She is much loved and gives of herself every day as she ensures breakfast is on time, with the right menu and with a pinch of “gratitude” to serve all of us! If you have ever had biscuits and gravy, you know you have been touched by the Angel of the Kitchen – Bonnie Smith! Please give her a hardy congratulations for being our Team Member of the Month for June 2014! Happy Birthday! News from Charlotte Dear Folks, I will be forever humbled by the portrait tribute presented to me last week by the Glenbrooke Residents’ Council. Words cannot express how much this means to me; and from the bottom of my heart, I thank each and every one of you for your thoughtfulness and kindness! You mean the world to me, and I treasure all the moments I have with “my” resident family! I have always said from the beginning that we have the best residents this side of the moon, and I will continue to speak that word of truth forever! It seems impossible to be talking about HURRICANES yet again, but with the month of June comes our preparation for the season! We have been so fortunate that we have not had to deal with really bad weather over the past several years but we cannot become complacent about what could happen on our precious Space Coast! You will be getting our Hurricane Preparation List the first of the month; so please review and make your plans for medications, food, water and safety! We will discuss this further as we go into the season! Again, please know how much I appreciate your kindnesses and how much I treasure my residents! Hugs and Kisses, Charlotte Resident of the Month This resident has worked behind the scenes for several years, helping out wherever there was a need. It could be in dining services, activities, church, decorating or you name it; and she is ready and willing to help! Many of you have had the opportunity to meet with her one-on-one as she is the Welcome Home Ambassador for the Residents’ Council. She meets with as many new residents within the first 2 – 3 weeks of their move in to make them feel welcomed and to answer any questions or concerns that arise. Please give a big hug to Sophie Ruccione, our June 2014 Resident of the Month! Did You Know? June 14 is National Flag Day. This day was adopted on June 14, 1777, with the original 13 star version. The flag of the United States is one of the nation’s most widely recognized symbols. The flag has become a powerful symbol of Americanism and is proudly flown on many occasions. The flag may have the use of fringe, but there are no implications of symbolism in the use of fringe. Traditionally, the Army and Air Force use a fringed National Color for parade, color guard, and indoor display. The Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard use a fringeless National Color for all uses. The flag is customarily flown all year-round and lighted at night. Widespread private use is on civic holidays like Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Presidents’ Day, Flag Day, and on Independence Day. On Memorial Day, it is common to place small flags by war memorials and next to the graves of U.S. war veterans. On Memorial Day, it is common to fly the flag at half- staff, from 8:00 a.m. until noon, in remembrance of those who lost their lives fighting in U.S. wars. There is a United States Flag Code, which outlines certain guidelines for use, display and disposal of the flag. Other types of desecration of the flag are considered a public outrage but remain protected as freedom of speech. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin planted the United States flag on the surface of the moon during the Apollo 11 mission. A similar flag was planted on each of the five subsequent successful Moon landing missions. At Glenbrooke, we honor our flag by flying it proudly.
