Howard Lorton Gallery 90th year Celebration by Glenn Shull

The Howard Lorton Galleries in Denver is celebrating 90 years in the furniture business. The busi-ness occupies the old Marcus Motors Studebaker building on 12th and Broadway. The used car building that was right on the corner of 12th and Broadway has been replaced by a modern structure that is attached to the Marcus Motors Building.

In the planning of their celebration party, they thought it would be special if they had a 90 year old Studebaker on display. The party planner Christine contacted Christof Kheim of the Forney Muse-um and past president of the Conestoga Chapter to see if he could supply an appropriate vehicle. Chris-tof indicated that the only 1927 Studebaker in that he knew of and presently in the club was my 1927 Erskine. So, on October 7th from 4 to 8 p.m. the Erskine was displayed next to the front door of the Gal-lery. Christof brought a 1927 Cadillac that shared the “spotlight” on the other side of the red carpet. The Howard Lorton Gallery in the past occupied the old Rickenbaugh Cadillac building so the Forney Ca-dillac fit right in with the celebration.

We also had the privilege of a tour of the building. We were shown many of the architectural details and efforts to restore the building to it’s original glory. It was apparent that some of the previ-ous owners weren’t concerned about the preservation of this historic original building. Our tour includ-ing seeing the ramps that were used by the cars as they were moved from level to level. The original painted sign “STUDEBAKER SERVICE REPAIRS” that extends the entire length of the building is still visible on the back of the building. Mayor Hancock even declared October 7th, 2017 as “Howard Lorton Day”. Many thanks to the Cook family, owners, for the opportunity to be a part of their celebration. William (Bill) Cook is the grand son of Howard Lorton.

A crisp fall day for a drive to the home of Merv Mundorf for the annual swap meet/

potluck. The food was delicious and enjoyed by all. There were fourteen members pre-

sent, no new members or guests. The meeting was called to order by president, Dave B.

Activities and minutes of the September meeting were discussed and approved.

John Glusick gave a short report on the upcoming activities of CCCC, in relation to po-

litical action toward antique and classic cars in Colorado. Members next reviewed the

menu for the Christmas Luncheon. This will be on DECEMBER 16TH at The Old School

House, 26112 Nicholson Rd. at 12 noon. It is about 2 miles south of business Highway 50,

off of 27th Lane, Pueblo, Colorado. Hosts are the Paul and Mark Kock families. The

luncheon is being catered by Cicerelli's Park East Steak House. Decision was made by

members present and approved by same, that the Chapter will pay the cost of the meal

for each member attending. Members will be contacted soon to see if they plan on at-

tending. If you say you are planning to attend and do not do so, you will be asked to re-

imburse the chapter, unless you have a major problem in attending. Guests will pay for

their own meal. There will be a gift exchange. Please mark your gifts whether it is for

male or female. Cost should be $15 to $20.

New business: Dave Batchelor reminded everyone that nominations for 2018 officers

will be at the November meeting and election at the December meeting. A discussion

was held about the Studebaker National Museum car raffle. It was approved by mem-

bers to purchase tickets to support our museum.

After the meeting, members were invited to a tour of Merv's auto collection. We

would like to thank Merv for allowing the chapter to hold our meeting and potluck at his

home.

Almost Thanksgiving, and I hit Google again for some facts and trivia about the holiday.

Everyone thinks the first Thanksgiving happened when the Pilgrims and Indians all got

together to feast. It is true that by the fall of 1621, only half of the pilgrims, who had

sailed on the Mayflower survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive decided to do a

feast. The Wampanoag Indians had taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. The

Pilgrim leader, William Bradford invited the neighboring Indians to partake of the feast,

along with their chief, Massasoit. It wasn't until a fictional account appeared in the

book "Standish of Standish"(1889), that the Pilgrim's "First Thanksgiving" became asso-

ciated with the holiday. This idea did not become popular until after WWII. There are

only two accounts of the 1621 Thanksgiving. Edward Winslow wrote about it in a letter

dated December 12, 1621 and William Bradford wrote about it in his History of Plymouth

Plantation.

One last note on this. Most of you know I am into genealogy, and decided not only to

do mine, but also Jim's. I discovered that one of Jim's ancestors was at that thanksgiv-

ing feast. William Brewster is one of Jim's distant ancestors. Brewster is a well known

man of his time, and a stained glass window honors him in the Capitol. You never know

what you will find when you go searching for family, whether near or far (in the past).

Happy Thanksgiving and good wishes to everyone.

Wyoming Chapter President Message

Greetings my Studebaker friends. I can’t believe another year of Studebaker fun has come and gone. We

had a busy but fruitful year. Our membership grew and I look forward to meeting those new members.

We updated our bylaws to bring our Chapter into the 21st century. We had many fun outings and we

now even have a Facebook page. If anyone has any ideas for next year, lets hear it. Our next meeting is

our Christmas Party in March. It will be held on March 17th, St Patricks Day. Jim and Carol Harkins have

graciously volunteered to have the meeting at their home in Casper. It is also our meeting for election of

officers for 2018. Hope to see you all in March!
