Glenaeon Parent Education – 2019 Term 1 Program2

This booklet contains the schedule of Parent Education talks for Term 1 of the 2019 school year. There are a number of different events — some will help deepen your understanding of Steiner education, some will support you in working with your child at home, and some may even teach you a new skill. Our aim is to provide a program that caters to the needs and interests of parents at each stage of their Glenaeon journey, from early childhood right through to parenting teenagers.

The program is set out chronologically so that you can mark your calendar now for those events that you don’t want to miss. The program contains a mix of weekday morning talks, evening lectures and weekend workshops, and they are held at either the Castlecrag or Middle Cove campuses. Please check the weekly Newsletter and/or campus noticeboards for confirmation of dates, times and venues, as well as new events that may be added to the program through the term.

Events are free of charge and are open to people outside the school community. All bookings and enquiries to Castlecrag office P: 9958 0774 or E: [email protected]

We welcome your input for future programs and are always looking for suggestions and initiatives. Please email [email protected] with your comments and feedback.

It is said that it takes a whole village to educate a child. We could stretch the meaning to say it takes a whole school to educate a family. Just as our teachers work to make each class a “learning community”, so we strive to make Glenaeon a learning community for parents and friends of the school as well.

Welcome to Parent Education

Our patterns of thinking, our feelings and our will impulses are directly influenced by the community in which we grow. The foundations of both inner freedom and unfreedom are laid down through the course of childhood. With the rise of technology permeating extensively our outer lives, we are now being faced with its effects on our inner lives and its artificial influence over the development of thinking, feeling and will impulses. Technology is forming our community’s future and in doing so extending its persuasive influence into the inner capacities of its members.

We can choose to be ready as individuals, and as a collective community, with capacities—with the necessary inner strengths—to freely choose the way of life we determine to be supportive of the progression of humanity. We need to establish communities that are dedicated to human freedom; communities in which community health, child education, and social life are imbued with impulses supportive of the cultivation of individual freedom.

(Meaghan and Séamus are artists, teachers and alumni Steiner students from the USA).

The Arts have formed the creative backbone of the Steiner Education curriculum from its inception 100 years ago this year. How does artistic education promote healthy holistic development, and human-centred, age-appropriate learning during the school years in our contemporary world?

Welcome to this opportunity to engage with creative imagination and inspiration though participating in this ‘class’ of enlivened speech, drama, story, music, song with artists and teachers, Meaghan and Séamus, as they bring learning to life in spirited, soulful, practical ways. Imagine your children here…

When you meet your children with insight and compassion, when you accept that their troubled behaviours are ‘cries for help’ which need attending to, when you truly meet their individual and developmental needs, you are creating the foundation for mutually respectful relationships. This is a complex task because children’s needs are constantly changing according to their age and circumstances— for example, what environment most nurtures healthy growth, what approaches to parental authority are appropriate, and what responses to challenging behaviours are most helpful as they grow older. There is no one rule that fits all. This talk looks at some helpful approaches based on research into child development and behaviours at different stages of childhood.

“ With too much stuff, too many choices and too little time children can become anxious, have trouble with friends and school, or even diagnosed with behavioural problems”

Kim John Payne, author of “Simplicity Parenting”

In this three-hour workshop we will look at how to declutter our family lives. You choose what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of and this way we will create our homes as places of rest and rejuvenation, ‘sanctuaries’ from a fast paced world that is overwhelming adults and robbing children of their childhood. We become the architects of our family life as we realign with our own values and choose what is workable for our families and so create an ideal environment for the slow emergence of our children’s identities, resilience and wellbeing.

Mary Heard trained as a Simplicity Parenting coach in 2015 and has been helping families simplify their lives and create time for connection since that time through workshops, talks and her weekly column in the school newsletter

For more information, go to: maryheard.com.au simplicityparenting.com

We will explore the four pillars of Simplicity:

• ENVIRONMENT Creating a calm environment that fosters deep and creative play.

• RHYTHM Creating predictability and security in our children’s lives

• SCHEDULING Including open ended periods of downtime in our children’s weeks

• FILTERING OUT THE ADULT WORLD Saying ‘no’ to the pressures and anxieties of adult life that are pouring into our children’s awareness before they are ready.

These four pillars will serve as a road map for you to navigate your own way to what is sustainable for your own family.

WORKSHOPS

How can we support our children, families, community and self through anthroposophic home care as we journey through the changes of the seasons, the spiritual year, developmental and pedagogical stages of growth and biographical and life transitions?

Together, we work with practical, everyday life and applications, rhythm that arises from and in our daily life which care for and support the development of the senses and our learning.

Through anthroposophic home care and the care mantles of face cloths, footbaths, sphagnum, oil cloths and compresses, Lyn Clifton guides the supporting of children and parents in their health, learning and development. Nourishment through herbal teas, food, rhythm in daily life, warmth, and care for the senses, enable reflection and community strengthening.

Supporting children’s transitionsWith Lyn Clifton

Supporting children’s transition into Class 1 and 2As children pass over the rainbow bridge from Kindergarten to Class 1 and 2, a new door is opened, and sometimes as parents we can be quite surprised with the new child with whom we find ourselves living. Why is it that my once confident and active Kindergarten child seems to lose their confidence, becoming clingy, start complaining of loud noises, and tummy aches, asking to have days at home? During this session we will build pictures of the Class 1 and 2 child, look at ways to support them in this transition and take home some practical supports.
