warbucks in Anniein April 2008. Thank you for your support.

My first production with ELODS was Carousel in October 2006, whereI was dragged along one Tuesday evening after a long hard day at workby a member who shall remain nameless – well, as soon as I enteredthe rehearsal room, I was struck by the warmth of the welcome by all, even though I was a complete stranger and they to me. By the end ofthe evening, I was hooked and have never looked back. If you are one ofthose people who have been hiding a secret desire to perform and canhold a note or two, why not come along to a rehearsal? We are afriendly bunch and easy to get along with. We rehearse in WinchmoreHill and details are on our website: www.elods.org.uk.

If you want to get involved in theatre life but the stage/singing is not foryou, then you are welcome too. From Front of House to back stage tomake-up, wardrobe, props, stage management, lighting, sound or boxoffice – there is always a need for an extra pair of hands. I would loveto hear from you so please get in touch with me [email protected].

So here we are again, ready for another show. The rehearsals havefinished, the tickets have been sold (hopefully!), the set has been paintedand the lights are about to dim – so sit back and enjoy Gilbert &Sullivan take the ‘P’ out of 19th century British politics – nothing reallychanges. Enjoy !

Iolanthe, or The Peer and the Peri, is a comic opera with music by ArthurSullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It is one of the Savoy operas and isthe seventh collaboration of the fourteen between Gilbert and Sullivan.

Iolanthe was first produced in London at the Savoy Theatre, on 25November 1882, three days after Patience closed, and ran for 398performances. The story concerns a band of immortal fairies who findthemselves at odds with the House of Peers. The opera satirises manyaspects of British government and law.

The opening night of Iolanthe was an occasion for what must haveseemed a truly magical event in 1882. The Savoy Theatre was the firsttheatre in the world to be wired for electricity, and such stunning specialeffects as sparkling fairy wands were possible.

A glittering crowd attended the first night, including Captain (laterCaptain Sir) Eyre Massey Shaw, head of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, whom the Fairy Queen apostrophizes in the second act ("Oh, CaptainShaw/Type of true love kept under/Could thy brigade with coldcascade/Quench my great love, I wonder?"). On the first night, AliceBarnett as the Fairy Queen sang the verses directly to the Captain, tothe great delight of the audience.

Synopsis

Twenty-five years before the opera begins, Iolanthe (a fairy) married amortal – a crime punishable by death under fairy law! However, the fairyQueen commuted Iolanthe's sentence to banishment for life, providedthat Iolanthe never see her husband again. Our story starts with thefairies pleading the Queen to allow Iolanthe to return, as they miss thesongs she sang and the lessons she taught, like how to curl up inside abuttercup.

The fairies discover that Iolanthe has a son called Strephon, who is half afairy. Strephon is in love with Phyllis, a ward of the Lord Chancellor. However, Phyllis is the fairest of all the Lord Chancellor’s wards, soStrephon and Phyllis have the whole of the Peerage and its laws toovercome before they can be married.

As the show goes on, there are more and more misunderstandings andsurprising revelations as the fairy kingdom clashes with Parliament, withrather amusing consequences…

Cast

Alison Bilsby Fairy Queen

After a two year break, Alison is delighted to be back performing withsuch a close group of friends. Favourite roles in previous ELODSproductions have been Yum Yum in Hot Mikado, Casilda in TheBoardwalk Gondoliers and Barbara in Billy. She is grateful to herhusband Mark for encouraging her to return for Iolanthe and dedicates her performance in this show both to him and the boys.

Naomi Delamore Iolanthe

Naomi is very much looking forward to playing Iolanthe, even if shedoes have to “live among the frogs”. This is Naomi’s sixth productionwith ELODS but her first Gilbert and Sullivan show and she is reallyenjoying the challenge. She would like to thank the company for all theirencouragement and friendship and hopes you enjoy the show.

Corinne Roberts Phyllis

Corinne Roberts is returning to ELODS after a three-year break, seduced by the lure of Gilbert and Sullivan. Previous G&S roles includeMabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Yum Yum in The Mikado and the titlerole in Patience. Corinne is looking forward to playing Phyllis but isdisappointed that she won't be dressed as a fairy.

David Stone Strephon

David is delighted to be involved for his second production withELODS, as Strephon - aptly playing half a fairy. David has played a varietyof roles for many companies. His favourites include Don Lockwood inSingin in the Rain, Mrs Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Paul SanMarco in A Chorus Line, Britney in We will rock you and The Emcee inCabaret. Enjoy the show!

John Lynch Earl of Mountararat

This show marks ten years with ELODS and up to now John hasmanaged to avoid G & S as it wasn't really "his thing". John auditionedwith some trepidation, but has thoroughly enjoyed landing the part ofLord Mountararat. Past roles including Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof,Emile in South Pacific and Fagin in Oliver have proved to be ofabsolutely no help whatsoever!

Roger Rufey Earl of Tolloller

Despite playing major roles in past ELODS productions, the companyhave been coerced into using Roger’s undoubted but rather dated talentyet again. Tolloller was the very first part Roger ever played back in1961. The local newspaper reported " a pretty but light voice butwithout much acting ability, could be likened to a stick insect in earlyscenes." Not a lot has changed over the intervening years except thatculinary delights and a love of beer have improved his figure to give it aRubinesque quality!

Howard Wright Private Willis

Howard joined ELODS way back in 1977, after many years back-stage.Favourite roles for ELODS and other local groups include Billy Flynn inChicago, Judge Turpin in Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, Judd Fry inOklahoma!, Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance (twice) and the Governorin The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Enjoy the show.
