EXPORT MAP TO ILLUSTRATOR

In ArcMap:File > Export Map > Save as type ‘AI’

Open the AI file in Adobe Illustrator.

If the layer’s window is not already opened, go to the ‘Windows’ pull down menu and select LAYERS.Shortcut: F7

ILLUSTRATOR LAYERSYour layers in ArcMap are kept in the AI file.

Eye symbol: makes layers visible/not visible. (The same as the check mark in GIS.

Lock symbol: keeps layers visible but will not allow you to select or change items in the layer

Layers in AI work the same way as they do in GIS.

MANIPULATING ELEMENTSYour line, shape, and point files are translated into individual elements in AI. This allows you to manipulate each line/point/shape individually.

Color menu similar to GIS (under the Windows)

**The one on top is what you are changing the colors on.

Any new information you want to add to your map should be done on a separate layer(s).

MANIPULATING ELEMENTSWhy would I need to know this?!?!

Bringing files into AI will allow you to quickly change elements and draw new elements.

You could…Propose a new road

Propose trees along an existing road

Change the boundaries of a park

Black arrow: selects the entire object. Good for scaling, rotating and moving objects.

White arrow: allows you to manipulate individual points. Good for changing the shape of an object or changing the direction of a line.Pen tool:

Allows you to draw new shapes (hold shift to draw straignt 90 lines.)

Draw a line

Add a square/ rectangle shape

MATCHING PROPERTIESWant another shape to look the same as another? This is the tool for you!!

The eye dropper tool allows you to match one element’s properties to another.

First: Select the object you want to change. You will know it is selected because it is outlined and the individual points are highlighted.

Then select the eye dropper tool from the tool bar.

Finally, click the object you want to match your selected object to!
