GIOVANNI GABRIELI'S FATHER

To the Editor. When I was an undergraduate student my music professor made much of the

fact that historians knew the name of Giovanni Gabrieli's uncle, but not that of his father. I subsequently learned the name (it was published fifteen years ago), but I have not seen it in any of the usual musical reference works or musicological writings on Gabrieli. Perhaps I have overlooked it, to my disgrace. But perhaps you have other readers who have also overlooked the relevant literature.

Giovanni Gabrieli, son of Piero, is mentioned in Wilfrid Brulez, Marchands flamands a Venise I (1568-1605), Etudes d'histoire economique et sociale, tome VI (Rome and Brussels: L'Institut Historique Belge de Rome, 1965), p. 502, no. 1537, with other references on pp. 500-02, 548-49, 627-30, and 656-62. The

possibility that this is the wrong Giovanni Gabrieli seems very remote. Thomas Bridges 60 William Street Princeton, NJ 08540

AACR2: THE FIRST YEAR AT URBANA

To the Editor: The implementation of the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloguing

Rules (AACR2) (Chicago: American Library Association, 1978) has been antici-

pated with much uneasiness throughout the library community. In the hope that I can allay some of that anxiety I will attempt to explain a little about our

experience at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) where we have simultaneously closed our old catalogues and implemented the new rules, fully a year in advance of the Library of Congress. I will begin by stating that, although this task has not been without its pitfalls, it has by and large been less traumatic than any of us had anticipated.

The decision to close the Main Library catalogue was based on the fact that maintenance of the old catalogue had become impossible. While development proceeds on an online Full Bibliographic Record System (FBR) with a projected target date sometime in 1982, the supplementary (AACR2) catalogue bridges the

gap between the old card catalogue and the FBR. Since our OCLC archive tapes will form the basis of the FBR, and since we knew we were ultimately going to be using AACR2, it seemed logical to our administration to begin using the new
