Who is the MRP for? GingerCloud’s MRP is a world first, modified form of touch-only rugby, specifically developed to allow girls, boys and young adults with learning and perceptual disabilities to play rugby and belong at their local club. Each participant has their own club PlayerMentor on the field supporting them. PlayerMentors are adolescent or university age volunteers from their rugby club specifically trained to help their MRP Players experience the sheer thrill of playing rugby, often for the first time. The MRP season each year is aligned with the Junior Club Rugby season with the majority of training and games occurring in Term 2 of the school year with the PlayerMentor Pre-Season Information and Modified Skills training Sessions being held in Term 1. What does the MRP aim to do? The MRP aims to move girls, boys and young adults with learning and perceptual disabilities off the sideline and into the main game. Through the GingerCloud Leadership Program, PlayerMentors are trained and educated about disability particularly highlighting what is awesome about their MRP Players. This understanding supports the PlayerMentors to grow to become a generation of young people for whom disability is normalised. Who developed the MRP and who endorses the program? GingerCloud’s team of Allied Health professionals, families with children with learning and perceptual disabilities and rugby peak bodies developed the MRP’s modified rugby laws in 2014. Rugby Australia (RA) endorsed the MRP as a new division of rugby in 2017. GingerCloud’s Leadership Program features MRP Ambassadors and rugby legends Tim Horan (AM), Nathan Sharpe and Stephen Moore and St. George Qld Reds player Andrew Ready. How is the MRP modified for girls, boys and young adults with learning and perceptual disabilities? Learning and Perceptual Modifications

• The MRP has been developed taking into account the following specific areas.

 The MRP Players’:

§5 senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell

§Attention

§Communication

§Social skills

§Proprioceptive and Vestibular development.

MRP teams train and play just prior to the start of other divisions to reduce sensory impacts.

Across the three MRP divisions - MRP, MRP 7s and MRP Colts – there are specific structural and coaching modifications based on the varying needs of girls, boys and young adults with learning and perceptual disabilities.

All MRP divisions are supported by the Head Coach, Team Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Parent Coaches (if required) and on-field PlayerMentors.

What makes the MRP different from existing divisions of rugby?MRP Divisions

• There are 3 MRP divisions designed to meet the needs of MRP Players across each division.

The MRP (the original form of the program) has been designed for MRP Players between 7 and 13 who are matched and supported one-on-one by a teenage PlayerMentor. There is significant scaffolding, modifications and support across all parts of this division including foundational rugby skills, reduced field size and playing time. The approved rules are a combination of Under 6 and Under 7 RA guidelines.

The MRP 7s is a modified form of the VIVA 7s format and is a faster, more independent form of the game. The field size is larger than in the MRP, the skill set has increased and whilst there are PlayerMentors of mixed ages on-field, they support all the MRP Players in their team. Please note that previous experience in an MRP team is required to be able to join an MRP 7s team and the MRP season runs for 14 rather than 10 weeks.

The MRP Colts has been designed for young adults between 14 and 18 who are matched with university-aged PlayerMentors between 19 and 24. The field size is larger than in the MRP, the skill progression across the season is faster however each MRP Player is still matched one-on-one with a PlayerMentor.

** Please note that in 2018, the MRP original will be the only division offered at the Vikings. Other divisions will be offered in later seasons.**

PlayerMentors

• All PlayerMentors who volunteer to participate in MRP, MRP 7s and MRP Colts teams receive specific training – both on and off the field – around how to best support their MRP Players.

• The cornerstone of this training is mandatory participation in the GingerCloud Leadership Program delivered and supported by MRP Ambassadors Nathan Sharpe, Tim Horan AM, Stephen Moore and Andrew Ready.

There are 3 phases of the GingerCloud Leadership Program featuring on-line videos across a range of topics delivering specific language around inclusion, mentoring and leadership.

PlayerMentors are asked to view a short video each week and then answer 3 questions in a closed, moderated forum.
