Go Gophers!

April 4, 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week, the trees are blooming in the courtyard and our students are enjoying the promise of spring. The first phase of our renovation project has been completed. Students and teachers returned from Spring Break to new, state of the art classrooms on the first floor of the Media Building. The new hallway of classrooms is a tremendous improvement to our students’ learning environment.

Spring sports have begun. It is truly a pleasure to see our young athletes in uniform for their first lacrosse, baseball, bocce, tennis or track events. Gopher Pride is everywhere on campus this spring!

This is a time of great anticipation for our Seniors who are looking forward to the excitement of prom and graduation. Prom tickets are on sale at lunch and the hallways are abuzz with discussions of the latest “Promposal.” Prom will be held on Friday, May 6 at the BWI Hilton. Graduation will be held on Tuesday, May 31st at the Prince George’s Equestrian Center.

On Monday, April 11, the third marking period will close and students will be given an early dismissal day. This week, students are working hard to improve their report card grades. One of Superintendent George Arlotto’s areas of focus is ensuring that all current 9th grades are successfully promoted to 10th grade. CHECKING INTO GBHS

“The safety of all students and staff in Anne Arundel County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all

of us. Our school is utilizing a system for checking in all visitors. The system is called V Soft by

RaptorWare. When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present a government-

issued photo ID to a staff person in the school lobby. This card will be scanned and the following

information will be collected: Your photo, your name, and your date of birth. This information will be utilized to check you

in, create an ID badge, and compare your information against sexual offender databases throughout the country. If your

name appears on any of the lists or you refuse to allow the school to scan your ID, you will not be allowed access to the

school. The only alternative will be to allow the school to see your ID, verify your first name, last name, and date of birth to

be entered into the system manually. However, this method does not store the information and you must do this each time

you visit the school. If you do have your ID scanned, you will only be asked to show your ID on future visits and your name

will be selected from an existing list of previous visitors. You will also be asked to check out with the office upon leaving

the school so that we know you are no longer in the building. You will be required to check into the system even if you are

only coming to school to pick up your child. The information collected will not be shared outside of the school and is kept

on a secure server. Your assistance in keeping our students safe is appreciated.”

SENIOR FINAL EXAMS:

High School Assessments are May 23rd through June 10th. Seniors must determine whether they need to take one of the assessments, which will begin each day at 7:17 AM. Graduation will be denied any senior still needing to take a High School Assessment.

Senior exams begin on May 23nd, 2016. The regular school-day schedule will be followed. Senior exams will be administered during the regularly scheduled period time.

PARTICIPATION IN COMMENCEMENT

The Commencement Ceremony is intended to recognize those seniors who have completed all requirements for a Maryland High School Diploma. Any senior who does not meet all requirements will not be permitted to take part in Commencement.

WHAT GRADUATES SHOULD WEAR

The Class of 2016 has elected to wear red and white academic gowns and mortarboards. The traditional gown is worn over regular dress clothing. All seniors must order a gown this year because the texture is different from that used previously.

Anyone who needs a cap and gown may pick up a form in the main office or go to www.Balfour.com. Cap and Gowns are

$45.00. The cost after May 1st is $60.00. Cash or checks made out to Balfour.

MEN: Dark dress type trousers (NO JEANS OR SHORTS), dress shirts with necktie, and dress type shoes (NO SNEAK-ERS OR SANDALS).

WOMEN: Comfortable, plain dress, low heel shoes to compliment. Bold patterned dresses will show through the academic gown. PLEASE DO NOT BRING A PURSE TO THE CEREMONY AS THERE IS NO PROVISION FOR SECUR-ING THEM.

Seniors may carry the gown and mortarboard to the assembly area. Staff members will be available to assist with the gowning at the assembly area.

In keeping with the Commencement tradition, the administrative staff and platform guests will wear academic regalia.

PARENT NOTIFICATION

To avoid disappointment to seniors and parents the school staff has, since the end of the first semester, reviewed report cards and transcripts and counseled with seniors at risk of not meeting all diploma requirements. In those instances where a senior’s academic performance is uncertain until the last exams, the staff will notify those seniors and parents as quickly as possible when the final grades are known.

Parents are urged to monitor report cards and request a conference if you have questions about your son or daughter s academic standing as a senior. Conferences can be arranged by calling the Guidance Department, 410-761-8950 ext. 219, between 7:30 AM and 2:30 PM on school days.

OBLIGATIONS

Seniors must arrange to clear all obligations with the school before May 25th.

Textbooks and school materials which have been loaned are to be returned. Seniors must return all books and magazines to the Media Center by May 20th, 2016. Media materials needed for school assignments may circulate on an overnight basis. Other obligations to the class, clubs, and teams must also be satisfied by May 20th.

COMMENCEMENT REHEARSAL

Commencement rehearsal has been scheduled for Friday, May 27th, 2016, at 7:30 AM in the auditorium. Participation at rehearsal is a requirement for participation in Commencement.

GUEST TICKETS

Attendance at Commencement is by invitation ticket. Each senior will receive eight tickets at rehearsal. Your graduating senior will be able to tell you on which side of the Show Place Arena they will be seated so that you might choose seating to offer the best view.

GRADUATION VIDEOS

Professional DVDs of graduation will be available for purchase at graduation. Adek Productions will have a booth in the foyer where DVD packages may be purchased. You will receive your order in 4 to 6 weeks. Videos may also be purchased online at www.Celebrate graduation.com or you may contact Adek Productions at 1-800-773-8849.

AUDIENCE DECORUM

Commencement is a joyous occasion for graduates, parents, and guests. In order to recognize the accomplishments of our seniors the dignity of the ceremony must be preserved. Seniors will be reminded of the standards of behavior expected of them as participants during the rehearsals. Any conduct which detracts from the ceremony cannot be allowed. The Show Place Arena has specified NO glass containers, NO balloons, and NO air horns.

As part of the audience, parents and guests also have a responsibility to abide by the rules of common courtesy and decorum. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM COMING ONTO THE MAIN FLOOR TO TAKE PICTURES OR VIDEOS DURING THE CEREMONY. The audience is requested to remain standing in place until all the graduates have left the auditorium.

It is the Commencement Committee’s intent that Commencement 2016 is a memorable event for all involved and your cooperation to ensure this is greatly appreciated.

For the month of April the School Counseling Department is holding a

contest to see which student can submit the most scholarship applications.

When you submit an application make sure to come by the counseling of-

fice to add your name to our scholarship tree. At the end of the month, we

will see which student submitted the most scholarships and that student

will win a gift card. Good luck!

2016 ON LINE MEAL BENEFIT APPLICATION! As you are aware, all students may apply to receive free or reduced-price meals in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. In the past, a paper application was sent home on the first day of school to all students. For the past two years online applications have been accepted. The online process has proven

to be faster for student approval. Therefore, effective August 2016, paper applications will no longer be available for all students. A limited supply of paper applications will be provided for parents/ guardians without access to a computer or smart phone.

Attention Seniors! Would you like extra money to use toward your college tuition?

Did you play Harundale Youth Sports for at least 3 years?

Have you participated in extracurricular activities at Glen Burnie High School for 3 years? If so, come to the counseling office to pick up a Jeffrey Schmidt Scholarship Fund Application. The application must be

postmarked by April 6, 2016.

Senior Contest:

The counseling department is holding a scholarship application submission contest during the month of April to maximize scholarship money for seniors attending college. Every time a student submits a scholarship application they should stop by the counseling office and add their name to the scholarship tree. At the end of the month, we will tally submissions to determine which student submitted the most scholarship applications and will WIN a gift card.

Good-Bye letter from Ms. Rosso!

I would like to thank everyone who has come into my life since I began teaching here at GBHS 44 years ago! I arrived in 1972 as a 21 year old student teacher from UMBC teaching drama, but really wanted to teach dance. Once hired I asked the principal if I could teach dance during the school day for credit and she said write the program and let’s see if anyone signs up. Well, it snowballed into one of the biggest programs in the state! I had to bring in a second dance teacher and expand to two studios. Now, 44 years later I’ve taught over 13,000 students and had the best job in the world! Leaving the dance program in the hands of my former dance student, amazing teacher and friend Stacey Wirth brings me peace and happiness since this was my master plan 10 years ago when I brought her over from North-east High. This ends my career and I send my love to all who have crossed my path over these 44 years at GBHS!

My Love,

Dianne Rosso

TARDY TO CLASS Attention students a new tardy policy is now in effect. After a third tardy you will be required to attend Academic Detention with your teacher on

a Help Day. Four or more tardies will result in Friday School from 2:15-3:15 in the cafete-ria. There will be no exceptions. Please make sure you are on time for each of your clas-

ses each day.

WHAT IS TARDINESS?

Anne Arundel County Public Schools defines tardiness as “the student not being in the classroom when the class period starts”.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING ON TIME TO SCHOOL?

The student begins the day in a positive frame of mind so that he or she can make the most of learning.

Allows the student to hear morning announcements so important information is not missed.

Promotes good attendance

Creates an understanding that school is important and that education is valuable.

Helps the student develop a sense of responsibility toward his or herself and toward others.

Leads to greater self confidence

Sets positive patterns for the future

IMPACT OF ARRIVING LATE TO SCHOOL

Student’s day is off to a negative start.

Student misses important information presented at start of school day.

Behavior is noticed by other students, which may illicit negative comments.

May lead to a loss of self confidence.

Disrupts classmates and teachers.

Creates negative habits that will be difficult to break.

May lead to poor attendance – if a student thinks it is acceptable to arrive late to school, he or she may think it is acceptable not to go at all.

ARRIVING ON TIME TO SCHOOL SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTS

Prepare items such as lunches, clothes, and backpacks the night before each school day.

Make sure your child is not prevented from sleeping due to distractions such as television, computer, video games, and/or telephone use.

Get yourself and your student up early in the morning so that you can leave the house in time to arrive to school before the bell rings.

Purchase an alarm clock for your child so he/she can get in the habit of getting up at the same time each day.

Make alternative arrangements with neighbors, friends, or family if there is difficulty getting your child to school.

Students should complete homework the night before the school day, not at the breakfast table!

Attention all Gopher Sports Fans:

The Gopher spectators' behavior has always been among Anne Arundel County's best, and the Athletic Department expects the behavior of the Gopher Fans to strive to exemplify the BEST in Anne Arundel County.
