Football Gala Day Report

A few weeks ago the Gladstone Views football team took part in the District Football Gala day. The squad was excited about playing other teams in the district. Fortunately the rain held off and it was a close to perfect day for footy. The players walked down to Jacana Reserve and were met by Mr Hatton who volunteered to be the Gladstone Views team coach for the day. The first couple of games were against Westmeadows and Aitken College both of which had been premiers in the past. The GVPS team knew they were in for two hard games. The players took up their position on the field, ready to do their best. Unfortunately both teams were too strong and Gladstone Views was unable to come away with a win. However the team enjoyed the opportunity to take part in the day and had the opportunity to watch the Grand Final between Westmeadows and Aitken College. Jake H. was awarded the medal for best player for the Gladstone Views team. We would really like to thank Mr Hatton for giving up his time and coaching the team on the day and thank you also to the parents who came to support the players.

District Summer Finals

Friday May 30th was the date for the District Grand Finals where the teams who finished in first and second position played off for the Premiership Pennant. Gladstone Views managed to get two teams into the finals this year. The Girls’ Basketball team and the Open Volleyball team. The Open Volleyball team played two close scoring sets against Gladstone Park P.S. However Gladstone Park managed to win both sets and were Volleyball Premiers for 2014. The Girls’ Basketball team had a very tough game against Westmeadows P.S. Westmeadows won the game but the girls put in a competitive performance. The Girls’ Basketball team would like to thank Mr Woolcock, Ms Donaldson and Mr Cliff for training the team and getting the girls ready for the finals.

I am so excited to start the gold panning! The water is flowing as fast as a cheetah. I am using a shovel…..Wait! What’s this? Gold! Yes a gold speck! I found it in the pan. Oh, wow! I am buying a bottle to put it in. To pan for gold I had to get some water, stones and sand from the creek and then swirl it all around in the pan. When you swirl, you get rid of all the useless rocks, pebbles and sand. If you do it correctly, you could find gold. Amazing! But you need to be patient Lachlan 5/6C.

I was passing by and walking into an antique and vintage shop. All the dresses were beautifully designed with delicate fabrics. In the windows were divine antiques waiting to be noticed by strangers passing by. There were cups and saucers and tea pots. They were displayed wonderfully and were without any trace of a mistake in the designs and without cracks anywhere. Janny 5/C

It was a grey day with a bit of blue sky but that did not stop us from going to Sovereign Hill. Early that afternoon my group went on the Red Hill Mine Tour. It was something unique to all of us and a great experience. We started and our hearts were pounding because we were so excited. The mine tour began under a mine cart railway with decent sized wooden towers allowing the carts to go through. However, the carts weren’t used anymore. Under the two towers was our group and some stairs leading downwards. It was damp and muddy with a voice guiding us through the mine. A hologram film took place showing us what it was like to be a miner. We saw the second biggest nugget in Australia which was over a million dollars. Our chests thumped as we climbed up the steps in awe of seeing a magnificent gold nugget. We reached the top impressed with what we had experienced. The feeling of the darkness crept through all of us convincing us to do it again. Philip 5/6C

There we saw them; four majestic creatures hauling a carriage along the rough Main Street terrain. The magnificent horses did this with ease, the heavy carriage no match for their Clydesdale strength. As they reached their stop we boarded the carriage. With great excitement we took a comfortable seat on some old fashioned black leather seats. Our hearts filled with glee as the carriage started to move. Hooves trotted and clicked against the dry road as the carriage bumped up and down. We admired the stores and waved to the locals. Slowly our carriage was hauled up a hill. It was quite scary, considering it felt like at any moment our carriage had a chance to detach from the horses. The three of us swapped seats to get a feel of everything. We stuck our heads out of the windows like dogs in a car. As the horses lead us past the gold panning area and then back into the 1800s imagining we were wealthy diggers entering the town. But unfortunately, soon enough the carriage stopped. It was at its finishing stop. Disappointed but cheerful we hopped off the carriage. This was definitely an experience to remember. Lani 5/6C

Sound and Light Show – The Burning Hotel

After we excitedly hopped off the modern carriage like vehicle, we raced inside the warm, insulated room. We took our seats as we were overjoyed that it was warm and toasty; unlike the Arctic weather outside. But all of a sudden the wall we were facing slid open. It wasn’t so toasty anymore! There were tents (where the miners lived when the gold rushes started in Australia), police tents and many more living facilities that were used in the 1850s. But the best scene during the entire show was the burning hotel. The 10 000 miners were so livid about the hotel owner getting away with the murder of one of their fellow miners, they burnt down his hotel. It looked so amazingly real! The fire raged through the building as it began to go up in smoke. It was breathtaking. Elizabeth 5/6C

The Gold Pour

We sat down on the dark seats and waited for the demonstration to start. The gold pourer came out in an ebony apron and charcoal gloves that went from his fingers to his elbows. When the furnace had reached 1 200 degrees Celsius, the gold pourer got this metal clamp that could handle being placed into the 1 200 degree Celsius fire. He placed the metal cup on the bench and poured the liquid gold into a rectangular mould shape. About ten seconds later the gold pourer tipped the gold out and it was moulded into that shape. He then placed it into the water and it sizzled until it cooled. The gold had reached a temperature which was now safe to hold. Ebony 5/6C
