Give it a Go (GIAG) is a great way to try out fun activities in and around Newcastle! This booklet shows you all the activities planned for the first term, and should entertain you up until the Christmas break! All sessions are open to ALL students, so you do not have to be a member of anything to get involved!

St James Tour

Friday 28th September, 1pm, FREE

New to the city? Come and have a tour of the Geordies pride and joy…the football stadium! Whatever it’s called at the moment, you’ll get access to all the ‘behind the scenes’ areas, including the dressing rooms!

Tynemouth Aquarium

Friday 28th September, 2pm, £2

Come to the wonderful Tynemouth Aquarium, where you can see a variety of sealife in their natural habitat! Including a giant octopus, otters and seals, as well as the new tropical rainforest feature introducing adorable miniature monkeys!

NSR Taster Sessions

Friday 28th September, 2pm, FREE

Fancy yourself as the next Greg James? Get involved with NUSU’s very own radio station with these taster sessions – you will have an opportunity to present your own 20 minute show, selecting your own tracks and telling the campus about your experiences of Freshers Week, or whatever you want really! You will receive basic training and a ‘plan your show’ sheet… come on and Give it a Go!

TCTV Taster Session

Saturday 29th September, 2pm, FREE

Think you’re more of a TV star? Come and try out your very own TV station – TCTV! Those who come to try out TCTV will experience using high tech professional camera equipment and editing software as well as having the chance to perform in front of the camera and create their own TV show! Clothes are compulsory, but what you chose to wear is up to you! The session will last for an hour and half.

Baltic Tour

Saturday 29th September, 1.15pm, FREE

Come and explore our very own nationally renowned modern art gallery, which recently hosted the Turner Prize event 2012! Showing artists include Janet Cardiff exhibiting an exciting voice based work, and Turner Prize winner in 2007; Mark Wallinger.

Swing Dance

Monday 1st October, 8.30pm, FREE

Fancy learning how to swing? This free session will be all beginners with the Swing Dance society with social dancing afterwards. You never have to have ‘swung’ before, just wear comfy shoes you can dance in, clothes you can move in and look forward to a good night of dancing!

Go Global

Choose your Own Adventure Wednesday 3rd October , 2pm, FREE

Ever wanted to be the hero in your own story? Choose your Own Adventure is all that and more. It’s a treasure hunt, photo scavenger hunt, virtual maze, and live action interactive fiction book all in one. Get into teams and explore the city, making decisions together to complete the task and hopefully win a prize. No group will take the same route as another, making it more challenging as you work on your communication and negotiation skills. Sure to be a great afternoon running around the Toon!

Sword Rapper Dancing Wednesday 10th October 7.30pm, FREE

Come and learn the World’s most dangerous and exciting sword dance complete with somersaults! Established in 1949 for Rag week the World Champion Newcastle Kingsmen will teach you a fierce but friendly tradition from the mines of Northumberland and Durham. Thatcher closed the mines down, but the dance lives on! All welcome, please come and learn at your own pace, AND ABSOLUTELY NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Please wear any sensible shoes, but hard soled shoes are recommended.

Wet n’ Wild

Friday 12th October, 2pm, £3

Come and get soaked at the UK’s biggest and best waterpark! With some of the biggest and scariest water flumes in the country, come and have an exhilarating afternoon screaming your head off, followed by a relaxation in the lazy river…

Pilates

Friday 5th October, 6pmFREE

Pilates is a number of exercises used to improve your physical strength, flexibility, posture and mental awareness. Our Pilates class is for all abilities whether you have never done Pilates before or are a pro, the instructor will demonstrate the positions and help each person with their own difficulties. So if you fancy something a little different that you’ve never tried before or you know you enjoy come and give it a go!

Bike Polo

Sunday 7th October 2pm, FREE

The King of sports and the sport of Kings. Bike Polo is a fun and challenging sport which follows the rules of traditional polo but without the ponies. All you need is a pair of trainers and appropriate clothing for riding a bike. The session will last about two hours on West Jesmond playing fields and involve student led matches and basic mallet handwork. If you have a bike please bring it, however, we do have a few bikes to lend out to students.

Latin & Ballroom

Thursday 1st November, 7pm, FREE

We are the Latin and Ballroom Society and during our one hour Give It A Go session we will give you a chance to learn some basic steps of a few Latin and Ballroom dances and our enthusiastic teachers will teach you dancing techniques. The teachers and society members are great and want to help you learn. You will get to meet lots of new people and our classes are very sociable. All you have to bring is yourselves. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Liverpool

Saturday 3rd November, 8am, £10

Take a day out to one of Britain’s most popular cities, previously the European capital of culture; explore the docks, Liverpool’s complicated past, modern future and Beatles legacy. Your ticket includes transportation both ways, and you will be left to enjoy your day in Liverpool.

Go Ape

Sunday 28th October 10.45am, £20Go Ape is a high ropes course that lets you go flying through the Northumberland forests in an exhilarating and scary afternoon out! Price includes transportation, all equipment and entry, and places are extremely limited.

Halloween Ghost Walk

Wednesday 31st October, 6.30pm, FREE

It’s Halloween so come and hear some grisly tales of Newcastle and scare yourself silly! Learn stories of ghosts, witches, and bodies fished from the river and murders on both sides of the Tyne, so learn some horrible history of your University city!

Greek Pottery PaintingWednesday 24th October, 2pm, FREE

Admire the classic pottery of the ancients and make one yourself by joining us in an afternoon of pottery painting. Learn the techniques used in this art form and the subjects that were featured on this type of pottery. Bring out your painting skills for what is sure to be a fun afternoon of creativity and relaxation. By the end of it, you’ll no longer be able to say it’s all Greek to me!

Edinburgh Zoo Trip

Come and see the many wondrous animals at Edinburgh Zoo with GIAG and the BioSci Society! With over 1,000 animals to gawp and gaze at, this promises to be a great day out! Your ticket price includes transportation both ways, entry to the Zoo and into the Giant Panda experience!

Salsa

Tuesday 6th November, 7pm, FREE

We are the Latin and Ballroom Society and during our one hour Give It A Go session we will give you a chance to learn some basic steps of Salsa dancing and our enthusiastic teachers will help you improve dancing techniques. It is a great atmosphere and you get a chance to meet lots of new people. All you have to bring is yourselves. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Karate

Wednesday 7th November, 6.45pm, FREE

Any budding Karate kids? Newcastle University Shotokan Karate Club (NUSKC) will be holding a FREE taster session. No previous experience required - beginners are more than welcome. Even if you’ve done karate before we welcome all styles and associations. Just come in comfortable clothing (eg. no jeans) and be prepared to take your shoes and socks off.

Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night challengeThursday 8th November, 4pm,FREE

Remember, remember the 5th of November… Learn about more about the man behind Bonfire Night and the English traditions associated with it. Work as a team to stop Guy Fawkes before he blows up Parliament through a series of indoor logic and puzzle challenges and be the hero of the story! Gun powder and angry mobs not included.

Fencing

Friday 9th November, 4pm, FREE

Ever watched Pirates of the Caribbean and wanted to be Will Turner or Elizabeth Swann? This free session will teach you the basics of Fencing; ending with you taking on your friends in a match. Come and learn some swashbuckling moves!

Debate

Monday 12th November, 1pm, FREE

Want to give excellent presentations and breath-taking speeches? Then debating is for YOU. Come to our taster session with exercises and games as well as a show debate. Topics could be anything ranging from serious topics such as tuition fees and other hotbeds of news that are circulating in the media, to light hearted topics such as zombies. Please bring pens and paper and have your wits about you! The session will last for approximately an hour.

Knit 4 Fun Workshop

Wednesday 14th November, 2pmFREEDo you want to learn to knit or crochet? These workshops are for beginners. In the first workshop, we will teach you some basic stitches, get you started on a project which you can practice during the week, and in the process you will make something useful for children in Africa. In the second workshop (the following week) we will get you started on your own project, so you can make something for yourself, for example, a hat or a scarf. Needles, hooks and yarn will be provided.

Nottingham Trip

Saturday 17th November, 8am, £15

Come and visit the home of the legendary Robin Hood, and one of the UK’s major cities! This trip includes a guided tour of the city from Trip Advisors #1 Tour Guide who will teach you about the legend of Robin Hood, take you to England’s oldest pub, explore underground caves and find out why Nottingham Castle isn’t actually a castle…your price includes transportation both ways, the tour and entry into Nottingham Castle. You will also have some time to explore the city on your own.

First term stressing you out? Need your mind clearing and your brain relaxed?! Come to Give it a Go’s free meditation session. You will be taught by an experienced meditation teacher, who will guide you through some easy meditations that you can also use at home. It’s simple and anyone can Give it a Go!

It was the month before Christmas and all through the Union, not a student was stirring it was an illusion!The decorations hung in the building with care, in hopes that the students would soon be there.The students were wrestling with assignments no doubtBut there’s an afternoon activity to help them out!

Take a break from your studies to enjoy Christmas morning! It won’t really be Christmas morning, but this is going to be the next best thing. Join us for an afternoon of cookies, hot chocolate, decoration making and discussions of Christmas around the world. You don’t need to celebrate Christmas to join in on some fun traditions.

Victoria Tunnels

Wednesday 5th December, 2.15pm, FREE

Unbeknown to most residents, Newcastle has a system of underground tunnels below the city (not the metro!!) that have been used for transportation of coal, and as shelters from the terrors of World War II. Come and explore these secret tunnels with a guided tour where you will learn much more about the city you now call home. A must see – sells out FAST!

is the all-new ‘Alternative Sports Programme’ at Newcastle University, giving students an opportunity to try a new sport, pick up an old one or just dip in and out without needing to commit. There are no membership fees, no commitments, and no pressure to compete – it’s just fun, friendly Sport For All!

We offer many different sports every term, each one running for 6 weeks. You don’t need any experience or equipment – every session is suitable for beginners and all equipment is provided. Most sports are £3 per week or £10 for 6 weeks, but some are FREE, so look out for those!

Sign Me Up!For everything except the ‘turn up & play’ sports, you need to book a place, as places are limited. To sign up, just come into the students’ union and pay at the Activities Centre (1st floor) at the Go Play desk. You can also sign up online at www.nusu.co.uk/goplay . You can pay for just one week, or all 6 weeks of one sport – the choice is yours!

Table Tennis”TURN UP & PLAY”

Want something to do at lunchtime? Come join us for fun, friendly ping pong! Bring a friend to play, or turn up and challenge someone! 4 tables, equipment provided, and best of all? Completely free! No registration required!

basketball After success last year, we’re expanding! We’ll have 2 coached sessions where you can hone your skills, and a ‘turn up and play’ league on Saturday. Boys and girls are welcome to all sessions, and no team mates necessary for the Saturday league – all teams are arranged on arrival!
