PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear families,

PlaySpace Initiative We have had this initiative for several years to get feedback from students about what they want in the playground and how to use the spaces around the school as effectively as possible. As a result, we have used their feedback to create the passive play area, the mud kitchen, the GaGa pits and the types of equipment to include in our playgrounds.

We recently received a $1000 Telstra donation to support our PlaySpace and Sustainability initiative. This will fund ‘loose parts’ and other materials for creative play and cubby building on the retaining wall later this term. We are also looking forward to having the junior play equipment near the new gym in place by the start of Term 4.

Healthy Achievement Our Healthy Achievement Team met this morning. We discussed the Oral Health component of the initiative. Gisborne PS is registered with Australian Dental Health Victoria as its local dental provider for first term next year. This term the teachers will be showing students how to look at labels to find out how much sugar is in the drinks and snacks they are eating.

We are also combining some sustainable practices with healthy eating to promote Nude Food lunch boxes. Your children will let you know more about bringing their food in reusable containers instead of bringing plastic that goes to landfill.

I have a Principal’s Award this week for Jasmine W in Prep E for her daily healthy nude food lunch box.

SunSmart – in the new regulations, we need to start thinking about being SunSmart from August/September. We also want to remind parents that we do not supply sunscreen at school. Please provide your child’s sunscreen in their bag and the teachers will remind them to apply it before they go outside. Please see the Healthy Achievement item in this newsletter.

Principal Awards for Personal Best and Agency

□ 1D and 2A — Connor B, Jun H, Mabel E, Levi D and Olivia B went above and beyond, in Home Learning, and are consistently demonstrating agency at school.

□ 4C— Jack P is receiving an award for the optional task of a diorama that he made during lock-down.

□ 6B — Ben L and Eden S are recognized for general effort and personal best in learning.

MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Caring Hearts, Caring Minds, Caring Actions

Enrolments 2022 Our enrolments are coming in for 2022 and we ask that if you know

of a family or have a child that will be attending GPS next year,

please send through the enrolment forms as soon as possible. If you

are already a part of our school community and have a younger

child starting next year, please send your enrolments in soon. If you

have any questions regarding enrolments, please contact the

school office.

Willowbank Primary School – IMPORTANT INFORMATION We understand there are conversations regarding the new school and whether families are

moving their children to Willowbank PS in 2022. Parents have a choice in where they send their

children to school as long as the school has places available. You may be in the zone for the

new school, however you are not required to move your child given you are already enrolled

here. On the other hand, it may be more convenient to send your child/ren to Willowbank PS

and we respect parent decision and choice. If this is the case, please let the school know

ASAP to assist us with numbers and organisation for 2022.

Parent Opinion Survey Please make sure you complete the Parent Opinion Survey that was emailed to families last

Thursday.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day Yesterday was Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. The

theme this year is “Proud in Culture, Strong in Spirit”. It is a day to

celebrate the culture and connection to Country of all our Indigenous

students and teach all our students about the importance and

significance of the oldest living culture in the world. Many classes

participated in activities with this as its focus.

Enjoy the weekend.

Lisa Maxwell

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE CONT’D

Effects of Lockdown — John Hattie Principals’ Conference Cont’d Remote learning gave some students the opportunity to increase their learning attributes around agency, independence and monitoring their own learning progress and they thrived in this environment. Hattie also reiterated his research around the importance of challenging and engaging learning. This involves teachers talking less and allowing students to do the work at their point of need with targeted, purposeful explicit teaching in small groups. These are our practices at GPS; our Instructional Model is based on Hattie’s research and what we see works best in our PLC inquiries.

Hope you’re enjoying catching up on the Olympic Games events. Julie Soutter

HEALTHY ACHIEVEMENT TEAM @ GISBORNE PRIMARY

NUDE FOOD DAY — TUESDAYS We are starting Nude Food Tuesday on Tuesday the 10th of August. We will be doing this every Tuesday for the rest of the term. We will announce the classes who have the most students with nude food at each assembly each week. What is nude food? Nude food is when you don’t bring any packets of food to school so we can help our school environment.
