Academic Eligibility
The Gillespie County 4-H program and the Texas A&M Agrilife
Extension Service supports the Texas Education Code require-
ments to be labelled as an official “extracurricular activity”.
Please keep in mind that in all 4-H competitive events 4-H
members must be eligible to compete. This applies regardless
of the day or time during the week the event is held. Eligibility
requirements apply to all 4-H members whether they are en-
rolled in public, private or home school. Eligibility is deter-
mined by the school, not the county Extension agent. Parents
should address questions about a student’s eligibility to the
school.
I’M A 4-H PARENT OR ADULT VOLUNTEER, DO I

the annual enrollment process in 4-H Connect titled “Texas 4-H

Theme: For 2017 the theme is “Reflections”. These are photos shot off any natural

when thinking about reflections in everyday life and where they are seen.
Changes to rules for 2017. Photos must be 8X10 in size with a quality resolution. Over the

Livestock
Is this your first time to show an animal? Did you turn 14 yrs. before August 31st, 2016 and you have not taken
the senior level quality counts exam? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you need to take
the quality counts exam.
What is Quality Counts?
Quality Counts is an online program designed to teach youth to have high standards in caring for their livestock. The program focuses on
displaying good character while working with livestock. Once the program is completed by passing either the junior level or senior level exam,
the participant will receive a Quality Counts verification number. This number is required for ALL stock show entries (county AND major stock
shows).
Where do I go to take the Quality Counts Exam?
The link is http://agrilife.org/qualitycounts/verification/
Once you are on the website, click on the word “Verification” and click on “Take the test and become Verified”. If you are only showing
through 4-H, then click on “4-H” icon. If you are showing through 4-H and FFA, then click on the “4-H and FFA” icon. Enter your basic infor-
mation, and make sure that you enter that you are showing in Gillespie County!!! If you do not enter Gillespie County, we will not be able to
retrieve your Quality Counts Number! Then, begin answering each question on the test and submit your exam when finished. We will be able
to see if you have completed the exam, and it will not be necessary for you to bring in a copy of your quality counts certificate.
My 4-H member has taken the quality counts exam previously; does he/she have to take it again?
It depends on the exhibitor’s age. Exhibitors must take and pass the junior level exam once until age 14 (as of August 31, 2016). Once an
exhibitor turns 14, then he/she must take and pass the senior level exam one time. It is not necessary to take the exam again each year un-
less the member is moving from the junior level to the senior level.
If you would like for Taylor
Osbourn or Brad Roeder to
come and look at your animal
projects, please contact our
office and set up an appoint-
ment with them.

HIGH SCHOOL AEROSPACE SCHOLARS The High School Aerospace Scholars application is now open at:
http://has.aerospacescholars.org.
High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) is a NASA
unique opportunity for juniors who are interested in
science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) at
no cost to participants.
Selected students will participate in an interactive,
online course during the school year that culminates in
an all-expense-paid trip to NASA’s Johnson Space Cen-
ter in the summer. During the online course, students will investi-
gate space exploration challenges by creating technical draw-
ings, solving math problems, and participating in discussion forums with
NASA engineers and scientists. Texas certified teachers guide students
through the online curriculum and grade their work. After a competitive
review of online material completed and submitted, selected
students are invited to Johnson Space Center. Throughout this six
day trip, participants will work with NASA mentors to complete
engineering design challenges and plan a mission to Mars. Stu-
dents will be briefed on the past, present, and future of space
exploration by NASA engineers, scientists, and special guests
while touring NASA’s facilities.

WILD GAME DINNER Volunteer Meeting: Wednesday, November 16th at 6pm at the Fairgrounds
The Gillespie County Wild Game Dinner will be held Saturday, Nov. 19TH at
the Gillespie County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 5:30pm. Tickets are $20
each which includes dinner, drinks, and door prize chances. This event
helps support agriculture, youth education, and rural living in the Hill Coun-
try. Gillespie County 4-H & FFA will assist in food service, raffle sales and
cleanup throughout the evening. Club managers should e-mail a list of
volunteer workers to Shelee Padgett at [email protected] by
Nov. 2nd.
WOOL & MOHAIR JUDGING There have been some changes made to the wool and mohair judging pro-
gram. In response to this, we will be hosting two workshops for agents and
coaches of 4-H wool and mohair judging teams. In each workshop, we’ll dis-
cuss the new rules and processes that will be used in the 2017 judging sea-
son. We will discuss what services we provide with regard to wool fleeces and
mohair samples that you can source for your teams to practice upon. We will
also discuss the services we can provide with regard to set-up, delivery, and
placing officials for invitational and district contests. Last, but not least, the
workshop will include a mock contest using the new wool and mohair rules.
Following the contest, participants will have ample time to work on improving
their wool and mohair judging skills.
These workshops are not just for “old hands.” They are also a good opportuni-
ty for folks from counties that have not traditionally had wool and mohair
judging teams to learn about how these contests function.
Workshop Dates and Locations:
December 7th – San Angelo
December 12th - Stephenville
Email Dr. Redden to [email protected] if you are interested in the
workshop!
