Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) program eligibility criteria is: i. At or below 200% of poverty ii. Homelessness iii. Preschool student parents or guardians are school dropouts iv. Family income is less than 350% of federal poverty guidelines in the case of preschool students with special needs or disabilities. Guidelines: The program will include high quality preschool education, health screenings to include hearing, vision and dental screenings, developmental (language, gross and fine motor), and speech screenings, parental involvement, and transportation. 1. The program will comply with the staffing standards required by Section 22.1-199.1C, Code of Virginia. 2. The program will align curriculum with Virginia’s Foundation Blocks for Early Learning. 3. Preschool students will be evaluated in the fall and in the spring in all areas covered by the state preschool standards. Program will also use PALS Pre-K in the fall and in the spring. 4. The program will be full (6 hours) day for the school year (180 days). 5. Giles County Public Schools will ensure that teachers and instructional assistants attend at least 15 clock hours per year of professional development. 6. Giles County Public Schools will develop and use criteria for eligibility for services. 7. Giles County Public Schools will determine tuition cost for program. 8. The projected number of PK Tuition Slots is 18 slots minimum (additional slots may be available depending on class enrollment in each of the three preschool classrooms.). Scope of Service: The curriculum must align with the Virginia’s Foundation Blocks for Early Learning. The Foundation Blocks establish a measurable range of skills and knowledge essential for four-year-olds to be successful in kindergarten. The purpose of the Foundation Blocks is to provide early childhood educators a set of comprehensive standards with indicators of success for entering kindergarten derived from scientifically-based research. They reflect a consensus of preschool student conceptual learning, acquisition of basic knowledge, and participation in meaningful and relevant learning experiences. The curriculum for all preschool programs is Creative Curriculum. Giles County Public Schools will use the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening instruments for pre-kindergarten students (PALS- Pre-K) for literacy screening during the fall and spring of each school year. Preschool student assessment will include data collection through the GOLD Assessment program. Tuition Preschool Eligibility: 1. Application Process:

1. Complete all sections of the Giles County Preschool Tuition Program Application (attached).

2. Provide Child’s Original Birth Certificate (copy will be made for child’s file).

3. Provide copy of Parent/Guardians’ picture ID.

4. Provide Proof of Giles County Residency OR employment with Giles County Public Schools or Giles County.

5. If applicable: Copy of Custody Papers.

6. Applications will be available by February of the current year. Preschool students will be placed by June 1st of the current

year. Applications received after this day will be considered for available slots or go on a waiting list for the current year.

7. Applications will not be considered until ALL required information is provided.

Tuition Process:

1. Tuition will be $55 per week ($198 per month (September –June).

Based on the current school calendar, daily rates will apply to weeks with less than five scheduled schools days,

holidays and inclement weather days. Daily rate will apply to Delayed schedule days (2 hours late) and early dismissals.

Any payment adjustments due to less than 180 instructional days will be applied for June payment.

2. Tuition is required for all scheduled school days. Payment is required when preschool student is absent.

Tuition payments will be due on the 3rd of each month for the previous month. If payment is not received by the 15th

of each month, student is in jeopardy of losing his/her preschool slot.

3. Tuition payments will be by automatic bank draft or salary deduction (preferred).

Additional Costs:

Breakfast and Lunch

1. Parents/guardians will be responsible for paying for all preschool student meals (breakfast and/or lunch).

*Lunch: Full-$2.10 Reduced-.40

*Prices subject to change for 2019-20 school year.

2. Snack will be provided each day.

Field Trips

3. Parent/guardians will be responsible for paying for all preschool student field trip fees (admission, etc.) and meals.

School Supplies

4. All school supplies including paper, pencils, crayons, etc. will be provided.

Tuition Slot Locations:

1. Tuition slots will be available in the following PK classrooms:

Narrows Elementary-VPI/Tuition Classroom

Macy Elementary-Combo Classroom

Macy Elementary-VPI/Tuition Classroom

Eastern Elementary –VPI/Tuition Classroom

Number of slots per classroom will be determined based on all preschool program placements.

Transportation: Transportation will be provided upon request by Giles County Public Schools.
