Title: Cause & Effect Diamante Poetry
GLCE: W.GN.07.01; W.SP.07.01

Our lives are based on cause/effect relationships. These experiences have taught us lessons about the world we live in and how we should behave. What have the events in your life taught you about the world you live in? You may choose one of the following ways to write about cause/effect: (40 pts.)
1. Write a letter explaining an event in your life that caused positive effects.
2. Write a narrative about a negative effect (mistake) that has taught you a life lesson.
3. Write a persuasive piece to someone about what they should/shouldn’t do in order to shape their lives.
Write your own Diamante Poem and present it in a 3‐D format.
25 pts.
Work with a partner to create a diamante poem using magnetic words.
25 pts.
Write a diamante poem by playing “Pass the Pigs.”
25 pts.
Day 1:
Complete the Cause/Effect questioning frames.
10 pts.
Write 5 intermediate/challenge examples.

Day 3: Write the definition of a diamante poem on sentence strips.

Make a poster of the definition of a diamante poem.

Day 2:
Write 5 introductory/ intermediate examples
10 pts.
Each student must accumulate 100 points in this unit. Items in bold print are required others are student choice as to which items to complete.
C Layer:
Day 1: 1. Begin the lesson by asking students what they know about cause and effect. Pass out the cause & effect definition sheets. Discuss the definitions of cause & effect with students
Brainstorm a list of cause and effect statements with students and record them on chart paper or overhead transparency. Your students may be able to generate examples on their own, or you may
want to use some of the examples from the Tiered Cause and Effect Examples. Have students work in pairs to complete the Cause & Effect questioning frames.
Day 2: Review Cause & Effect frames from the previous day. Show students the examples of introductory, intermediate and challenging cause & effect statements. Students may then choose to come up with 5 statements of their own at their preferred level.
Day 3: Introduce the format of a diamante poem. Show students several examples of this type of poetry. Discuss how this is cause & effect. Work as a whole class to write a diamante poem. Students will then have a choice of making a 3‐D diamond using the definition of a diamante poem OR writing the definition on sentence strips, testing themselves to put the lines in the correct order.
**Students will also have the choice of beginning to read from the novel Out of the Dust. Students will read short sections of the book and answer comprehension questions over that part of the book.
B Layer: Students must do at least one of the following
1. Build a 3‐D diamond (instructions available in class). Write your own diamante poem and attach it to the diamond.
2. Write a diamante poem using magnetic words. Share this with a partner. Record it in your writer’s notebook.
3. Write a diamante poem by playing “Pass the Pig.” Directions will be given in class about how this is done.
A Layer: ALL students must do this layer. Writing on Demand (WOD)—Students will write a paper answering one of the questions about life lessons.
