How does one measure a glassful of personality? The Oxford Dictionary defines it as the combination of characters or qualities that form an individual’s distinctive style. Can that individual then transfer those characters into a bottle? We think so; after all, it is the likes of passion, dedication, fearlessness, eccentricity and even a well-tuned sense of humour that can dictate the approach one takes while trying to harness the various forces, natural and otherwise, at work when turning out a bottle of wine.

Thus, we have focused our gaze on twelve producers who we believe embody the often elusive qualities referred to above. Each of them displays an approach that inspires and delights, and more importantly, all have managed somehow to instil their larger-than-life characters within their creations, in the process forging a charismatic quality that makes these wines pop their heads up above the rest and draw you in.

We selected a dozen because that number conveniently fits within a case that you can throw under your arm and take home. However, any one of these twelve wines will solo impeccably as they shine a light on your day. Needless to say, all of them meet our exact-ing standards when it comes to the skyscraping quality of the contents. We don’t do bad.

You’ll find them on the tasting tables in our stores over the month. Let us know what you think on facebook/glengarrywines (the QR code on this page will take you there).

For those in Auckland, we have a shiny new store about to open in the beating heart of Kingsland, right beside the Atomic; but more on that next month. If you’re in the area, pop in and say hello; we’ll probably smile and hand you a glass of personality-filled vino.

With theatrical blood running through her veins, Misha Wilkinson spent her formative years training to be a ballerina and side of stage watching her mum sing opera. Having done her time at the Sydney Opera House and Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House, she has now invested her larger than life personality in this Central Otago winery. There is equally voluminous praise for her wines, the highly regarded Decanter Maga-zine naming Misha’s Vineyard as one of New Zealand’s top twenty producers. Tradition holds its head high here. Whether it’s the legendary shotgun used to run off unwanted visitors from the cellar door (we’re not sure how you make a profit doing this) or the time we asked for a photo for our website and received a Polaroid in the mail, Eskdale has long been the strange but compelling story of one man and his winepress. Kim Salonius, fierce individualist and graduate in medieval history has a predilection for age-ing his wines himself before allowing them out the door. The abundance of character and style on display here aptly reflects the unrelentingly high standards of its delight-fully eccentric producer.

Winemaker James Healy and viticulturist Ivan Sutherland know their stuff, having both graduated from the Cloudy Bay School of Excellence before taking their own brand of wine wizardry out into the world. They’re sitting on some of the best vineyard sites in Marlborough and know just how to use ‘em, via the sort of dedicated focus that garnered Sutherland an Olympic rowing medal back in the 1970s. Their agenda is hand harvested low yields and high, high quality. A Burgundy- saturated evening with them can induce much frivolity and hysteria. We know. And this? Pungent, tropical, doggedly different, a Marlborough aficionado’s wet dream.

Talented, charismatic, highly respected; recipient of the Sir George Fistonich Medal for her outstanding contribution to the NZ wine industry; champion of sustainable winemaking; first woman to chair a national wine competition within Australia/NZ. You get the picture? Uber-achiever and Hawkes Bay heroine behind C.J. Pask, this is Kate’s own label, the one with her name clearly engraved across the front, her personality boldly ensconced within. Crafted to reflect Kate’s philosophy that wine can be all about accessibility and fun, pears and nectarines rule the roost, their rich fruit characters and distinctive charm sweeping all before them.

Mad? Or just way ahead of his time? Gewürz is seriously niche, and Nick Nobilo would have required a pretty major vision, right up there with the burning bush, to embark upon such a pilgrimage, producing just the one wine from his Gisborne domain. There’s something to be said, though, for such a singular approach: the ability of that amount of care and attention to result in a wine of exceptional quality. Replete with personality and a pretty hefty price tag, is it worth it? Most definitely. NZ’s top Gewürztraminer sits proudly astride the international stage; we’d confidently pay this for the Alsatian Grand Cru model, so why not our own?

Is this our greatest red wine? Many think it might be. Stephen White, Stonyridge owner and winemaker, has created an atmosphere of unrestrained joie de vivre within his Waiheke slice of Heaven, a notion originally conceived under a Tuscan olive tree with the sun beating down and a glass of wine in hand. What followed was some serious apprenticing in Bordeaux and a lot of hard work on Waiheke, the result a legendary New Zealand red. The Larose was one of our first premium wines to hit the international stage, a prestigious positioning Stephen has assiduously upheld to this day. Three things come through clearly: the wine’s impeccable quality, its superb definition of place and its maker’s relentless dedication to excellence.

Duncan Forsyth loves to put on scary suits and cowboy boots. We’ve tried to talk him out of it, but he stubbornly retains his grip, seemingly with the same dedication reserved for his beloved Riesling grape. Duncan is a purist, a winemaker fiercely dedicated to his task, driven by the conviction that the critical work is done within the vineyard. He knows his rugged, snow-kissed terroir intimately, champions the unsung Riesling variety at every opportunity and his expressions are some of our finest. If you want to find out why the Duncans of this world are so obsessed with the Big R, there really is no better place to start than this.

Direct and to the point; loves to stir things up; adores vintage champagne; qualified viticulturist and winemaker; consummate creator when it comes to either Pinot Noir or méthode traditionnelle: these are all apt descriptors of Austrian-born Rudi Bauer. In town recently hosting a winemaker’s dinner, he was most concerned that there had been no controversy over the night and so tried his best to start some. This is how the man rolls. Love him or not (and we’re reasonably sure that Central Otago is still divided), he is an indisputably clever winemaker. Rudi’s Pinot Noir is world class, his superb méthode champions brilliantly the true potential of our southernmost regions for sparkling wine.

Chris Gambitsis (a.k.a. Gambo) is endowed with enough laughter-dispensing charisma to accommodate at least three people. To spend an evening with him sampling his product is to step off the edge into a skewed world of real-time theatre, where you’re not so much engaged in a witty encounter as part of some gobsmacking performance. All this unbridled energy and exuberant flare had to go somewhere, and so has ended up neatly contained in a wine bottle and on our shelves. The Raptor comes off several sites in the Waihopi Valley, each parcel unique in itself, with the sum considerably more than its parts. Appropriately tropical and intense.

Does an A-list actor make A-list wines? In this case, yes. Sam Neill exudes the kind of quietly assured, debonair class an earlier generation found in Cary Grant et al. and one senses immediately that this enterprise means more to him than just finding some-thing to do during the Interval. What began merely as a mild urge to provide family and friends with a reasonably decent quaffer has evolved into an overriding need to create The World’s Best Pinot Noir. When Sam visits our stores, you can see the haze of fandom rising off some of our customers like the steam off a winter scrum in Dunedin. This is his entry-level Pinot, infused thoroughly with his individual brand of style and flair.

Daniel Le Brun is French. Is that enough? No; although it explains much, it won’t fill this column space, so we’ll continue. It is quite possible that Daniel Le Brun’s body runs on sparkling wine rather than blood; he was born in Épernay, throbbing heart of the Champagne region, to a family that has been making the stuff now for twelve generations. With that heritage firmly in his back pocket, it is unsurprising that the sole wine style Daniel produces is méthode traditionnelle. This, the first, is the mainstay of the range, 100% Chardonnay with the fresh, ripe fruit immersed in a divinely creamy toastiness.

Dick Frizzell is veering dangerously close to National Treasure status. He has always had a finger on the Kiwi cultural pulse, mining that rich vein for his artistic endeavours, so it is with some interest that we’ve observed his foray into the world of wine. Ex-Villa man Rod McDonald, something of an artist in his own field, takes care of the internal structural duties, so of course the vino is buono. The label is brilliantly exuberant, natch, and it’s worth grabbing a box just to get the box, in-scribed as it is with esoteric Frizzell phrases. The Chardy itself delivers a Bay-sponsored magic show, where peaches, nectarines and butterscotch parade their theatrical delights across the tongue’s stage.

ISABEL vInEyArd

Isabel Vineyard was established in 1982 by ex-airline pilot Michael Tiller and his wife Robyn. Boasting a job history where constant attention to detail and an ability to operate in a rarified atmosphere were key prerequisites to success, the Tillers were always going to do well at their chosen endeavour. Originally operating as contract growers supplying such high achievers as Cloudy Bay, the Isabels emphatically announced their own entry into the world of wine-making when their very first offering, a Pinot Noir, won gold.

The empire that is Isabel Vineyard is very much a family business involving Ma, Pa and all the kids: Brad is Isabel’s viticulturist and the driving force behind the development of sustainable management and organic certification; Jane is assistant to winemaker Carlos Orgiles; Caitlin looks after the marketing and Luke is the cellar hand, responsible for shipping the wines to destinations across the globe.

Having long expressed an interest in green practices, every aspect of Isabel’s operation is undertaken with scrupulous attention to detail, the vineyards increasingly managed on sustainable and organic principles to produce low yields of high quality fruit. A low intervention regime allows the expression of terroir to its fullest extent, with the wines all bottled in-house to preserve their integrity.

Isabel Vineyard’s lovingly crafted wines are, in the end, exemplary expressions of Marlborough’s might, and an indicator of where the future may lie for this highly significant region.

Not quite as capricious as its close relative, Ms P. Noir, Pinot Gris nonetheless requires careful management in the vineyard, a concept the fastid-ious Isabels are more than at home with. Elegant and fragrant, this spills its wonderfully aromatic nose of spice-nuanced white peach, ginger and rose petals across a lush and creamy palate of pears, stonefruit and green apple. Delish.

Ms Noir herself allures us with a bouquet of soft summer fruits given a nice earthy edge by the notes of nutmeg and mushroom. There is even a tinge of prosciutto to the proceedings, along with fine tannins and a grounding streak of minerality. Weighting up nicely, this is a good advertisement for Marlborough Pinot.

Lounging comfortably on the sofa that is Kate Radburnd’s winemaking philosophy is the notion that the essence of NZ wine is located in the pristine fruit characters derived from our unique climate and geography. She’s not wrong. True to form, then, this is intensely aromatic, with pure fruit flavours and a fresh vibrancy that nails at the first sip the unique characters that make Marlborough’s wines so distinctive and adored by the world.

The Torean wines invariably constitute maximum drinkability for minimum output, this one being no exception. Wrapped up warmly in its fragrant, mineral-tinged bouquet of stonefruit and spice, the palate is off-dry and dominated by bright Marlborough fruit flavours brought to a sparkling conclusion by a clean, fresh finish. Works a treat with Asian dishes, or even a bit of cheese.

Vibrantly fragrant aromas of strawberry and spice lead you by the nose to a seductively textured palate of creamy flavours. The pristine Pinot Noir fruit lends a delicate touch of earthiness to the proceedings that keeps things from becoming too cloying. Delightfully fresh, deliciously decadent, it calls out, ‘I’ll see you for summer on the deck, and don’t be late.’

Creators of the glorious Cristal, beloved bubbly of rappers and royalty alike, the Louis Roederer champagne house came into being in 1776, around the same time a nascent America was struggling to stand up in the cot. The serious timeline involved in that statement adds an unassailable aura of authenticity to the proceedings; let’s face it, any family that can hold a business together for almost two-and-a-half centuries has to have something going for it. With two-thirds of their grape requirements under company ownership, Roederer has a great deal of control when it comes to the quality of its product. Operating under the ethos, ‘the better the vine, the better the wine’ its vineyards are meticulously maintained and well-honed traditions adhered to. Roederer themselves pay homage to ‘those people in the vineyards and cellars who daily orchestrate the score for a great champagne.’ One of the truly great houses.

It’s all about balance here, with just the right amount of everything present. The beer is a light golden-yellow in the glass, and on the nose there is a slight hint of nuts backed up with light hop aromas. In the mouth, an infusion of malts and hops brings out cereal-tinged nuances and light, biscuity, malty characters, neatly signed off by a light, refreshing finish.

This being a thoroughly New Zealand tale, there’s an All Black involved, in the form of Terry McCashin, who, with wife Bev, created in 1980 what would become the country’s most successful independent microbrewery, McCashin’s. Their award-winning, naturally-brewed creations revolutionised the way beer was produced here, and in the process inspired a whole new generation of brewers. Today, under Dean McCashin, over three decades of pioneering prowess have come to fruition in their latest premium craft beers: The Stoke range is brewed from Nelson’s finest organic hops, premium malt, their own bespoke yeast, pure Palaeo water and no artificial additives.

With an abundance of new brewers now on the market, we’re delighted to tip our hat here to one of the longer-standing New Zealand craft breweries. Richard Emerson returned to NZ in 1992 with a newly acquired thirst for the brews he’d become accustomed to enjoying overseas. In the Land of No. 8 Wire, what else was a good Kiwi boy going to do but put his food science skills to good use and start experimenting. Today, Emerson’s are still based in Dunedin where they began; they’re just a little larger now with their nine full-timers plus add-ons, but still very much craft-oriented and turning out the smaller, more experimental brews. The hallmark of the Emerson’s range is intense flavours neatly married with evocative aromatics, all distinctively balanced and true to their ideals.

GREEk-STYLE ROAST LAMB WITH A TOMATO & BLACk OLIVE SAUCE AND HERBED POTATOES

Strawberry season looms again (a fruit with a special place in the Jakicevich family heart, having once upon a time farmed them). Yes, they’re superb on their own, but for a quick and simple dessert, hull the straw-berries, sprinkle Valdespino sherry vinegar over them and serve with mascarpone and a drizzle of Manuka honey.

TASTY TIP

LIZ WHEADON

Meredith Dairy’s most awarded cheese. Sealed in glass, softly-textured cubes of goats cheese are drenched in garlic-infused extra virgin olive oil and enlivened with spices and fresh herbs. Serve with roasted vegetables, salads, on crusty bread or with antipasto.

This is their sherry vinegar; it comes complete with its own protected Denominación de Origen and is superior, flavourwise, to standard wine vinegar. Makes a superb addition to all sorts of soups, stews, sauces, casseroles and dressings.

PALACIOS REMONDOLA MONTESA 2008

‘Drink as the locals do’ is surely a safe and sound bit of advice. This, then, has to be good; after all, over a quarter of all Asti sold in Italy is this very wine. At 7% it’s reassuringly low in alcohol and delivers up exactly what you’d expect: a burst of floral notes and a honeyed palate, frizzante and delicate enough for late afternoon autumn sun.

The Perrin family are well-respected producers in the Rhône, and this is a seriously decent CdR, the aromas of cherry, plum and spice diving deeply before resurfacing on the silky, richly textured palate. Dusty tannins and a tasty finish complete the ride.

Blackcurrant and violet aromas are supported by a hint of herb and minty notes. The palate is dominated by rich, savoury Coonawarra fruit flavours interwoven with subtle toasty oak and some gentle grainy tannins that’ll comfortably accommodate a little cellar time.

This much-lauded and awarded Pinot embellishes its alluring aromas with hints of chocolate, the elegantly poised palate displaying sumptuous textures and a lingering note of spice. Consistently great drinking.

Stablemate of Pomerol’s mighty Château Petrus, this classy Merlot-dominant Grand Cru wine displays the super ripe fruit and bold tannins that are the hallmark of the great 2009 vintage in Bordeaux. Superb.

Inheritor of the groundwork invested by Waiheke’s pioneering Goldwater family, this elegantly-styled Syrah shows ripe fruit flavours built around a core of dusty tannins and gently embraced by silky textures.

A Hawke’s Bay take on a classic Bordeaux varietal blend, this exudes cherry, berry and plum aromas and flavours accented by spice and vanillin oak, with the deft touch of Kate Radburnd most apparent.

Off-dry in style and hoisting its evocative aromas and flavours of pear, ginger and tropical fruits, the Stoneleigh PG is brightly poised, with a delightfully viscous mouthfeel and a long, flavoursome finish.

The stonefruit characters of this elegantly modern Chardonnay are nuanced by spice, toasty notes and a subtle touch of mineral. The lovely textural mouthfeel makes a perfect foil to the persistent fruit flavours.

A medium-weighted Chardonnay with complex fruit aromas and flavours subtly seasoned with oak. The palate is characterised by fresh citrus-influenced notes complemented by a creamy, biscuity texture.

Lifted aromas of plum and berry are supported by cinnamon and spicy oak. The palate is fruit-driven, ripe tasting, beautifully balanced and integrated, with supple tannins playing a complementary role.

Champion Pinot Gris at the Marlborough Wine Show, Ara’s beautifully aromatic first release of the variety boasts lush, spicy flavours subtly counterpointed by citrus and mineral notes. Spectacular first attempt.

Melon and nectarine aromas are backed by touches of gooseberry, herb and citrus. The palate is lively and nicely weighted, the lingering flavours enhanced by a dash of lime. Quintessentially Marlborough.
