It’s not every day that a meeting of college trustees makes the pages of The Wall Street Journal. But the June 6th meeting of the Hunter College Foundation was one for the ages. After retiring Foundation Chair Klara Silverstein (‘54, MA’56) said her goodbyes, Hunter President Jennifer J. Raab made an announcement of her own: Klara’s husband, Larry, had pledged a $5 million gift to create the Klara and Larry Silverstein Student Success Center on the seventh floor of the Hunter College Library. President Raab then presented not only detailed renderings of the proposed student center but also Larry himself, who, along with several other family members, had sneaked into the back of the room minutes before.
“I’ve never been so surprised or moved in my life,” said Klara. “I was sad to say goodbye, but Larry and Jennifer sure knew how to brighten my day.”
Since Klara had long been instrumental in raising funds for the major library renovation now underway, it was hard to keep word of her husband’s gift from leaking beyond the president’s office door before the surprise announcement. “No one has been a bigger
advocate for our new library than Klara, so keeping the secret was no easy task,” Raab admitted.
Like all of the Silversteins’ contributions to Hunter – from Klara’s service on the board to the couple's many generous student scholarships and their ongoing support for an endowed dean at the School of Education – this gift will transform the lives of Hunter students. The Success Center will provide a beautiful space for students and faculty members to gather for work, study and collaboration – a priceless resource for a commuter school like Hunter. Its value is something Klara understands all too well.
“I loved being a Hunter student, but I remember how hard it could be to find a quiet place on campus to work and meet with friends,” she said. “I couldn’t be prouder to have my name and Larry’s attached to the new center.”

Right: Ada and Romano I. Peluso
From the College’s main library to Roosevelt House, Hunter is benefiting immensely from the generous philanthropy of Foundation Board member Ada Peluso (’60) and her brother, Romano I. Peluso.
The Pelusos’ deep commitment to the College involves two generations of their close-knit, highly accomplished family. When Ada and Romano made their latest gifts to Hunter in honor of their mother, Assunta, and their father, Ignazio, they noted that their support for Hunter and other institutions dedicated to education and enlightenment had been inspired by the lives and values of their late parents. Both parents held doctoral degrees, and they passed on to Ada and Romano an enduring love and appreciation for learning and culture. “Our home was always filled with books, art and music,” Ada said.
Ignazio Peluso was a diplomat who served with the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations, and he and his wife instilled a strong sense of civic responsibility in their children.
Ada and Romano already had an extraordinary record of support and service to the College when they decided to make three transformative new gifts. Two of those gifts, from Ada and Romano together, provide $1.1 million for programs and facilities at the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute. The third gift, from Ada, supports the main library renovation project by providing $500,000 for the creation of a new faculty center. There, for the first time, Hunter’s

faculty will have their own digitally equipped library space for reading, research, writing, class preparation and collaboration with peers.
Ada was a professor of mathematics at the College for more than 44 years, and served as department chair for the 11 years preceding her retirement in 2010. Since then she has served as a Foundation trustee. Today she also devotes her time and expertise to several College committees, and to helping shape student-focused math initiatives at Manhattan Hunter Science and Hunter College High Schools. In addition to all she has contributed to her alma mater, Ada has also recruited her brother to work on Hunter’s behalf. A retired trust banker and an award-winning financial writer for the American Bankers Association, Romano is now a member of the Roosevelt House External Advisory Board.
In recognition of the Pelusos’ generosity and the entire family’s legacy, the Hunter library’s new space will be named The Ada, Assunta, Ignazio and Romano I. Peluso Faculty Center. At Roosevelt House, the plaques beside the renovated FDR Library and restored staircase will be inscribed as permanent memorials to Assunta and Ignazio.
Artist renderings shown: The Klara and Larry Silverstein Student Success Center will include an auditorium and study spaces for group and individual work on the library's 7th floor.
From the PresidentThis school year marks a new era at Hunter, one made possible by the remarkable gifts
you’ll read about in these pages. The range of the gifts is matched only by the generosity
and creativity of the donors, who regularly astonish us with the new and exciting ways
they express their commitment to the College. We are tremendously grateful to them
and to everyone whose gifts to Hunter enable us to raise the bar of public higher education
year after year.
Every one of our donors truly understands the mission of Hunter College, honoring it
Hunter College Library Campaign
The library has always been the heart of an academic institution. While it continues to play that vital role, the Internet and digital information technology have radically changed the library in form and function. Students now rely upon their college library not only as a source of books, but also as a hub where they can meet to conduct research, discuss course work and collaborate on projects. At Hunter, most students commute and have work and family obligations, making the library an especially critical gathering place where learning and discussion continue outside the classroom. To continue to fulfill its academic mission, and to reflect its dynamic, unparalleled growth during the past decade, Hunter has launched a $45 million campaign to renovate and completely transform its library over the next four years.
with dedication to our students and pace-setting financial support. Perhaps no one has taken the mission
to heart more than Klara Silverstein, whom we celebrate not only for the transformational gift that she and
her husband have made to our most vital current project – the renovation of the Hunter library – but also for
her decades of service to the College, especially her 11 years as chair of the Hunter College Foundation Board
of Trustees. It has been my privilege to get to know Klara as a valued colleague and friend whose energy,
charisma, and dedication are inspiring. The transformation of Hunter over the last decade, particularly our
revitalized culture of fundraising and alumni participation, would not have been possible without Klara. Her
legacy will be embodied beautifully by the Klara and Larry Silverstein Student Success Center (see page 1).
Klara’s departure as chair of the Foundation is bittersweet. Though we will miss seeing her on a day-to-day
basis, we know she will continue to play an active role as a member of the board. And we know that in Lisa
Witten ('81), we have found an outstanding successor. With her husband, Richard Witten, Lisa has been an
extraordinary supporter of Hunter for many years. Their generosity to the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter
has helped us turn Macaulay into a model for honors programs, and Lisa is energetically spearheading
Hunter’s library campaign. Lisa is one of the countless Hunter supporters who have made it possible for
Hunter to grow exponentially with exciting new programs and buildings, a continual rise in national college
rankings, greatly expanded scholarship opportunities, and much more – all a testament to how essential
private support is to the realization of our public mission. As we offer Klara our thanks and our wishes for a
wonderful retirement, we offer Lisa our heartfelt welcome, knowing the Foundation is in good hands and that
Hunter, with the help of our devoted alumni and friends, will keep getting better and better.

Kryger Funds Honors College CenterAn early rendering of the Macaulay Honors Study Center hangs in the apartment of Dorothy Kryger (’45), who donated $300,000 to Hunter to create this future library space. Kryger also supports Hunter’s Macaulay Honors College Scholars with an annual award recognizing a graduating senior’s service to Hunter, and with funding for academic field trips and workshops. “The students are outstanding,” she said.
Kryger, who skipped two grades in her Bronx elementary school and one grade in junior high, graduated from high school at 15. After receiving her bachelor’s at 19, she began teaching at Forest Hills High School. The week she started teaching, she married Lawrence Kryger, who had first caught her eye when she was 10 and glanced his way in their junior high schoolyard. They raised a family while he built a textile firm and she earned a master’s at Columbia and continued to teach; they were married for 62 years when he died in 2007.
The Dorothy Kryger Award winner in 2012 was David Weinberger (’12), who majored in political science with a minor in public policy and is now a New York City Urban Fellow—a highly selective position. Before graduating, Weinberger was a leader at the Hunter chapter of the Roosevelt Institute Campus Network, a national student-run organization, and completed internships at the U.S. State Department, The Empire State Development Corporation, the Democratic National Committee, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
A Library for the 21st Century.
The renovated Hunter library will have a special center to enhance education in the sciences, beyond the classroom and laboratory. Like other libraries around the country, Hunter will be moving many of its learning centers into the main library, creating a state-of-the-art center in a welcoming atmosphere.
Thanks to a $350,000 gift from the Skirball Foundation, the centerpiece will be the science learning center where individuals and groups will find attractive, convenient, well-equipped and well-staffed spaces in which students can work and engage with their peers. Comprising numerous computers, texts and multimedia educational resources, the center will also include areas for small-group
Skirball Foundation Funds Science Learning Centerinstruction, review sessions, one-on-one tutoring and online tutoring. The interdisciplinary learning center will provide students with comprehensive and tailored educational support services to improve student success in undergraduate science courses across the spectrum of science disciplines.
“Young people today need a strong scientific grounding to embark on, and succeed in, a large number of careers,” said Marilyn Rothschild, director of the Physical Sciences Learning Center, one of the existing facilities to be incorporated into the planned new center. “Through a variety of programs and activities, this center will offer students the support they need.”
The Bequest Was Just the Beginning:A New Scholarship Results from an Old Friendship
When Dorothy Dall Horowitz (’38) drafted her will, she made Hunter the beneficiary of a $20,000 unrestricted bequest. She also named her attorney— and her friends Mina K. Seeman (’52) and Sydelle Diner— as co-executors, authorizing them to decide who would benefit from her residual estate. Last May, the Hunter College Foundation received a letter from Seeman describing Hunter as “close to Dorothy’s heart” and enclosing a $100,000 check.
That second gift from the estate established the Dorothy Dall Horowitz Scholarship for Hunter students majoring in English. Seeman’s letter noted that Horowitz had taught English to
homebound students via the Board of Education radio station WNYE, and that Horowitz had a lifelong interest in education. Seeman was Horowitz’s friend for almost half a century and oversaw her end-of-life care. Horowitz’s husband died in 2008.
Seeman said that when the executors made their decisions, “We only concentrated on what would be important to Dorothy and her husband. We really tried to be in their heads.” She added, “I knew what Dorothy’s feelings were for Hunter, and what mine are. And because she was an English teacher, I thought the scholarship for English majors was the way to go.”
Mina K. Seeman, left, and Sydelle Diner with plaque noting Dorothy Horowitz's name.
Like Dorothy Horowitz, many alumni and friends of the College think of Hunter when writing
their will.
Planned giving is an ideal way for individuals at all levels of income and wealth to provide future
support for Hunter. Whether one’s resources are limited or abundant, arranging a meaningful
bequest will bring great satisfaction and no personal financial hardship or uncertainty.
As you write your will and reflect on beloved individuals and institutions, you can choose from
various ways of naming the Hunter College Foundation as a beneficiary. One option is a general
bequest, giving Hunter a fixed, exact sum; a second option is a percentage bequest, assigning
Hunter a relative portion of your estate; and a third option is a residual bequest, granting Hunter
the remainder of the estate after all other obligations are met.
Or you may choose to make a planned gift that offers you immediate financial benefits. A gift annuity
or another charitable financial vehicle will likely bring guaranteed lifelong income with tax advantages.
The Thomas Hunter Society honors those who have included the Hunter College Foundation in
their estate plans. Membership is offered to benefactors once they send notification that they have
named the Foundation in their will or as a beneficiary of their retirement plan, life-insurance policy,
trust or charitable gift annuity.

Innovative Young Artist Wins Inaugural C12 Emerging Artist Fellowship
sketched by amateurs whom Aozaki stopped on the street to ask for directions. The work covered a large wall in Hunter’s Times Square Gallery.
The new fellowship was established through a generous contribution to Hunter from C12 Capital Management, an alternative asset manager that maintains a wide-ranging collection of contemporary art.
Hunter’s Department of Art, which offers both graduate and undergraduate programs, is regarded as one of the leading art programs in the country. In its 2012 rankings of graduate schools, U. S. News & World Report ranked Hunter’s MFA program 13th in the nation, and its painting and drawing program seventh.
“We’re so grateful that C12 Capital Management has the foresight to support our future artists,” said Hunter President Jennifer J. Raab. “Our talented studio art graduates have a unique opportunity to participate in a program that allows a young artist to progress creatively for a full year without financial worry.”

Thirty-four-year-old Nobutaka Aozaki (MFA'12), a seriously playful artist whose works include a clock with multiple hands and a collage map of Manhattan, is the inaugural winner of the C12 Emerging Artist Fellowship, a new award established by Hunter and C12 Capital Management to launch the careers of emerging artists.
The fellowship, which includes a $25,000 grant and an exhibition, will be awarded each semester to a new graduate of Hunter’s MFA in studio art program. The grant will help the fellowship winner pay for such essentials as studio space, materials, travel and application fees for exhibitions, and the cost of creating or maintaining a website.
“The C12 Emerging Artist Fellowship will ultimately help the young artist make the transition from graduate student to professional artist,” said Carol Goldberg (’56), an art consultant and the chair of Hunter’s Art Advisory Board. Aozaki's work pays homage to the likes of Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, utilizing some of their pieces while questioning what it means to collaborate and, moreover, what it means to be an artist. His hand-drawn collage map of Manhattan, a prime example of his collaborative method, is made up of parts

Powers said that when he received the news of his selection, “It almost felt like I was winning an Oscar for academics.”

Roosevelt House Supporters Underwrite DocumentaryThe Hunter community is very grateful to two generous supporters for underwriting the creation of a documentary produced for public television chronicling the history of Roosevelt House.
Michael Gellert, chair of the Roosevelt House External Advisory Board, and Corinne Barsky, a benefactor and regular attendee of Roosevelt House events, supported WNET's production of Treasures of New York: Roosevelt House. The film explores the history and recent renovation of the townhouse that was once the home of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and is now the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College. Their generosity was celebrated at a special screening of the documentary at Roosevelt House on October 20.
Treasures of New York: Roosevelt House includes interviews with members of the class of 1942, and can still be enjoyed on public television and online. had endowed both a professorship in art and a multimedia lecture hall before endowing the Evelyn Kranes Kossak Painting Program. She recently provided further support for the painting program with a major new gift.
Her original gift endowing the painting program enabled Hunter to bring renowned artist and scholar Drew Beattie to the College as the Evelyn Kranes Kossak Distinguished Lecturer. Beattie taught at Harvard before filling the new Hunter post, in which he works closely with undergraduates and oversees all aspects of the painting programs supported by Kossak.
Kossak herself majored in art at Hunter, and then worked with her husband to found and build Jolen Inc., a hugely successful cosmetics company. Her support enables Hunter to subsidize the cost of materials for every student taking painting courses at Hunter, and to offer Kossak Painting Fellowships to undergraduates.
Each fellow receives a generous stipend for supplies, plus the chance to discuss his or her work in weekly critique sessions with some of the most highly respected painters working today.
“Many of these visiting painters do not normally teach,” Beattie said. “The 12 internationally recognized painters who came to Hunter this past spring are a group that no other school in the country could boast in one semester. Evelyn Kossak’s vision of specific support for painting is a fresh model of what private giving can do to enhance public education. For promising students who would not otherwise be able to pursue art so ambitiously, the Kossak Painting Program is the opportunity to realize a transformational dream.”

Scholarship & Welfare FundWhen Scholarship and Welfare was established in 1949, there was no tuition and no charge for textbooks at Hunter, yet there were students who needed assistance in order to attend the College. Today, the financial pressures are even greater. Many students are heads of households. The majority hold at least one job; some hold two or more. Yet they are determined to graduate. Commencement rolls are filled with those who are the first in their family to finish college — a Hunter tradition familiar to many of us.
With your support we will continue to help worthy students for years to come; they will always be here and so will we. On behalf of the hundreds of students who have benefited from your generosity and concern, we thank you.

In 1994, Hunter College established the Thomas Hunter Society to honor, memorialize, and thank those alumni and friends of Hunter who have included the College in their estate planning. If you have
already named the Hunter College Foundation (the legal entity that should receive the bequest) in your will, please let us know so we may have the opportunity to thank you personally. It will be our privilege to add your name to the growing list of members whose support, dedication, and foresight are helping to ensure Hunter College’s standard of excellence for generations to come. For more information and assistance in planning your bequest to the Hunter College Foundation, please contact Institutional Advancement at Hunter College: phone 212.772.4085; fax 212.772.4074.

Mother's Day Scholarships Honor Hunter Women Across Generations Right: Donor Frederick P. Schaffer and Scholar Pavlina Nenin
On Mother’s Day, May 13, 2012, a two-page spread in The New York Times listed major contributors to the Mother’s Day Scholarship Fund along with the Hunter women they had honored. In the seven years since its inception, the Fund has raised more than $3 million, resulting in 1,000-plus scholarships for some of Hunter’s brightest students.
One recent beneficiary of a Mother's Day Scholarship was Pavlina Nenin ('12)
– herself a new mother – who earned a BA/MA in economics with a minor in mathematics. Pavlina, who was born in Bulgaria, plans to pursue a career in economic research and analysis, with the goal of fostering urban development. Her scholarship was donated by Frederick Schaffer, CUNY's general counsel and senior vice chancellor for legal affairs, in loving memory of his mother, Geraldine Kosh Schaffer ('33). Since the Mother’s Day Scholarships brought them together, Schaffer has become a mentor to Pavlina and has been included in many joyous occasions in Pavlina’s life.
