GLENCORE COMMUNITY PROGRAM

NORTH QUEENSLAND

The Glencore Community Program North Queensland has supported several social infrastructure initiatives since 2005, including the development of the Mount Isa Family Fun Park, Townsville’s Ronald McDonald House and the Cloncurry Community Precinct. These social infrastructure initiatives provide long-lasting and tangible benefits to the north Queensland communities in which we live and work.

Letter from our Chief Operating OfficersIn 2014 the Glencore Community Program North Queensland (GCPNQ) entered its tenth year of working in partnership with community organisations to address the areas of greatest need in the Queensland communities where our employees live and work.

The program demonstrates our commitment to Queensland and our belief that communities should benefit from our operations, both in the short and long term.

Since its establishment in 2005 our partnership programs have invested almost $28 million in the north Queensland communities of Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Camooweal, Townsville and Bowen and more broadly throughout Queensland, forming partnerships with charities, schools, community groups and government departments to help make a difference to people across our region.

In 2014 we’re proud to announce over $1.2 million will be invested into eleven community partners who have been chosen for their projects that will improve vital services and facilities in our north Queensland communities.

Our partnerships are supporting six key areas:

Social and Community Development – to develop community capacity and to address social disadvantage including poverty and homelessness

Education – to break the generational cycle of educational disadvantage

Health – to support the delivery of essential health and community services

Environment – to support programs focused on the protection of environmental values

Enterprise and Job Creation – to generate jobs and provide skills for disadvantaged people

Arts and Culture – to support the development of local arts and cultural programs including the protection of Indigenous languages and culture.

We’re confident these programs are making a real difference and look forward to seeing the success of our 2014 partners.

“Living over 900 kilometres away from the closest neonatal intensive care unit in Queensland, new parents Dan and Marie Horskins from Mount Isa were faced with the challenge of delivering their newborn baby in Mount Isa at only 29 weeks. Following the birth of their baby boy who weighed only 1.55 kilograms, the Townsville Ronald McDonald House provided them a home away from home for over two months and was Marie’s support system as baby Sonny grew stronger and stronger each day. Family Wing Crisis Accommodation“Ninety-eight per cent of families who stay with us come from regional areas of north Queensland, and we receive daily feedback from our families that Ronald McDonald House provides them with a home away from home and a friendly and caring environment that supports the entire family unit.” – Paul Rissman, Ronald McDonald House North Queensland Chairman.

The Ronald McDonald House Charity is an independent, non-profit organisation, that helps seriously ill children and their families when they need it most, by providing emergency accommodation close by the Hospital.

Glencore contributed $1 million to the Ronald McDonald House Charity in Townsville to help construct a new 12 bedroom accommodation wing at Townsville’s Ronald McDonald House, to provide emergency accommodation for parents and families who have seriously ill children staying in The Townsville Hospital.

The $3 million new accommodation wing was completed in late 2012, doubling the capacity of the Townsville Ronald McDonald House, making the service available to more people from rural and regional north Queensland while their children stay in The Townsville Hospital.

Paul Rissman, Ronald McDonald House North Queensland Chairman, said due to growing demand for their services, the original 12 room accommodation complex was always filled to capacity with families who required this critical accommodation.

“Through our partnership with Glencore we have doubled the capacity of the House and we can now accommodate more north Queensland families in need,” Paul says.

Living in north west Queensland can often mean that specialist care is a long way from home, and without access to the House, a large number of families would need to go to great expense to be with their children while they undergo specialist treatment at The Townsville Hospital.

One of those families was Marie and Dan Horskins of Mount Isa whose lives were turned upside down by the unexpected premature birth of their baby Sonny.

Following the birth of their baby boy who only weighed 1.55 kilograms the uncertainty surrounding both Marie and her newborn’s health was an insurmountable challenge to deal with, however the stress of what was to come was in some way relieved by the safe haven of the Ronald McDonald House and their friendly staff who feel like family to Marie and Dan.

“Living so close to the hospital, I was able to see Sonny as much as I wanted, and speak with others in similar situations. It helped me feel less alone with Dan at work 900 kilometres away. Everything you could think of was taken care of by the friendly staff and volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House from getting baby supplies to eating a healthy meal, the team were truly amazing,” Marie says.

Over 2,000 families have used the accommodation facility since it opened, many of them from Mount Isa, Cloncurry and surrounding communities, and some of them were Glencore employees and their families.

Cloncurry Community PrecinctWe were proud to provide $2.75 million towards the Cloncurry Community Precinct, partnering with Cloncurry Shire Council, the Queensland Government and the Australian Federal Government to deliver this important infrastructure project for Cloncurry.

The $8 million Precinct lies in the heart of Cloncurry’s business district and incorporates the Ernest Henry Mining Function Rooms, Bob McDonald Library, Dr David Harvey-Sutton Gallery and the refurbished Cloncurry Shire Hall, all centred on Community Open Space.

This modern facility has improved existing infrastructure, which was unable to provide sufficient space and services for the town’s diverse needs, whilst preserving a rich part of the community’s history.

Andrew Daniels, Mayor of Cloncurry Shire, says the Precinct has helped to make Cloncurry a more attractive place to live and be.

“With this premier facility we can not only provide top class venues and recreational and learning facilities for our community but attract new business and services to our town,” Mayor Daniels says.

Since opening in August 2012, the Precinct has hosted several major events including two balls, conferences and art shows, as well as a continuous stream of smaller community gatherings.

In 2013, the building was awarded State Winner in the Queensland Excellence in Construction Awards for Sporting and Community Facilities $5 million – $20 million category and was a finalist in the Regional Achievement and Community Awards for Energy and Sustainability.

The facility will no doubt remain a vital part of the Cloncurry community for future generations to enjoy.

THE SALVATION ARMY AUSTRALIA EASTERN TERRITORY

The Salvation Army Mount Isa Recovery Services Centre

The Salvation Army is one of the world’s largest providers of social aid and focuses on a wide range of social support services.

Our partnership with the Salvation Army will fund capital improvements to the Salvation Army Mount Isa Recovery Services Centre, formerly known as KASH, the Kalkadoon Aboriginal Sobriety House.

The centre provides residential treatment recovery from addiction services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

The funding will assist with capital improvements of the facilities including water collection, storage and reticulation system, solar power and evaporative cooling systems.

MOUNT ISA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

City Development Officer

The Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce is a proactive force involved in employment issues, regional and economic development, government relations, tourism and events management in Mount Isa.

The GCPNQ has partnered with the Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce and the Mount Isa City Council to finance a City Development Officer position.

The role is to position Mount Isa as a premier destination to work, live, visit, holiday and to host events including business, sporting and networking conferences.

ROMAN CATHOLIC TRUST CORPORATION FOR THE DIOCESE OF TOWNSVILLE

Jangawala Drop-in Centre kitchen renovation

The Roman Catholic Trust Corporation for the Diocese of Townsville is The Catholic Diocese which covers the north west Queensland region encompassing Mount Isa’s Good Shepherd Parish and its Jangawala homeless kitchen.

Our partnership with the Roman Catholic Trust Corporation will assist to upgrade the Jangawala Drop-in Centre kitchen which provides 250 meals per week for Mount Isa’s homeless and itinerant people. The kitchen provides a daily nutritious meal at the Jangawala Drop-in Centre and food parcels are also available through Emergency Relief.

Renovations include a new kitchen, a new extended pantry, serving counter, and to construct an external shaded and eating area.

MOUNT ISA PCYC

PCYC refurbishment project

Mount Isa PCYC has been established over 30 years and provides fun, safe and healthy sport and recreation, offering a variety of affordable activities and programs suitable for all ages.

The GCPNQ has partnered with the Mount Isa PCYC to assist with it’s refurbishment to enable the continuous delivery of quality targeted and affordable programming for the Mount Isa community. Funding assists to refurbish the bathrooms, kitchen, guttering, flooring, installation of a community notice board and new gym equipment.

MOUNT ISA CITY COUNCIL

the Mount Isa City Council to extend the heating process for the leisure pool for toddlers and young children.

This enables the facility to remain open year round, meaning greater access for toddlers and young children to learn to swim and participate in other lifestyle activities, helping to increase the liveability of Mount Isa.

CLONCURRY STATE SCHOOL

Shade for Primary classes and Seniors’ Retreat

Cloncurry State School is a co-educational state school with approximately 320 students from Prep to Year 12. Our partnership with Cloncurry State School will provide a pergola in the Prep play area, shade outside Primary classrooms and a Seniors’ Retreat outside the Year 11 and 12 classrooms.

With the extreme temperatures in North West Queensland, sun protection is a priority for the school. Additional shade will encourage students to be more active and spend time outside, while reducing the risk of sun and heat-related illnesses.

ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Science Laboratory fit-out

St Joseph’s Catholic School is a catholic co-educational school with more than 200 students from Prep to Year 9.

The school expanded to secondary education in 2014, offering a second option for Cloncurry students entering Year 8 and 9.

Our partnership with the school will fund the installation of furniture, equipment and air conditioning for the Science Room and Laboratory in the Junior Secondary Building.

The introduction of an additional, quality education option is expected to increase the retention and attraction rates of families to the Cloncurry community.

CLONCURRY PCYC

Youth and Community Engagement Coordinator

Cloncurry PCYC is committed to youth development and improving the lifestyle of the local community through sport and recreational activities.

Our three year partnership will enable Cloncurry PCYC to employ a Youth and Community Engagement Coordinator who will develop a long term Crime Prevention Strategy for Cloncurry and surrounding communities, including Dajarra, McKinlay, Normanton and Karumba.

The Coordinator will develop a holistic approach to crime prevention and will implement programs such as Drum Beat, Team UP and other recognised PCYC Youth Leadership programs.

Working directly with local youth, the programs will target the causes of youth crime, including boredom, lack of supervision and lack of engagement activities.

Sport for Life program“My son is young but loved all aspects of the program. He was excited and keen to attend every day. Having structured programs that cost the lower socio-economic families in our community nothing are amazing. Being geographically isolated makes these programs even more invaluable to us.” – Heidi Rix, Parent

Stride Foundation is a non-profit, non-government organisation dedicated to helping improve the physical, mental and social well-being of young people and their communities.

Stride works with young people in communities across Australia who may be disadvantaged through poverty, suffering, distress and helplessness.

Through the GCPNQ, we have partnered with the Stride Foundation to deliver the Sport for Life program in Mount Isa since 2011. The program is aimed at young people aged 14–18 years and uses high profile sporting role models to deliver health education and life skills workshops to young people living in remote communities.

Sport for Life workshops were held each term with students from Sunset Primary School, Healy State School, Central State School and Townview Primary School attending hip hop, soccer, basketball, ball skills and yoga workshops throughout 2013.

The hip hop workshops, delivered with the Indigenous Hip Hop Project (IHHP), were led by local resident and recent IHHP recruit, Jericho Young. Jericho’s involvement was well received by students who were excited to recognise a local as their mentor.

Lauren Colthorpe (Australian Matildas), Rachel Flanagan (Australian Opals) and Sophie Smith (Olympic Bronze Medallist – Water Polo) led the soccer, basketball and ball skills workshops, respectively, as well as “Healthy Habits” and “How Feelings Effect Behaviour” interactive activities, reinforcing the importance of leading healthy lifestyles and introducing simple and manageable habits for students to enjoy.

In 2013 we also expanded our partnership to deliver Stride’s On the Ball program in Cloncurry and Mount Isa. On the Ball incorporates basketball and Australian Football League workshops delivered during school holidays, encouraging young people from 6–15 years to participate in sporting activities

and be inspired through engagement with role models from the Australian Institute of Sport.

Working with Cloncurry PCYC to deliver On the Ball in Cloncurry, more than 40 youth attended the first program during the April school holidays. This number grew to 51 for the December workshops, demonstrating the successful introduction of Stride Foundation and their programs to the community.

Due to its success, we will continue to support the Sport for Life program in Cloncurry and Mount Isa in 2014 with an additional $85,000, taking our total funding contribution over four years to $375,000.

PERC TUCKER REGIONAL GALLERY

The Perc Tucker Regional Gallery initiatives

Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is Townsville’s premier regional art gallery, offering a dynamic range of local, national and international exhibitions complemented by workshops, talks and a host of other programs.

2014 sees the continuation of Glencore’s successful partnership with the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery to fund the Percival Portrait Award 2014, Strand Ephemera 2015; Children’s Exhibition 2014 and 2015, and the development of the National Touring Program 2014 and 2015.

BOWEN COMMUNITY COUNCIL

The Shed Shop

The Bowen Community Council is a not for profit organisation staffed by volunteers. The Bowen Community Council will use the funds to construct a shed to be used to sell second hand furniture and household goods. Funds generated from the goods will then fund ongoing projects such as the soup kitchen.

CLONCURRY PCYC

Curry Men’s Shed

In 2013, we partnered with Cloncurry PCYC to establish the Curry Men’s Shed, Cloncurry’s version of the Australia-wide Men’s Shed initiative.

The Curry Men’s Shed aims to advance the health and well-being of local men of all ages by providing opportunities to come together to work on projects, share skills and provide support to other members.

The official opening of the Shed in 2013 attracted almost 150 community members and since then the committee has hosted a variety of projects including a mental health workshop, building Santa’s sleigh for the Cloncurry Christmas Festival and hosting regular open days for residents to use the facilities for individual projects.

ACT FOR KIDS

Learn to be Safe with Emmy

Act for Kids is a charity working tirelessly to provide free services to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect.

The GCPNQ partnered with Act of Kids for the Learn to be Safe with Emmy program which is a

protective behaviours program delivered to grade one students in a classroom setting for one hour each week, for five weeks.

The focus of the program is to reduce the risk and consequences of harm for children by providing them with the skills to speak up if they experience harm or feel unsafe.

Using early learning principals, Learn to be Safe with Emmy helps kids to identify their feelings in situations where they feel safe and unsafe, and most importantly, what to do if they feel unsafe or find themselves in unsafe situations.

BOOKS IN HOMES

Empowering children through reading

Books in Homes Australia is a registered not-for-profit charitable organisation that helps underprivileged children improve their literacy skills and develop and maintain a love for reading.

The GCPNQ partnered with Books in Homes to provide books to students across ten schools within the north Queensland communities of Bowen, Cloncurry, Mount Isa, Camooweal and Townsville.

Through the program every student at these schools receives nine books a year, over two years, to take home and start building their own home libraries, increasing their exposure to quality reading material and fostering a greater love of reading that will hopefully last for a lifetime.

Students choose books from a Preview Pack of 48 books which is donated to each school library each term.

Due to the success of this partnership, and demand from students, families and teachers alike, this partnership will continue until 2014.

SOUTHERN GULF CATCHMENTS

Environment and Community Project Officer

Southern Gulf Catchments is a community-based organisation responsible for strategic and sustainable natural resource management, planning and implementation in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria region of north west Queensland.

Southern Gulf Catchments facilitates a range of environmental management, conservation and biodiversity programs. The organisation assists north west Queensland and Gulf communities in facilitating natural resource management activities ranging from weed control, riparian protection, biodiversity conservation and improved grazing management to fire management and coastal preservation.

Our partnership with Southern Gulf Catchments formed in 2011 is delivering the Sustainable Schools and Community program to drive environmental projects in schools and community groups within north west Queensland.

These projects will boost the capacity of participating groups by enabling them to undertake a wide variety of natural resource management projects.

HERMIT PARK STATE SCHOOL

The Arid Garden and Flushed Away Project

Our partnership with the Hermit Park State School in Townsville is delivering The Arid Garden and Flushed Away Project which is helping the school with water conservation by delivering bore water for use in gardens and ablution blocks at the school.

The project is a continuation of the Windmill Project undertaken by the school in 2010. The project focuses on Australian heritage and the conversation of water, one of our most precious resources. Arid landscaping around the windmill will incorporate rocks, sand, boulders, anthills, a dry water course and drought tolerant plants.

TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Children’s Retreat

The Children’s Ward at The Townsville Hospital looks after patients up to 16 years of age from across North Queensland including Townsville, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Camooweal and Bowen.

Our partnership with The Townsville Hospital Foundation created an outdoor retreat for older patients in the Children’s Ward of The Townsville

Hospital, providing a cohesive outdoor space catering for all needs and all weather conditions.

A welcome addition to the Children’s Ward, the retreat will significantly improve the hospital experience for young patients and their families.

This initiative benefits many patients from Townsville, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Camooweal and Bowen who stay in The Townsville Hospital for specialist treatment.

MOUNT ISA CITY COUNCIL

Pool heating project

Our partnership with the Mount Isa City Council enabled the installation of a heating system for the city’s 50 metre pool allowing it to remain open throughout the year.

The GCPNQ funding was used to install heat pumps, solar panels and pool covers for the Splashez Aquatic Centre’s 50 metre pool.

This enables the facility to remain open year round, meaning greater access to the learn-to-swim classes, squad and masters swimming, tri-squad, aqua aerobics and rehabilitation exercise classes and and other lifestyle activities, helping to increase the liveability of Mount Isa.

MOUNT ISA BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

Basketball court upgrade

The Mount Isa Basketball Association uses the Mount Isa Multi-Sport and Recreation Centre for netball, volleyball, badminton and futsal fixtures.

The GCPNQ partnership with the Mount Isa Basketball Association supported the upgrade of Mount Isa’s indoor basketball stadium.

The funding allowed the main court to be resurfaced, bringing it in line with national current sporting regulation codes and facilitating the creation of a multi-purpose indoor sporting arena capable of hosting netball, volleyball, badminton and futsal competitions.

NORTH WEST HOSPITAL AND HEALTH SERVICE

Suicide Prevention Project

The North West Hospital and Health Service covers an area of over 300,000 square kilometres and strives for excellence in the delivery of rural and remote health care for communities in north west Queensland.

Our partnership with the North West Hospital and Health Service is delivering the coordination of a suicide awareness program.

This project’s objective is to coordinate suicide awareness programs for our North Queensland employees to assist our people to identify and better deal with potential mental health issues within the workplace.

QUEENSLAND RESOURCES COUNCIL

QRC MITEZ Study

The Queensland Resources Council is a not-for-profit peak industry association representing the commercial developers of Queensland’s minerals and energy resources.

Our partnership with the Queensland Resources Council sees the formulation of the North West Queensland Regional Development Strategy Study to identify economic development options and opportunities to encourage investment across seven industry sectors in north west Queensland.

The group is working to develop an Economic Development Options and Opportunities Brief.

ACADEMY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING

Wonder of Science Program

The Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering is an independent non-government organisation dedicated to the promotion in Australia of scientific and engineering knowledge to practical purposes.

In 2012, 2013 and 2014 we partnered with the Academy of Science and Technology Engineering for the Wonder of Science program. The Wonder of Science program inspires a love of science in primary school children with the aim of addressing long-term skills shortages for science and engineering-based professions by engaging students in science projects.

MOUNT ISA FISH STOCKING GROUP

Hatchery Project

The Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group has been carrying out fish breeding and fish stocking programs in the impoundments of the Mount Isa region since 1987.

Conserving Water with the Arid Garden and Flushed Away Project

Through our partnership the Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group is facilitating the construction of a fish hatchery located at Outback at Isa.

Once established the hatchery will be self-sustaining and capable of producing enough fingerlings to support fish stocks and provide a stable income stream for continued investment in local fishing and aquaculture activities.

The hatchery will provide numerous benefits to the Mount Isa community including an additional tourism venture, and investment in industry diversification for the community.

NORTH QUEENSLAND HELICOPTER RESCUE SERVICE

Provision of an emergency helicopter

The North Queensland (NQ) Helicopter Rescue Service is a not for profit charity established in Mount Isa in early 2007.

Our partnership with the NQ Helicopter Rescue Service aims to improve the provision of emergency helicopter and aero medical response services to our north west Queensland communities.

The NQ Helicopter Rescue Service has worked continuously over recent years to provide emergency retrieval capability, particularly within our remote north west Queensland communities.

The service works closely with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Queensland Health, two of Glencore’s existing major partners in health delivery to the community.

MOUNT ISA DISTRICT INSTRUMENTAL GROUP

Mount Isa Instrumental Music Program

The Mount Isa Instrumental Music Program allows students to undertake tuition in strings, woodwind, brass and percussion.

Glencore forged a partnership with the Mount Isa Concert Band and String Orchestra in 2007 and we extended the partnership in 2012 to enable the purchase of musical instruments and associated equipment to ensure that students of Mount Isa, Cloncurry and School of the Air have access to equipment of a similar standard to those in coastal areas.

WESLEY MEDICAL INSTITUTE

Research into Retiring Workers and Injured Worker Recovery

The Wesley Research Institute aims to make an immediate and lasting difference to health care practices through medical research.

Our funding throughout 2012, 2013 and 2014 has enabled important research to be conducted focussing on improving the health and wellbeing of the mining workforce and regional mining communities. The first phase of the research identified the leading health risk factors of the Mount Isa Mines and Ernest Henry Mining workforce.

The research has identified areas for health management strategies and preferred health promotion strategies. Additionally, research is being conducted to assist injured worker recovery and retiring workers health management plans.
