Message from the Chairman

Dear Friends,

This has been a very busy year for Green India Trust and associated communities.

The year 2015 - 16 was a tough, challenging and yet, satisfying year.

It was tough because we began work on our new projects, but without losing focus on our existing projects.

It has been challenging year, as we had to find space for our work in new locations. And it has been satisfying because have managed to do all this and more.

Page 8: GIT Annual Report - 2015 - 16

8

We have continued our work – with relentless pressure and results – to see how we can bring change for good environmental management in this vast and critical country. And at the same time, we have interacted with large numbers of people and organization across the world for global results.

Long-standing problems such as air pollution, climate change and decreasing biodiversity are all interconnected and cannot be treated separately.

What links these problems are the socio - technical systems that provide us with the requirements of a modern society: the transport, housing, energy and food systems, to name just a few.

Fundamental shifts in such core societal systems will be necessary if we are to follow a credible trajectory towards 2050.

I have been saying in various occasions over and over again that good policy requires timely, reliable information. It also requires an understanding of the fundamentals of wider environmental, scientific and societal realities: the chemistry of coastal management, for example, and the fundamentals of human behavior, in both individuals and communities.

This has become clear as interactions with regulators, media and civil society shows that they value our cooperation because of the relevant experience we bring to the table.

High-ranking officials of the Ministry of Environment and Forests articulated this demand saying that they want to work with Green India Trust because we understand local capacity and other governance issues and can help them find approaches that work.

Page 9: GIT Annual Report - 2015 - 16

9

I also feel and convey at various interactions that global action needs local activities and results. This is what our programme must aim to do. And local impact can then be used to inform other countries of future directions and also learn from each other about how to make necessary changes, in situations, which are difficult, contentious and crippled by lack of finance and capacity.

Green India Trust activities for global action aim to encompass the local – national - regional and global scales.

I want to thank you for all of your efforts to support Green India Trust, for working to make the transition towards a low - carbon, resource - efficient and ecosystem - resilient society by 2050 and for your individual and collective efforts to make this world a healthier place for future generations.

I am pleased to have been a part of the process towards a well structured, targeted and ambitious Green India Trust, which sets out clear priorities for the work of the GIT in the coming years.

The 2015 - 16 Work ProgrammeThe 2015 – 16 Green India Trust annual work programme built on the work of the previous years, with the aim of:

Continuing the existing Billion Tree Plantation (BTP), Green Wall (GW) & Green Awareness activities.

Transforming lives of under privileged youths & students in coastal villages and in SC/ST villages of SPSR Nellore district by setting up of Green India Trust Computer Training Center (GITCTC)

Establishing ‘People’s Institution’ which provide an environment of trust and cooperation in which people come to realize they are able to help themselves to achieve the economic, social and political goals that they themselves define by Implementation of the Self Help Group (SHG) Approach

Establishment of the project Sawang Sampurna - Stitching and Tailoring Training Centers in coastal villages and in SC/ST villages of SPSR Nellore district in order to provide the necessary skills to integrate the local handicraft and tailoring industry and to empower students for their economical survival, self-reliance and sustainability of their livelihood.

Our experience in working with the most deprived, ignored and under privileged sections represents that they are in dire need of government assistance for their overall progress in daily life hence the project Na Hakku - My Right was planned and launched in the last quarter to provide required guidance and assistance for getting the basic government documents like Aadhar Card, Voter Card, Job Card, Bank Papers, Insurance Papers etc

Coastal Resources are of much help to the mankind. Ecosystems of coastal resources have specific impacts on human life.

This “Green Wall” Project deals with issues related to Palmyra covers and other forms of plantation.

Yhe “Green Wall” Project of Green India Trust will establish a systematic management of plantation ecosystem to secure this valuable resource.

The “Green Wall” project will play a role as an active agency for prevention of the Palmyra covers, Palmyra conservation and restoration.

The increase in Palmyra area will help the coastal community by way of easy access to fuel wood and small timber requirement through sustainable harvesting. Since there will be a community based approach, the community will have a feeling of owning the Project and the Concept will be a sustainable one, in the long run.

This innovative approach of project “Green Wall” by Green India Trust will open an entirely new horizon to target local community associations or local authorities as it will not only require expertise, but also labourers, who will get daily wages hence the economic upliftment of all the targeted project area will happen through the alternative livelihood of being a stake holder in “Green Wall” project.

Green AwarenessTHE AIM OF THE PROJECT

Since environment is a matter that involves us all, the project Green Awareness by Green India Trust is as an effort to support the emphasis on environmental protection and management.

The term “Green Awareness” has a broad connotation. It not only implies knowledge about environment but also attitude, values and necessary skills to solve environment related problems. Moreover, environmental awareness is the initial step ultimately leading to the ability to carry on responsible citizenship behavior.

Green Awareness is a process of recognizing values and clarifying concepts in order to develop skills and added tools necessary to

Page 22: GIT Annual Report - 2015 - 16

22

understand and appreciate the inter-relationship among man, his culture and his bio-physical surrounding. It creates an overall perspective, which acknowledges the fact that natural environment and man-made environment are interdependent. The perspective should consider the environment in its totality and should be a continuous lifelong process.

Immediate objectives

The immediate objectives are to provide a foundation on which the public might be sensitized to the importance of environmental protection and management in achieving the national objective of economic growth - to improve the public awareness for environmental protection and management.

Green India Trust Computer Training Center (GITCTC)

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT

To provide free/subsidized computer oriented training for various scholarships, skill development and leadership program to under privileged youths, women & students.

This project seeks to widen low-income students' access to technology and expand their educational resources by providing a Computer Training Center at their near location to meet all their computing needs. By doing so, this project aims to even the playing field and enhance low-income students' capacity to succeed.

Through the installation of Computer Training Center, hundreds of students will have the opportunity to learn vital computing skills and more effectively compete in a scarce job market, offering them an opportunity to create jobs and wealth and ending the cycle of poverty in their families and community. They will form social and economic networks through the internet, opening up windows of opportunity.

Identifying the very poor, mobilizing them and helping them realize their rights by building their capacity so that they can participate equally in society.

Bringing large numbers of people together in small, homogenous groups that meet and share their experiences, concerns and ideas on a weekly basis.

Generating an attitudinal change in members so that they can unleash their God-given potential. This is achieved by helping members realize that they are worthy, have potential and can take action for their own development.

Establishing the structures of a People’s Institution as small groups come to work together through larger clusters, and eventually through a large representative organisation that works to bring about structural changes.

Supporting the structures of the People’s Institution to establish linkages to relevant stakeholders on community, district, regional and even national levels.

Handing overall ownership and responsibility to the People’s Institution after developing their capacity to continue independently and sustainably.
