A Little Help From our Friends, July 1, 2005 – June 30, 2006

Almost half of us will suffer from a diagnosable mental illness at some point in our lifetime—anxiety, depression, attention deficit disorder, social phobia, schizophrenia, etc. Duringthose times, friends can make all the difference in the world, whether by fixing a brokenfaucet, taking our kids for the weekend or helping us find a therapist. Friends area powerful force.

For more than sixty years, that same power has helped Didi Hirsch grow and evolve.Our clients and their families, and our staff and volunteers are our core. Courageouspoliticians, eloquent writers, and people who share their stories, despite stigma anddiscrimination, also have been vital. Together, we have erased despair and restored hope.

Who better to tell Didi Hirsch’s story than our friends, in their richly diverse voices? Inprevious Annual Reports, we featured our staff and clients. This year, we highlight a fewof our volunteers, but there are so many more. At least 170, such as Moving Up—a groupof women who find a job for every woman living at Via Avanta who wants one; and ourSuicide Prevention Center pioneers, Mickey Heilig, Dr. Robert Litman, and Dr. NormanFarberow, who, since their “retirement,” have helped train hundreds of crisis line counselors.

This assignment was an unsettling role reversal for our volunteers. They like to focus onothers. They aren’t very comfortable in the limelight. Giving comes so naturally that theybalked at the thought of our making a big deal about them. So as you read, bear in mindthat they deserve much more credit than this Annual Report reveals. How many of uswould donate our Saturday and Sunday mornings after five long days at both work andcollege? How many of us would be preoccupied with getting back to our volunteer workwhile recovering from a serious accident?

Our volunteers are as reliable and steady as a heartbeat. And they areas essential. So are friends like you. Thank you for all that you give—whether it be in-kind donations, financial support, expertise or advocacy.

Nate has spent much of his life helping others. Whether as a community leader,Air Force psychologist, father, or educator, Nate strongly believes in helping othersby giving them the right tools to overcome any obstacle.

As an educator and college administrator, he has mentored several generations of youngpeople, encouraging them to tap into the best parts of themselves in the face of adversity.As a community activist for organizations such as the NAACP and the Urban League,Nate has helped reduce economic, social, political, educational, and racial inequality.

As a member of Didi Hirsch’s Board of Directors for more than a decade, Nate hashelped the agency form critical alliances with key leaders in the South Los Angelesand Inglewood communities. Through these relationships, Didi Hirsch has been ableto bring services to individuals and families in these neighborhoods, which are themost underserved in Los Angeles County. The programs include child and familycounseling, parenting classes, short-term crisis residential programs, and psychiatricservices for severely mentally ill children and adults.

At our Inglewood Center, four out of every five adults suffering from mental illnesseshave improved their quality of life. Since beginning treatment, they have been able to

better manage their symptoms, adhere to medication regimens, and live independently.

While employed as a billing clerk at Didi Hirsch, Denise went above and beyond byvolunteering with the Development Department to help plan the Erasing the StigmaLeadership Awards and the Alive & Running for Suicide Prevention 5K/10K. Dedicatedto helping promote the Center’s programs, Denise was up as early as 6:00 a.m.on many Sunday mornings to hand out Alive & Running brochures at race sitesacross Los Angeles.

Last year, Didi Hirsch’s Erasing the Stigma Leadership Awards raised more than$350,000 to help fund a wide array of the agency’s programs and services, whilethe Alive & Running for Suicide Prevention 5K/10K had a record-breaking numberof participants and raised nearly $100,000 for the agency’s suicide prevention services.

Bob has worked with Didi Hirsch on the renovation of several centers, including ExcelsiorHouse, Jump Street, and Via Avanta. Most recently, he collaborated with Didi Hirsch on therenovation of the S. Mark Taper Foundation Center, formerly known as Manchester Center.

His company, Jensen/Zigman Construction, led the job from start to finish and worked aroundthe clock to guarantee that the facility would be up and running as soon possible. With all thework Bob has done with Didi Hirsch, he has handled many unanticipated challenges pro-bono.Even after completing projects, Bob continues to lend his time and expertise. He offers tips

to cut maintenance costs and uses his years of experience to connect Didi Hirsch to avariety of building contractors when emergency repairs are needed.

After the renovation of our S. Mark Taper Foundation Center, we provided 20 percentmore clients with counseling, parenting classes, and psychiatric services.

Rosie did not set out to be a role model, but because of her advocacy on behalfof those with mental illness as well as the success of her treatment, that is exactlywhat she has become.

Rosie was diagnosed nearly two decades ago, and since then has made a steadyclimb up a steep mountain. She never would have imagined that she would be askedto speak at Antioch University, where she gave future mental health professionals herperspective on what it means to live with mental illness. Additionally, she graduatedfrom the peer advocacy program at the Westside Center for Independent Living andinterned at Daybreak, a women’s homeless shelter.

At Didi Hirsch, Rosie not only writes newsletter articles for the Clubhouse,a psychosocial program for adults suffering from chronic mental illnesses, shealso volunteers her time collecting satisfaction surveys from clients. Most importantly,Rosie serves as a mentor for fellow clients, using her story to give them guidanceand hope.

A longtime volunteer, Khaki helped build the Clubhouse program from the groundup, working closely with Didi Hirsch staff to create a program that helps adultswith chronic mental illnesses live full and independent lives. Today, she sharesher love of healthy living with Clubhouse clients by leading a cardio fitness classand helping them create nutritious meal plans.

With the help of dedicated staff and volunteers like Khaki, Clubhouse membershave raised their activity levels. In fact, nine out of ten members are nowwell-educated about fitness and nutrition, with more than half of all membersparticipating in the program’s weekly cardio fitness class.

As a certified black belt and self defense instructor, Tim trains people from allwalks of life. From law enforcement personnel to high school teenagers, seniorcitizens and corporate employees, the high demand for his services keeps Timon the go. But, no matter how busy he gets, he sets aside time twice a monthto teach basic, practical self defense to the Via Avanta women, many of whom

are victims of domestic and child abuse.

Two-thirds of the women of Via Avanta, our residential substance abuseprogram, graduated with stable housing, regained custody of their children,

and are now prepared for steady work.

Since she was a child, Rosalind’s parents instilled in her a sense of activism and philan-thropy. In fact, by the time she finished high school, Rosalind had already volunteeredfor nearly a dozen organizations, ranging from animal shelters to convalescent homes.

After a close friend from college took her life, Rosalind took up a new cause. She foundDidi Hirsch’s Suicide Prevention Center and turned her grief into action.

Her experience as a volunteer on the crisis line has given her a new direction inlife. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in clinical psychology at PepperdineUniversity. Grateful for the meaning and insight that being a crisis counselor gives her,Rosalind continues to volunteer on the line even with her challenging school schedule.

Last year, our 24-hour suicide prevention Crisis Linehelped 15,000 callers between the ages of 6 and 92.


Caregivers Support GroupsWe offer support groups for the caregivers ofolder adults with Alzheimer’s disease or someother forms of dementia, as well as for peoplecaring for frail elderly family members.

ClubhouseA drop-in program open five days a week, theClubhouse provides support, social opportunities,and skill building activities for adults with chronicmental illnesses. Members can participate in groupactivities which help to reduce feelings of isolation,take a variety of computer classes, and contributeto a Clubhouse newsletter. The group is selfgoverning, with guidance and support from staffmembers, who also offer therapy groups.

Crisis Residential CareJump Street and Excelsior House are crisisresidential treatment centers, providing a 28-dayprogram for adults who are experiencing seriousproblems due to mental illnesses. Residents mayhave been homeless or at risk of homelessness;the program helps get them stabilized, and providestreatment for their mental illnesses. The programalso helps clients find long-term housing andconnects them to on-going treatment programs.

Employment ServicesThis program helps adults with chronic mentalillnesses find a job. Clients learn computer skills,resume building, and interview strategies, suchas how to dress appropriately for job interviews.After finding employment, clients continue toreceive supportive services to help them besuccessful in the workplace.

Intensive Mental Health ServicesAt our Inglewood and Culver-Palms Centers, weprovide specialized services for adults with seriousmental illnesses, which have led to frequent hospi-talizations or homelessness. Staff members workwith clients in community settings such as work,home, hospitals, and court to help them remainin the community and achieve the highest possiblelevel of functioning. Staff members have smallcaseloads to ensure individualized attention tomeet clients’ needs, and services are providedmultiple times per week if needed.

Outpatient TreatmentPrograms at our headquarters and InglewoodCenter provide outpatient mental health servicesto adults with serious mental illnesses, includingschizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression.Our trained mental health staff provides individualand group therapy, case management, and psychiatricmedication management.

Short-term Crisis Counselingand Crisis InterventionWe provide immediate access to short-termcounseling for individuals and families experiencinga crisis following a life-changing event, such asthe death of a loved one, loss of a job, assault,or life-threatening illness. We also provide shortterm counseling for those who are overcomewith thoughts, feelings, or habits that were oncemanageable and now seem out of control. Thesethoughts or feelings can range from excessiveworry to phobias to inability to cope with a loss.

24-hour Suicide PreventionCrisis LineWe operate Los Angeles County’s only 24-hoursuicide prevention crisis line, for people of all agesat risk of suicide. Our crisis line is also a resourcefor callers who are worried that someone theyknow may be suicidal, as well as for law enforce-ment agencies, who receive crisis responsetraining from our suicide prevention experts.

Suicide Prevention Outreachand EducationStaff and volunteers bring suicide education,awareness, and prevention to underservedcommunities. They provide educational presentationsto schools, churches, community groups, as wellas to hospitals, counseling centers, and otherclinical settings. We teach those already workingin these communities how to train their staff aboutthe warning signs of suicide and how to respondif someone needs help.

Survivors After Suicide ProgramThis program offers support for people whohave lost a loved one to suicide, including 8-weekgroups, monthly drop-in groups, and telephonecounseling. In addition, the program’s SuicideResponse Team works closely with the CrisisResponse Team of the Los Angeles City Mayor’sOffice to offer immediate crisis counseling at thescene of a suicide. These trained members comfortfamilies and connect them to community resourcesthat will help them when loneliness and despairseem overwhelming.

Internship Training ProgramEach year, we train approximately 25 studentsand interns entering the field of mental health.Our comprehensive training program for studentsprovides practicum and work experience opportu-nities for future social workers, psychologists,marriage and family therapists, nurses, andpsychiatrists. Our psychology internship programis accredited by the American PsychologicalAssociation.

Continuing EducationThe Center’s commitment to quality mentalhealth services is supported by an excellentcontinuing education seminar series. Offeredtwice a month from October through July, mentalhealth professionals from within the agencyand from the community are invited to presenta variety of topics to staff. Common themes inthese seminars are challenging diagnostic issues,exposure to new treatment models, professionalethics, special issues in working with culturallydiverse populations, and mental health policy.

Quality Assurance (QA)We are committed to providing treatment thathelps clients successfully meet their goals inas cost-effective a manner as possible. Our QADepartment gathers outcome data, which is usedto evaluate our effectiveness, adjust our practices,and set future goals. The department also trainsstaff and audits our clinical documentationto ensure that we comply with all legal andcontractual requirements.

Alternative Sentencing ProgramsThe Driving Under the Influence (DUI) ‘FirstOffender’ Program at our Metro Center is designedfor those mandated to participate in a DUI program.The program focuses on heightening awareness ofthe consequences of alcohol and other drug impair-ment, and preventing further incidents of drivingunder the influence, through education and coun-seling groups. The Drug Diversion Program at ourMetro Center serves court-referred individuals whohave been identified as having a substance abuseproblem. Our program creates awareness aboutthe negative effects of substance abuse and teacheshealthy coping mechanisms to prevent futurearrest and incarceration.

Community Assessmentand Services Center (CASC)The CASC assesses the mental health and sub-stance abuse needs of CalWORKs, General Reliefand Proposition 36 participants and connects themto local treatment providers. The program alsoserves as a resource center for alcohol and drugabuse treatment programs in the western areaof Los Angeles County.

Community Prevention ProgramsUsing a broad range of public education, skill buildingand community intervention activities, this programseeks to increase individual, family and communityresiliency factors that will help prevent alcohol anddrug related problems among young people andtheir families. One of the strategies used is BeyondBias: Think Peace, a program which teaches prejudicereduction, conflict resolution, and peer mediation.

Drug and Alcohol Treatmentfor Adolescents and AdultsWe provide individual, family, and group outpatientdrug, alcohol, and other substance abuse counselingat our headquarters, Mar Vista, and Metro Centers.At Mar Vista, specialized services are provided toadolescents, with a particular focus on family inter-vention. At Berendo Middle School, we providestudents with drug, alcohol and other substanceabuse counseling in a group environment. Socialskills coaching, anger management, and goal settingare just some tools used to help students addresstheir substance abuse problems.

Residential Treatment (Via Avanta)We offer long-term substance abuse, mentalhealth, and domestic violence treatment to womenin a safe, supportive, communal living environment.Children up to age six can live with their motherswhile the mothers are in treatment. The childrenparticipate in developmentally appropriate activities,while mothers attend parenting classes, improvelife and job skills, and participate in group therapy.

Assistance to AbductedChildren and their FamiliesDidi Hirsch is a founding member of the Los AngelesChild Abduction Task Force, a multidisciplinary teamwhich includes the Los Angeles County Departmentof Child and Family Services, the Los Angeles CityDistrict Attorney’s Office, local law enforcementbureaus, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Thetask force works to find, reunite, and counsel childrenand families who have been affected by abduction.

CalWORKsWe provide assessment and mental healthtreatment for people on public assistance, througha state program that helps reduce the barriersto employment and increase self-sufficiency.

Child AlertThis program offers specialized mental health servicesfor children who have experienced or are at riskof physical, sexual, or emotional abuse or neglect.The program helps children and families to copewith the resulting problems, and also to preventfurther instances of abuse. We provide outpatientservices including assessment, individual, group,and family psychotherapy, parenting educationgroups, psychiatric medication management,and case management for children and parents.

Outpatient Mental HealthServices for Children and FamiliesPrograms at our headquarters, Metro, Inglewood,Mar Vista and S. Mark Taper Foundation Centersprovide outpatient mental health services tochildren and youth experiencing depression,anxiety, psychosis, attention deficit/hyperactivitydisorder, child abuse, delinquency, and/or otherissues. Our trained mental health staff providesindividual, group, and family therapy, as well ascase management and medication management.

Parenting EducationThe Center offers classes to the community, andespecially to teen parents, that incorporate informationon positive and effective discipline techniques,child development, anger management, andcommunity resources.

System of Care ProgramSystem of Care serves children and families who areinvolved with multiple social service systems andneed intensive mental health services. Therapistswork with families in their homes, schools and othercommunity locations, and regularly coordinate carewith child welfare workers, teachers, probationofficers and others involved with the family.

School-based ServicesWe provide mental health services to children andteens at 18 schools in six school districts in the coun-ty. To prevent the development of further emotionaland behavioral problems and help increase a child’schance of success in the classroom, therapists workclosely with teachers to provide early intervention.

Although our community has grown increasingly open about mental illness, we still have far to go to erase stigma.To shine light on the issue, in 1997 Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center hosted its first Erasing the StigmaLeadership Awards, honoring Tipper Gore in recognition of her candid discussion of mental illness and its cost to allof us. In the past decade, we have honored researchers and physicians, actors and writers, leaders and activists,for their significant contributions to the field of mental health and for helping to erase the stigma of mental illness.

This past year’s Awards, held on Friday, May 12, 2006 at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons, celebrated the 10th year oferasing the stigma. Our honorees - novelist Bebe Moore Campbell and Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez - havehelped millions of readers understand that individuals with mental illness are part of a family, part of our family.They have shown us that their life stories are far richer than the illnesses that often define them.

2005 Alive & Running for Suicide Prevention 5K/10KIn an effort to increase awareness about the devastating impact of suicide in our community, in 1998 Didi Hirschlaunched its annual Alive & Running for Suicide Prevention 5K/10K.

The seventh annual race, which was held on Sunday, October 2, 2005, brought together more than 2,500 runners,walkers, spectators, and volunteers, including runners from Students Run LA. An afterschool intervention program,Students Run LA provides training and mentoring to prepare thousands of middle and high schoolers to completethe Los Angeles Marathon. Their participation was especially meaningful because suicide is the third leading causeof death among 15-24 year olds.

In addition to Students Run LA, people from all walks of life participated in the race, including actor Dan Butler whoserved as emcee. Many survivors led teams, as an opportunity for friends and family to collectively remember aloved one lost to suicide, but also as a way to help raise funds for Didi Hirsch’s suicide prevention programs. Survivorsalso memorialized their loved ones through banners, unique shirts and bibs while courageously sharing personalstories with the hope of creating discourse about suicide and breaking the stigma that silences so many families.

Novelist Bebe Moore Campbell, whose best-selling books includedBrothers and Sisters, Singing in the Comeback Choir, What You Owe Me,and Your Blues Ain't Like Mine, died November 26, 2006 in Los Angeles

from complications related to brain cancer. She was 56.

In 72 Hour Hold and Sometimes My Mommy Gets Angry, Ms. Campbellused her gift as a writer to promote discussion of a problem that affects

one in five Americans each year. In fact, because of her outstandingadvocacy on behalf of those suffering from mental illnesses,

Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center honored her withan Erasing the Stigma Leadership Award this past spring.

Also an activist, Ms. Campbell helped found the National Alliance for theMentally Ill – Urban Los Angeles Chapter, which provides critical servicesand support groups to families in the South Los Angeles community.

She will be greatly missed.
