Society Comparison Chart
DIRECTIONS: Based on the chapters we have read in The Giver , it is apparent and
obvious that the Community that Jonas lives in is very different than our own society. On the
opposite side of this sheet, you will see a chart. We will use it to “chart” our understanding
of the differences between the Community and our society in regard to Family, School,
Social Life, and Personal Life. You may use bullet points to sum up your thoughts. When
your chart is finished, write a short paragraph comparing the societies below.

Before the “Sameness” Activity
Rules. Regulations. Sameness. How did the Community in The Giver get this way? Wasthere a civil war? Did people fight to be the same? Did anyone try to promote individuality? This
is your chance to do some creative writing. Use your imagination to describe the Community
before the Sameness and what events occurred that led to the intense government control and
lack of individuality. Your story must have the following:
● At least one character (you may use first person or third person narration)
● A description of the Community before the Sameness and the events leading up to the
changes we see in Jonas’ world
Aside from these rules, you are free to be as creative as possible!

Cross The Line Activity
Introduction
We live in a diverse world. In this exercise we will explore the diversity among us by thinking
about our values, our backgrounds, our teachers, and our experiences. We might even discover that this fairly group is much more diverse than any of you would assume. We might even
discover that you have things in common with this group that you never would have guessed.
This activity will involve labeling and personalizing some of this diversity. This personalization
might prove uncomfortable at times. Eventually, however, it might empower us to break down
some of the stereotypes and assumptions that we, as a product of our cultures, experiences,
and lives hold.
Instructions
Ask everyone to gather on one side of the room/line and face towards its center.
Call out specific categories/labels/descriptions, and ask that all of those to whom this applies,
walk to the other side of the room/line.
For example, I might request that anyone with glasses please cross the room. If this describes
you and you feel comfortable acknowledging it, you would walk to this side of the room/line.
Once there, turn and face the crowd you just left. Get in touch with your feelings and think
about those people on both sides, then return to the side you started from. After a few seconds, I
will continue with a new question.
Remember, there is no pressure to cross the room/line if you don’t feel comfortable doing so.You will need to make that decision.
At the conclusion of the activity, we will discuss what we felt and what we learned. There may be
times when this activity makes you feel slightly uncomfortable. I would urge you to lean into that
discomfort since it may mean that you are about to gain an important learning or insight.
Ground Rules
There are two important ground rules to this activity.
1. The first involves listening. Let’s have silence throughout the exercise no talking, snickering, giggling, nonverbal messages.
2. It is imperative that we respect the dignity of each person who is here. All that is shared should
remain confidential nothing that is offered should leave this room. However, if after the workshop
you really need to talk to a particular person, be sure to ask his/her permission.

Fishbowl Discussion: The Importance and Value of Memory
We have been discussing the importance and value of memory as a theme in The Giver ,and I am sure you all have different thoughts about what this theme means both within and
outside of the book. In order to get these thoughts out and have our voices heard, we are going
to have a Fishbowl Discussion in class. What is a Fishbowl? I will help you GRASP the
concept:
● Goal: The goal of a Fishbowl Discussion is to allow you to freely express your ideas with
your classmates. For our memory discussion, I want you to take some time to examine
how you feel about memory and its importance so you can better understand how it
functions in and outside of The Giver .
● Role: Your role for the Fishbowl will be that of a theme explorer. You need to dig up
memories: happy memories, sad memories, and your thoughts about them in order tosolve our theme mystery. How do your experiences match or differ from Jonas’? Why
does it matter?
● Audience: Your audience for the Fishbowl will be your classmates, your teachers, and
maybe even the world! We want to know how you understand memory, or how your own
experiences fall into the puzzle of this theme.
● Scenario: We will have 5 chairs in a circle (the Fishbowl), with the rest of the class
surrounding them. 4 people will start in the middle and answer some questions about
memory as a theme. At any time, someone from the surrounding group may sit in the
empty chair, and then someone else must leave the circle. There must be 4 people in the
bowl at all times!● Performance: EVERYONE must enter the bowl at least once! I want to know what you
know about this theme! Show me your thinking while you are discussing with your
classmates.
Got it? Good! Here’s how I’ll be looking at the discussion for assessment purposes...
Did I enter the Fishbowl atleast one time?
Yes (5) or No (0) /5
Did I say something to further the discussion, make a
connection, or explore whatthe theme means?
Yes (5) or Somewhat (3) or No (0)
/5
Was I quiet and observantwhile on the outside of the
bowl? Did I build off of othersideas once I entered the
bowl?
Yes (5) or Somewhat (3) or No (0)
/5

Here are some questions to think about for our discussion, and space to jot down thoughts and
ideas.
● Why are memories important?
● What role does memory play in the book?
● What emotions do we associate with memories?● Are painful memories just as valuable as joyful memories?
● How is the importance or value of memory a theme in The Giver ?
● Are all memories shared memories? Do our memories become part of the “human
experience?”
● Do some memories have priority over others? Which ones?
● Are our memories important? Why?
