OUR MISSION AND PROGRAM

CSFB is Baltimore’s only need-based, non-denominational

program providing low-income Baltimore City families with

tuition assistance for their children to attend K – 8th grade

at the private school of their choice.

• CSFB provided tuition assistance to 230 students in

FY 2013 (July 2012-June 2013).

• CSFB scholars attended 50 schools.

• Scholarships are partial with families paying a minimum of

$500 per year of tuition.

• Every family who received a scholarship from CSFB

is below the median income level. Most of our families also

qualify for free and reduced lunch programs.

• All students from a family randomly selected from our waiting

list are eligible for tuition assistance.

“ People should give to CSFB because they are helping

families and children build a better future by giving

them a rewarding education. ”

– MIRANDA, CSFB ALUMNA

CSFB IS…IMPROVING GRADUATION RATES & TEST SCORES

In Baltimore, data from an independent study conducted with funding from

The Friedman Foundation measured high school graduation rates and college

attendance rates of CSFB scholars. A few of the statistical highlights include a

97% high school graduation rate and a 84% college attendance rate.

On a national level, CSF Scholars are more likely to graduate from high school than

their public school peers, as demonstrated by studies in the Bay Area, Charlotte,

Denver, and Philadelphia.

Studies of CSF Scholars in Baltimore, Charlotte, Los Angeles, Memphis, and

Philadelphia found their test scores were higher than those of their counterparts in

nearby public schools.

COST-EFFECTIVE PHILANTHROPY

The independent schools CSF Scholars attend typically spend one-third to one-half

what neighboring public schools spend per student, often with much better results.

CSF scholarships demonstrate that a relatively small philanthropic investment,

combined with a contribution from the parent, can provide a private school

education and a better chance of graduating from high school.

HELPING TO CLOSE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP

Harvard University evaluations of the CSF program in three cities (New York,

Washington, DC, and Dayton) showed that scholarships narrow the achievement

gap between Black and White students in math and reading by about one-half.
